I gave "Heart of a Lion" 5 stars because:1. ... It captured my attention and interest immediately, in the first few pages; I read it in 2 sittings (literally) - I didn't want to stop reading;2. ... The plot and the characters were believable;3. ... The narrative descriptions made me feel as though I was right in themiddle if the story, a participant not just an observer;4. ... In my nearly 65 years of life I have had a number of experiences which I could identify with various experiences of several of the characters;5. ... I was impressed with the manner in which the characters, some more than others, interpreted their interaction with our Creator - it help me see new ways to understand old truths;6. ... I felt as though I had worshipped as I read "Heart of a Lion;"7. ... Also, as an aside, the grammar and story continuity were superb, causing no challenge to my being able to focus on what was happening in the story;I would recommend this book to anyone who might have ever wondered what it might have been like to live in the days before and just after the Flood. This novel is appropriate for teens through senior adults.Be prepared to laugh, cry, hold your breath and be amazed as you discover the "Heart of the Lion."

I generally enjoy historical fiction, but this book seemed to deviate too far from scripture. Often I found myself simply skimming pages just to finish the story. The author captures well the highs and lows of faith and lack thereof. I could feel the worry that Noah and his family felt, wondering, "are we crazy, have we heard God correctly?"But the inaccuracies were rampant:Scripture says that man was vegetarian before the flood, but the author has them eating meat.Genesis 6:9 says "Noah was a righteous man, blameless among the people of his time, and he walked faithfully with God." But the author presents him as overcome by sexual temptation and unable to separate himself from lust. Can he support this idea? If not, don't mess with God's appraisal of the man. And certainly DO NOT imply that sexual immorality is the norm.I got tired of the author implying that sin came to "helpless men" besieged by immoral women. Sure there are immoral women, but God tells us that sin entered the world through one man - Romans 5:12. There is a dangerous tendency in men in some "Christian" circles to blame women for the sin of man, but God never says this nor treats women thusly.Galatians 3:28 English Standard Version (ESV)There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither slave nor free, there is no male and female, for you are all one in Christ Jesus.I doubt I will read another book by the author.

I have always loved Gilbert Morris' novels which is why I bought this one. However, he did not hold up to his usual standard of excellence. When anyone attempts to write fiction based on a Biblical character, they need to be very careful to stick to what is Biblically accurate. As has been pointed out in other reviews, he had them eating meat before the flood. He also mentioned seeing lights that shone like the rainbow. How did they know what a rainbow looked like before the first rainbow occurred AFTER the flood. I also don't believe that there was rain and thunder storms before the flood. He told a good story which held my interest but after reading some of these inaccuracies I was disappointed. I will stick to reading his books that are historical fiction, but not based on Bible characters.

The author had a good plot, but seemed to be honing his writing skills as he wrote. The first part of the book contained strange similies such as a man belching like a frog that boomed. Also, the author had Noah eating meat, even though Genesis says only after the flood that animals would be good for eating. Also, he had Noah's son being born before he began the ark and one of them even in charge of engineering it. But the Bible says that Shem, the oldest, was 100 years old two years after the flood. Since Noah took 100 years to build the ark, Shem wasn't even born until two years after Noah began building it. Also, he talked about flat land at the bottom of the mountain with emerald grass, then said the land was rocky and mountainous.I did appreciate that he went into Noah preaching before the flood and life aboard the ark. I have read two other books about Noah and, though one was superbly written, neiter covered these two things.

Greek myths are tricky to depict in a fixed-frame visual format due to their multiple characters, intersecting storylines and extravagant backgrounds (Hades, Olympus.) Narrators/illustrators Amanda Brock, Monica Sweeney, and Becky Thomas do a credible job of writing concise yet interesting text boxes that accompany each frame. The problem with this work is that the pictorial narrative doesn’t pop. There’s a sameness to the detailed panels that give the 33 stories a ‘been there, done that’ feel. The repetitive visual tone may be due to the muted color palette of bricks used in the majority of the scenes – the trio uses lots of reds and browns, tans and greys, green and blacks, suggesting a limited LEGO collection of bricks, figures, and miscellany. Other production problems include panels where you can see the figures casting shadows (page 149, for example) suggesting that insufficient light was used to illuminate the scene for the greatest clarity and visual effect. Scene-after-scene features a top-down view. While allowing for a panoramic visual, the perspective got boring over time. Faulty printing also mars this enterprising work. There are vibrantly illustrated frames (the Daedalus and Icarus chapter, for instance), but most frames - especially the smaller ones – are dark and opaque suggesting a problem with the printer’s handling of the plates and ink on press. Finally, my copy split along the spine and pages even before I finished reading the entire book (see pix.)This is an ambitious work that shows lots of heart and focus. It’s also a mediocre one given the numerous artistic, production, and printing challenges. A boldly executed but pricey enterprise.

