Nice relaxing read. Very insightful and informative

beautiful illustrations, with language to match.

I found this book in the library and kept reading it so long I paid twice the cost of the book in fines. Now, I've ordered my own copy because I cannot be without it.Written in the style of Aldo Leopold's _Sand County Almanac_, this is a focused study of stream ecology, But it is not a dry book of science. It is a story of a stream through four seasons. The author writes of a place he knows well through a lifetime of hiking and fishing, but where he can still experience childlike wonder. Through his narrative, the reader learns about the fish, the water, plants and insects, birds and beasts, and the relationships that sustain the cycles of life and death along a stream. The author offers perspectives that develops a sense of ecological responsibility.

This is for people that truly value a book for its art. This is an almost magical work with scenes of trout, insects, and natural history. The illustrations in this book are some of the best I have ever seen. I was surprised to find the illustrator and writer are the same. A great book for your coffee table, library, or classroom. The only problem I have is that I did not find it sooner. ¸

I have a long time love of horror, and this story reminds me of the pages on pages of Ellery Queen’s Mystery Magazine and Alfred Hitchcock Presents anthologies I tore my way through, once upon a time.Though brevity makes the story short on details, it’s the kind of story that’s better for knowing less and letting the imagination run wild, creating horrors greater and more horrible via the unknown. It’s also fascinating to see how Charles incorporates real history into the fantastical, a foundation from which the sparkly fiction can rise.And then, as an adult who didn’t know what she was missing, I love the queering of my horror, the fortuitous meeting of these two very different gay couples, one just embarking on its great romance and the other possibly getting a second chance for one. I don’t know how likely it is she’ll write more about these characters, but as with pretty much everything Charles writes...I’d surely read more.

A change of pace from other KJ Charles I’ve read, way darker, but I still enjoyed it. I loved the incorporation of Sweeney Todd and all this dark-underbelly history going on. Not a lot of focus on the relationship between Arabella and Johanna, but their relationship is wonderfully incorporated into the storyline. I also found it amusing how their sexual relationship kept having the door closed; the way KJ wrote it was just such a nice humor added to such a dark story.

Appallingly short tale involving two lesbians and two gay men facing criminal corruption on a grand scale, a retelling of Sweeney Todd with meat lockers full of lost men and a Mengele type performing face transplant experiments on criminals. Well-told with terse descriptions, a deus ex machina or two, and the belated discovery that this is a Christmas novella made me laugh out loud. Definitely a “Nightmare Before Christmas” without Tim Burton. Very entertaining.

such a good book. Charles' books are always well-researched and I find myself looking up references. The Liberty was actually a place. The laughing illness is Kuru. I love that incidents and references are always something that is actually a part of history. The story is always good, and The Price of Meat doesn't fail her winning streak.

This was a great deal of nauseating fun. I wan't aware of the history of the Liberty of Alsatia but it makes a grim setting as our intrepid heroine Johanna gets entangled in a plot there as she tries to free her beloved from a madhouse. This works really well as a short story but I'd be happy to read more set in this world.

I love all things KJ Charles. This is a dark and suspenseful horror that still manages to have a simple sweet romance.

have to admit I love everything KJ Charles writes and this one was no different. I just wish there was more of it! this one was definitely darker... but it still had all the elements of her writing that you look fwd to. It was a tasty little treat that left me wanting a prequel so I could learn more about a certain pair's backstory...

This was purchased as a gift and the response was great. We were all cracking up and really enjoying the fun nature of the calendar. Although, the product does claim to be a calendar, and while it does have a small area on the bottom corner where the days and numbers are laid out, its not really functional as a daily calendar, no squares for filling, etc. Not sure anyone is buying this product for that reason, but it was my reason for 4 stars :)

I bought this for a white elephant gift and it was by far the most popular. It might seem a little expensive, though paper and printing are of very high quality material. Plus I love seeing some of the girls expressions when holding the carps, especially the one that didn't really want to and are grimacing... haha!

It's Girls....and Carp......pretty much everything you would want from a "girls..and Carp" Calendar. The Young ladies are lovely, the Carp are large, but look sort of confused. I;d subtract a star for the calendar part, which is tiny and hard to read.....but...it's a calendar..... with Girls.... and Carp...so.....

Bough as a gag gift for my brother. He got a good laugh from it, the quality of the calendar is actually good. The photos are well... what they are...

Catching a chubby carp to keep as a fun pet is all the rage now, I have one and I dress him up as a shark and let him ride around the house on my roomba (I should put that up on youtube...) Anyways, I used to be lonely due to my shyness, but since buying this amazing calendar, I've had so many womens find me irresistible, now I find myself with more girlfriends than I know what to do with, they usually come over to cuddle and pet my chubby carp (did not know how much of a chickmagnet carp were). I recommend getting this calendar, you might even have the great life I now enjoy: chubby carp chillin' on the roomba and hot dates that come over just to cuddle with my chubby carp which means I get all the nakked hugs I can handle. I would not have such a charmed life otherwise, It's great!!!

