"The Dandelion Insurrection" is being toted as the new Bible for resistance. How people should react to the awful things happening all around us. A guide to a better world.Not even close. It is a book built on "reaction". Yes, the sweeping ideals of the book may have value in a world Sun projects, but what if you never had to go to war with the ruling classes? What if you never had to worry about your government selling you and yours down the river for profit?Wouldn't it be better to make sure things NEVER get as bad as they are in the book?Instead of preparing for martial law and government/police troops, doesn't it make more sense to be PROACTIVE? You know, find politicians on either side of the political line who honestly want to help the masses and not the rich, and then educate them as to the realities of goverment/corporate influence and corruption. Show them exactly how it plays out for those at the furthest end of society. Fill their head and offices with statistics and verifiable information to support your claims.If no politicians is sympathetic, then find someone who WILL run and educate them. MAKE the elections be ABOUT THE ISSUES, not about who looks/sounds better on Twitter/Facebook/Instagram. Have politicians SHOW their plans, in detail, before you believe their goals will honestly help the common person in this society. If a politician does not follow up on the goals set forth in their campaign, petition to have them removed from office as they have made a verbal breach of promise to those who voted FOR THEM.Make the government offices answer to the common person, just as they were always meant to. It is a government of the people, by the people, for the people. Stop waiting for a crisis to "show your true colors". Fix the problem NOW, before any of this overblown nonsense talked about in the book has a chance to take place.If your response to my comments are along the lines "Things are already horrible!", then you obviously have no desire to lift a finger to educate (not teaching pointless chants and catchy slogans) or empower yourself or any other human on this planet. You need to excuse yourself from any agenda because you have no desire to do what needs to be done for proper change and growth.Learn from both your own resources as well as those used by your enemies for if you do not understand why your enemies think/feel/say the things they do, you have no idea how to even begin properly opposing them, and you will have no clue where they will turn when opposed. Learn their lessons, and you'll be ahead of them.The best thing "The Dandelion Insurrection" attempts to teach is taking the time to learn that there are people under the uniforms, and even under the invectives/labels/insults you might like to dump on those who think differently than you. We are all humans, and we ALL deserve courtesy and respect, even if we don't like that person.
I read a blog post that suggested this book and the summary sounded interesting, so I purchased it. I loved the diversity of the characters who were all working towards a common goal. The idea that a group of people with strong ties to their French heritage were so pivotal in the fight for freedom was really neat. All of the characters had interesting backgrounds and used the talents they had to bring about change. A ray of hope in this world right now.
Jim is now living in another dimension, another zip code in the ethereal regions beyond, but he would have loved this book, as do I. I thought this was an amazing book, and in some ways joins some of the wonderful apocalyptic literature, some of it unfortunately written under the Young Adult branding. The truth is, as the father of my native land José Martí once said, that children are the hope of the world - "los niños son la esperanza del mundo." We are immersed in an era of distrust, greed, indifference to the plight of the many. This book shows the power of community, the power, as we said in the Occupy Movement, of the 99%. This is about solidarity, about love, and ultimately about revolution. Revolution comes from revolvere, to roll back, to move in a circular orbit... Our forefathers when they wrote the Declaration of Independence said "That whenever any Form of Government becomes destructive of these ends, it is the Right of the People to alter or to abolish it, and to institute new Government, laying its foundation on such principles and organizing its powers in such form, as to them shall seem most likely to effect their Safety and Happiness."We have our marching orders from our forefathers and mothers. Our planet is hanging in the balance. We honor and obey Mammon. Only love will save us.Buy this book. I bought ten copies directly from the author, to give away to people I thought should read it. I will buy twenty of her new book, because we need the inspiration to go forth and create a new world, with love at the forefront.Am I an idealist? You bet!