IMPORTANT TIP FOR PARENTS - this is NOT recommended for smaller kids - there is GRAPHIC VIOLENCE depicted in this book (in so far as you can do that with Legos).Understand what this book is/isn't.1) This book IS a book that shows the stories of some classic Greek myths using Lego's and to that end it does a really fine job. As an adult who is a fan of both Legos and Greek Myths I have enjoyed reading it2) This book is NOT intended for little kids (in my opinion). If you are familiar with Greek myths you'll know that many of the stories involve negative consequences like death and other 'adult' themes. This book does slightly water down these adult themes but not enough to make it appropriate for little kids. Its without a doubt a PG 13 book.3) This book IS a book that shows full color pics and great Lego builds4) This book is NOT a book for easy readers - the Greek names alone are a challenge and they will quickly frustrate early readers.Personally I DO like the book and am happy with it overall but I believe the maker should provide an "FYI to Parents" so they'll know in advance. Also, while the book is beautiful in terms of the pics and it's large size the quality of the binding is poor - our binding came apart after the first read and the pages are already falling out - which is a shame.

My sons are very into Greek Mythology (thanks to Percy Jackson) and legos, so they are obsessed with this book to the point that a couple months later it has all but fallen apart from love. They read the myths, learn new facts, and then rush off to recreate their own monsters and creatures. I wish the book were sturdier, but I don't think it's the fault of the book given the countless hours of use and love it has received from my 7 and 8 year old boys.

The stories are entertaining. Pictures and stories are pretty loyal to the myths we know and love. The book however, began to fall apart just weeks after I bought it, with moderate use and with great care. I can't imagine what would happen if someone were to handle it a great deal or not put it away properly. It is useless after 2 months.

Great idea: perhaps a little too graphic and true to the real Greek myths for children. I skip the dismemberment and try to introduce the kids to the general myth ideas without the gore.

My son loves anything that has to do with Greek mythology and we have approximately 17 tons of LEGO so match made in heaven.

Got this as a gift for my husband who is a huge fan of Lego and Greek mythology. It was a huge hit and he loved it.

A must for lego fans. We are now collecting these books for our lego collection.

This very opinionated book and should be called Neo4j Graph Databases instead. It is written in very home driven fashion by Neo4j founders to boost their database licensing business. If you are looking to work with open source graph databases and gremlin then look elsewhere. All examples are written using Neo4j's proprietary query language Cypher. I had high expectations for this book as all O'Reilly publications but this one fell short.

Although this book is not bad, I would not choose to purchase it again, for three reasons:1) It is available as an ebook from my library.2) It is not good as a reference book. Usually I purchase books that I would like to refer back to frequently, since accessing library PDFs and e-books requires a login and they are annoying to read. This one is not useful enough as a reference book to justify more than one or two reads-through.3) The book really focuses on one type of database software. Much of the material is too general or introductory to be useful, and the rest is too specific. Thus, the high cost ($30+ for little over 100 pages) is not well justified.

The book is too shallow and is rather a collection of marketing materials rather than a technical reference and guide. The book goes on and on on how good the graph databases are compared to the relational ones without really explaining how you can achieve performance in such tasks having just the single-dimensional computer memory. The examples demonstrate primitive scenarios that are far from, say, a need to model behaviour of all companies in a national market trading different goods and services using different contracts, representatives / dealers / agents, different payment terms / banks and shipping. That actually marketing booklet avoids this question very carefully as if it was not the main challenge for national governments and economists worldwide. Weaknesses of graph databases are not mentioned at all. The book is too small for $20 Kindle edition. Having this professional deepness it should offer at least 800 pages of simple news-like reading entertainment. This is the second O'Reilly book that I have tried and again I am disappointed that the mystical animal design misleads you into believing that the book has thoroughness and depth of a biological organism. I hope the O'Reilly men did not mean the audience by that picture as it would be a real offence. We deserve better books for that price and your nice designs on the cover won't help you anymore. Not buying a third one, but may recommend for a secondary school.

This book is mis-titled. It should be "Introduction to Graph Databases with Neo4j". The authors are all employees with Neo4j, and all of the discussion and examples use Neo4j. Even the query examples are limited to a language that is only supported by Neo4j! Yes other vendors are mentioned at the beginning but that is it, and the title implies more general coverage. Change the title to be more honest, or include examples from other products and include scripting language samples that are supported by more than one vendor (eg. SPARQL).

Solid book. Starts with good theory and builds from there. Also liked how they demonstrated graph modeling and how it compares and translates to relational modeling. I'm using Gremlin but the query concepts were easily translated.

Already has filled in many holes in my understanding. Written with great clarity for newbies like myself coming from corporate RDBMS backgrounds.