It is a book built on "reaction". Yes, the sweeping ideals of the book may have value in a world Sun projects, but what if you never had to go to war with the ruling classes? What if you never had to worry about your government selling you and yours down the river for profit?Wouldn't it be better to make sure things NEVER get as bad as they are in the book?Instead of preparing for martial law and government/police troops, doesn't it make more sense to be PROACTIVE? You know, find politicians on either side of the political line who honestly want to help the masses and not the rich, and then educate them as to the realities of goverment/corporate influence and corruption. Show them exactly how it plays out for those at the furthest end of society. Fill their head and offices with statistics and verifiable information to support your claims.If no politicians is sympathetic, then find someone who WILL run and educate them. MAKE the elections be ABOUT THE ISSUES, not about who looks/sounds better on Twitter/Facebook/Instagram. Have politicians SHOW their plans, in detail, before you believe their goals will honestly help the common person in this society. If a politician does not follow up on the goals set forth in their campaign, petition to have them removed from office as they have made a verbal breach of promise to those who voted FOR THEM.Make the government offices answer to the common person, just as they were always meant to. It is a government of the people, by the people, for the people. Stop waiting for a crisis to "show your true colors". Fix the problem NOW, before any of this overblown nonsense talked about in the book has a chance to take place.If your response to my comments are along the lines "Things are already horrible!", then you obviously have no desire to lift a finger to educate (not teaching pointless chants and catchy slogans) or empower yourself or any other human on this planet. You need to excuse yourself from any agenda because you have no desire to do what needs to be done for proper change and growth.Learn from both your own resources as well as those used by your enemies for if you do not understand why your enemies think/feel/say the things they do, you have no idea how to even begin properly opposing them, and you will have no clue where they will turn when opposed. Learn their lessons, and you'll be ahead of them.The best thing "The Dandelion Insurrection" attempts to teach is taking the time to learn that there are people under the uniforms, and even under the invectives/labels/insults you might like to dump on those who think differently than you. We are all humans, and we ALL deserve courtesy and respect, even if we don't like that person.

I read a blog post that suggested this book and the summary sounded interesting, so I purchased it. I loved the diversity of the characters who were all working towards a common goal. The idea that a group of people with strong ties to their French heritage were so pivotal in the fight for freedom was really neat. All of the characters had interesting backgrounds and used the talents they had to bring about change. A ray of hope in this world right now.

Jim is now living in another dimension, another zip code in the ethereal regions beyond, but he would have loved this book, as do I. I thought this was an amazing book, and in some ways joins some of the wonderful apocalyptic literature, some of it unfortunately written under the Young Adult branding. The truth is, as the father of my native land José Martí once said, that children are the hope of the world - "los niños son la esperanza del mundo." We are immersed in an era of distrust, greed, indifference to the plight of the many. This book shows the power of community, the power, as we said in the Occupy Movement, of the 99%. This is about solidarity, about love, and ultimately about revolution. Revolution comes from revolvere, to roll back, to move in a circular orbit... Our forefathers when they wrote the Declaration of Independence said "That whenever any Form of Government becomes destructive of these ends, it is the Right of the People to alter or to abolish it, and to institute new Government, laying its foundation on such principles and organizing its powers in such form, as to them shall seem most likely to effect their Safety and Happiness."We have our marching orders from our forefathers and mothers. Our planet is hanging in the balance. We honor and obey Mammon. Only love will save us.Buy this book. I bought ten copies directly from the author, to give away to people I thought should read it. I will buy twenty of her new book, because we need the inspiration to go forth and create a new world, with love at the forefront.Am I an idealist? You bet!

It is not a how-to book of parenting strategies but a philosophical guide for walking the parenting journey with mindfullness. I put down the book feeling like my mind just left a conscious parenting retreat, punctuated with moments of, “Ah, yes,” and feeling spiritually rejuvenated. I definitely recommend this book for parents in the advanced class.That said, I do have four significant points of contention.Lack of connectionI walked away from this reading experience feeling a definite sense of separateness as the ideal (in her opinion). But connection is the foundation of everything for humans. The author of this book sees the path to enlightenment as being a solitary one. I disagree – passionately.Devaluing of full time parenthoodThe author conveys a clear message that working away from your child gives them the greatest benefit and further diminishes full time parenthood by expounding the insignificance of direct involvement in your child’s daily life. I wholeheartedly disagree and attitudes like this contribute to a societal devaluing of mothering.Only child perspectiveSome of what she describes is not applicable for a family with multiple children. For example, she espouses a lot of alone time and silence. Having three little boys myself, they are always together and it is never silent.Traditional Public SchoolA lot of the book is told through the lens of a family with a child in traditional public school. So much so, that it is presented as the way of life, as opposed to a choice she has made.Despite these concerns, I still recommend the book for parents who seek to evolve.Review published at www.sageparenting.com.

I never write reviews, but in this case I have no choice. I have a PhD in clinical psychology, and I think this is one of the most important books ever written. EVER. Anyone who has a child, wants to have a child, is having a child, or WAS a child should read this. If Dr. Tsabary's message could get through to any of them, the world would be a better place.

I'm a Christian. I've read a ton of parenting books. I homeschool my kids, I live with them 24/7. I've tried a lot of different techniques and they all feel like a cop-out for the real reason behind the struggles. Like Dr Shefali says, "Stop the insanity!" This book has brought a different perspective to the whole scenario. Things are finally making sense. It all starts with me, the parent. The problem is not my kid. The problem is me! Please don't freak out!! You're probably thinking, "oh, yeah, here we go again. It's all my fault!" Yes and no! The good news is that there is a solution. I'm loving this book and I am reading her other one too, The Awakened Family. Don't give up on your kids. Buy this book today and start listening to Dr Shefali's teaching on YouTube.

Bought this for mom- may not have been the right move because she got offended, however, I started reading the book and it is very insightful (it's much easier for me to take in because I am not a parent). I also believe kids can better understand their parents and face issues they struggled with during childhood by reading this.

This book was good info in regards to being aware of your own presence and letting your kids be what they are however it seemed it was just repeating all the info throughout the book. At times the author makes you feel like if something is happening to your child or when they act up its your own fault. I continued to read it and got past that and then just felt like I was re-reading the same info. She basically does not want you to have any sort of expectations from your kid otherwise they are going to rebel in different ways.Worth the read for the info but don't feel bad about yourself because of the focus on yourself she puts.

Great, great book for anyone who is about to become a parent (like myself) or someone who already has kids. I haven't finished the book yet but I love that this is not a how-to book, it's a book that walk you through the conscious process and how many unconscious responses that we already have programmed in us.Definitely a very holistic/stoic approach to parenting but if you already have that mindset about life. this book will spark your imagination :)

Shefali dives in very early in her book and really show how we can be more effective parents. I realized that was parenting from my past and not learning who my children are and are becoming. Now, I listen to them, show more concern. I ask them questions like "why do you feel this way, or why did you answer like that."I see improvement in my children. I realize that every child is a small reflection of myself. Once I begin to do some deep searching within myself, I begin to understand them more and know how to better help them as they help me aslo...

This is, in all seriousness, the best parenting book I've ever read. It isn't about "how to fix" your kid(s), it's about how to fix YOU.