Strong Graph Database Resource

I started reading the Amazon "Look Inside" for this book and I could not put it down. Purchased the kindle version, continued reading on my Kindle Fire at home, on my cloud reader at work, I am learning so much so fast I cannot believe it. I arrived at this book with about 18 years database programming experience, but had never seen anything about graph databases before. This is a totally awesome book!

If I had to summarize the first part of Peter Gray’s book in a few words, it would be something like the following: “Traditional schools are too authoritarian. Traditional education stifles children’s curiosity and desire to learn by telling them what to study and by teaching them to do as they are told.” This part of the book, where he presents his understanding of the historical and psychological causes and human impact of traditional schooling (whether public or private), is extraordinarily compelling, and has forever changed my perspective on traditional education. Having read Dr Gray’s book, I will no longer take for granted that the use of a standard curriculum for everyone is a good idea, and I am thoroughly convinced that extinguishing a person’s natural desire to learn is at the root of many if not every unmotivated student. Whatever else we do, we must keep our children – and ourselves – wanting to learn, which is easy, Dr Gray argues, if we allow everyone to learn what about what interests them.Although equally well-argued, I was less convinced by the second part of his book, his proposal for a solution. Although I am now thoroughly convinced that the student needs to be significantly involved in setting the direction of his learning (I would add, to the extent possible from his age and level of maturity), the specific implementation of this practice I believe needs some further refinement. Essentially, Dr Gray argues for the widespread introduction of “unschooling” environments and specifically schools like the Sudbury Valley schools that encourage each student from a very early age to choose on their own what to study, and how. I had been unaware of the unschooling movement and the Sudbury Valley schools prior to reading this book, and so began my own investigation on these topics. Among other things, I learned that we live near one of these schools, and so I went to check it out. After observing the school and after further reading and reflection, I came to the conclusion that there are at least two issues with Dr’s Gray’s “unschooling” approach as a solution for some of the problems with traditional schooling. The first problem is that this type of schools (deliberately?) appears to lack sufficient resources, both human and otherwise. If children are in an environment that includes a kitchen and a shop but not a PhD in mathematics, it seems highly unlikely that they will discover a natural bent for quantum physics and calculus. I remember seeing an extraordinary video clip years ago where Jesse Jackson led a tour of two cross town public high schools, one white and one black, showing the dramatic differences in facilities available. (The white high school included computers, sophisticated science equipment, a beautiful track and an Olympic size pool, while the black high school had outdated textbooks, less rigorous academics and a dramatically lower graduation rate.) Perhaps the local Sudbury Valley-type school I saw was unique, but I think that unless we are simultaneously offering them the best possible resources, our children will never rise to their full potential via unschooling. The second issue I have with unschooling as advocated by Dr Gray is his excessive adulation for learning from one’s childhood peers. It is certainly true that kids can and do learn things from their peers, but many of those things (the pressure to conform, bullying, and drug use, to name a few) are challenges that I believe are better handled with the support of caring adults. It would be interesting to put Dr Gray in the same room with Gordon Neufeld and Gabor Mate, the authors of another excellent book, Hold On to Your Kids. This book is an excellent complement to the many positive/attachment parenting books now available (Peaceful Parents Happy Kids, Playful Parenting, and Two Thousand Kisses a Day are among my favorites). Neufeld and Mate’s book, also well worth the time, focuses on the external pressure from peers that have been affecting the last few generations of children, and not in a good way. Although both books have their share of unsubstantiated assertions, I found myself agreeing much more often with Drs Neufeld and Mate than with Dr Gray regarding peer relationships. Interestingly, both books are highly critical of our current traditional method of schooling, but they come to very different conclusions about what to do about it. It would certainly be interesting to read these two books together.Since presumably many readers of this review will not be visiting a Sudbury Valley type school in person, I thought it might be worth closing with some further reflections on my visits there. I was able to visit the local Sudbury Valley type school three times, and twice was able to spend a few hours interacting with students of various ages and reviewing the artifacts of various processes including the judicial committee. The children I spoke with seemed generally satisfied with attending this school and many were reasonably articulate as to its value to them, but to me many of them appeared as if they were drifting. Few seemed to have identified areas of learning about which they were passionate, or even especially interested in. The minutes from the judicial committee also made it clear that although the authority of the school may rest with the student-faculty committee, rules and constraints on behavior are as prevalent as in a traditional school. In looking at educational options for my son, I have now visited a fairly large number of schools. For whatever it is worth, my most important litmus test for a school has become to see whether the students and staff are going about their day with enthusiasm and joy. Sadly, it is not something I typically see, and it was not apparent at this school either.Back to Dr Gray’s book. In spite of my disagreement with some of Dr Gray’s conclusions, I have decided I must give it a 5-star rating because of his cogent presentation of his ideas and because those ideas have forever altered my views on traditional schooling. (As I learned, many of those ideas were initially presented in his Psychology Today column, but I did find that the book presentation of those ideas really strengthened and solidified his views in a way that reading the columns alone did not.) I am glad that he wrote it, and would recommend it to anyone trying to understand how we learn best.