The author is an atheist and you may not agree with his non-G-d position or the theory he presents along with an interesting array of scientific evidence. If you have raised or have spent a lot of time with children you will find that you share another common area of experience that is consistent with the author's information. This does not mean that you will end up coming to or agreeing with the author's conclusions, after all this is still a theory and not necessarily a scientific fact. There are many places throughout the book where the author states his belief about what is going on minus any evidentiary support. Like many of you who are reading this, I can't throw books away. Even thinking about it makes me uncomfortable, so there is no way I could possibly hold a book over a garbage can and just let it drop. Ugh.I don't know why this should be, to be honest. I mean, they're just books, right? Paper and ink that anyone can buy. And not even special books - first edition, autor-signed, given to me by my beloved grandmother on her deathbed. I would be hard-pressed to throw away even bad books. Mein Kampf, Dianetics, A Series of Unfortunate Events - I would save even these from the trashpile. Not because they're worth reading, but because they're books.I'm not a squishy, sentimental man, either. I can tell dead baby jokes without flinching. I've participated in the burning of an American Flag. I've flipped off the White House (it was the Bush era - I couldn't NOT flip it off), and if you give me a photo of the Pope, I'm pretty sure I can tear it up on live TV.So what is it about these mass-produced blocks of paper that instills in me such reverence? This question is part of what Bruce Hood discusses in his book Supersense, appropriately subtitled, "Why we believe in the unbelievable."Hood is a psychologist by trade, and this book is an investigation into why we persistently believe in things for which we have no evidence. This can range from religious adherence and the firm belief in things like "holiness" and "sinfulness" all the way to haunted houses, superstitious behavior, and the belief that evil acts can somehow "taint" a physical object. In one demonstration that he refers to throughout the book, Hood offers a cardigan to his audience. It's a nice enough sweater, perhaps a little out of date, but clean and it looks comfortable. It's the kind of cardigan you might wear on a chilly autumn evening and think nothing of it.Then Hood tells the audience that the sweater belonged to Fred West. For those of us who are not from England, Fred West is one of the most notorious serial killers of the last century. Over a span of twenty years, he and his wife tortured, raped and murdered at least twelve girls, two of whom were their own daughters. They're very well-known in England, and as soon as people found out that the nice comfortable cardigan had belonged to Fred West, no one wanted to touch it, much less put it on. Even though there's no rational basis to believe so, many people believed that there was some kind of contamination linked to the sweater, and feared that Fred West's evil would somehow transfer to them.As someone who tries to be rational as much as possible, I have found myself wondering why I hold on to beliefs that I know are fundamentally irrational. I wonder it even more when I watch the news or surf the internet and see how many people believe in things like "healing energy," homeopathy, guardian angels, magic spells and the like. "What century are we living in?" I ask myself as I curl up into a ball and weep. The Enlightenment was only two hundred years ago - why are we backsliding?Thinkers and scientists such as Richard Dawkins believe that this kind of fundamental irrationality is a learned trait. Parents pass it on to children, who then pass it on to theirs. Dawkins even goes so far as to consider bringing your child to church to be "child abuse," and believe that if only we can break the chain of superstition, a new Age of Reason will emerge.Hood disagrees, and he makes a pretty compelling case. He doesn't argue for the existence of the supernatural at all in this book, but rather the sense of the supernatural - the Supersense, as he calls it. This is the feeling that someone is watching us, the belief that one object is somehow more "special" than another, identical object. It is the reason we plead with our computers when they don't work, why we anthropomorphise so many things is our world, and why we revere the remains of saints and shun the sweaters of murderers. It is a sense that there should be a supernatural world out there, even if we can't prove it.Hood believes that the origin of this supersense is in the way our early minds develop as infants. In that very early stage of life, we try to make sense of the world as best we can. Babies are little scientists, testing reality against their observations again and again, and coming up with hypotheses about how the world should work. This need to understand the world is hard-wired into our brains as part of our "mind design," and not only can we never get rid of it, it may be essential to our development into fully-formed human beings.By testing children and how they observe the world, Hood tries to see how the mind develops from birth onwards, without the years of cultural indoctrination that Dawkins and those of similar opinion decry. These tests show how children expect reality to behave, and what happens when their expectations don't match their observations. He looks at how children imbue the world with life and purpose - the Sun, always smiling in children's drawings, exists to give us light, trees to shade us and the grass is there for us to play on. This endowment of purpose, or telos, if we're going to be philosophical and pompous, is something we continue to do even into adulthood.The more we learn about the world, the more we find out that it doesn't follow the common-sense rules that we laid down in our infancy. It's hard to accept, for example, that we aren't the end product of evolution - even worse, evolution has no end product in mind. What's more, after our brains went through years and years of classifying the world into neat little categories such as "living/non-living; intelligent/non-intelligent; plant/animal," it's jarring to know that we're only 5% of the way off from chimpanzees and 50% off from being bananas!Children intuit the world as they grow, and that is part of the mind-building process. This is the architecture of our minds. More often than not, it produces a rational picture of the world and how it works, but not always - the trade-off is that some supernatural ideas come along for the ride. While the mind-building process does prepare us to exist in the greater world, it also makes us fundamentally irrational beings. Some people are more able to overcome this irrationality than others, but even the hard-core skeptics may find it difficult to put on the sweater of Fred West, or have trouble not smiling when they're in the presence of the sweater of Fred Rogers.In a way, this book was both a disappointment and a relief. I have always hoped that one day humanity would rise above its irrationality and start appreciating the world for what it is, instead of wasting time looking for things that just aren't there. But if Hood's hypothesis is correct, that's never going to happen. As long as we are human, there will always be a streak of the irrational in us. Try as we might, we will always have superstitions, strange beliefs, and we will always be looking for things that we cannot see.And of course, perhaps this is a good thing. This irrationality is what gives us passion, it's what connects us together as a species and as societies. This belief in the sacred, for example, is what gives rise to shared values in a community and a shared sense of what is important and what is forbidden. Without it, we'd be a species of Lex Luthors - fundamentally selfish, sociopathic and without the ability to connect to others.On a personal note, it means that maybe I don't have to be so hard on myself. I mean, being rational is great and all, but when you get to the point where you find yourself thinking something like, "Yeah, what is the big deal about incest?" then you know that it's time to give the prefrontal cortex a break. And instead of beating myself up for not being able to completely disavow all the goofy little supernatural things that I cling to, perhaps I can just accept them as part of what makes me who I am. I know there's nothing truly special about my books, but the supersense tells me otherwise.