Is homeschooling better than sending children to school? Does unschooling work? How successful are the young adults coming out of Sudbury Schools?Gray answers these three questions – and many more on the subject of education – in a way that is all but impossible to argue. However, I dock him one star because there's a bit of faulty logic. Other reviewers have come down hard on him RE the whole hunter-gatherer thing, but they ignore the success of the Sudbury schools and that experiment that was done with a computer and poor Indian children. They also have no idea that families with a LOT fewer than 48 children in them, lol, have unschooled, and are successfully unschooling, their children. So, maybe it's not a great idea to emphasize hunter-gatherer societies so much. That aside, I will still recommend reading this book if your child is struggling in a traditional school setting, and discover the best alternative. If you’re teetering on the edge of deciding to unschool your children, but aren’t quite sure because of the negativity you’ve read about it on the Internet, read this book to help you reach a decision with confidence. This is one of two books I’ve read about education lately that have, as an extra bonus, helped me to understand more fully why I despised my years as an elementary school teacher.

Dr. Gray provides a very thorough overview of the history of education in the U.S. and he illustrates how education should change. Our children attend a "highly rated" public school and are considered advanced, but lately I've noticed that the homework is too much and something about how the school approached education just didn't feel right. Our once enthusiastic learners were starting to hate school and still had several years until high school graduation. We decided to investigate sending our kids to a school modeled after Sudbury and had a few reservations so I ordered this book. This book really helped answer the questions and concerns that we had with self-directed education. After reading this book, I know that I can trust my children to be in charge of their own education. I would recommend that anyone with a high level of curiosity for new ideas read this book for another point of view on our education system. And, if you're like us and feel let down by the public schools, then you MUST read this book.

This book lays out the concepts and uses of VHDL better than any other textbook of its kind. It's easy to follow and one of the rare textbooks that are easy to read. It's not just page after page of dry technical reading. If you're looking for a book to learn VHDL this is the one to buy.

Chapter 1 to Chapter 3: Lot of emphasis is given by the authors to cover the basic fundamentals required for the design. Chapter 1 to 4 has the many concept check examples and exercises with meaningful questions. But still it lacks the practicality and clarity of explanation. The application of the logic gates and the practical scenarios need to be discussed in more details during the next edition. The current industrial standard is low power designs and voltage levels are less than 5 Volt and even 3.3, 2.8 and 1.5 volt. This need to be mentioned in the section 3.3 with the noise margin and driving loads. Effectively for the undergraduate courses the book can serve the good purpose to understand the digital terminology and logic circuit design.Chapter 4 discusses about the combinational logic design and author has covered the concepts in detail with the minimization techniques. For the further improvement in this book, authors can think about adding the area optimization techniques, the parallel logic and concurrent logic and the design performance. Even for better readability the medium complex examples need to be discussed in this chapter.Chapter 5 has information about the basic of VHDL and with reference to the initial chapters the emphasis is given to implement the logic structure. This chapter has VHDL codes for some functionality. Still it lacks the basic difference between structural, behavior and RTL description. For small density logic the approach explained by the authors is good but as design complexity increases the approach is not suitable. So during the next edition it is better to add the different types of VHDL abstractions with the examples.Chapter 6 has VHDL codes and it lacks the naming conventions followed in the practical world. Even the sequence should be MUX, Demux, Advantages and disadvantages with VHDL implementations and then use of decoders, encoders. On page 183-184 there is functional issue in the design of encoder and author should correct this. The encoder all inputs are logic “0000” then the output is also “00” in the design. So according to the given VHDL description output is “00” for input “0001” and for when others condition that may be “0000”. Under such circumstances it is essential to add the status flag functionality to generate flag output as logic ‘1’ when all inputs of encoder are logic ‘0’.Chapter 7 page 255 has the tmargin delay but the cause of the delay is not explained properly. The Process, Voltage Temperature variation or On-chip-variation need to be explained with some practical example then the timing diagram and the maximum frequency calculation section can be more meaningful and readers will be able to correlate the same with the practical scenarios.Chapter 8: VHDL constructs like if-then-else has potential problem in the description. Please check page 271 code first “Due to missing ‘else’ clause it infers the latch. But author has described this as combinational logic. Unnecessary unintentional latches are inferred in the design. In this chapter most of the example lacks the naming conventions. Even the quality of example need to be improved, even there is need to add few practical applications.Chapter 9 has sequential logic VHDL description; still it lacks the difference between the behavior and RTL. The RTL coding should be improved with the meaningful naming conventions and with some additional complex functionality.Chapter 10 and 11 has only theoretical information about the memories and programmable logic and this can be improved with some practical scenarios and with few examples and realization of VHDL into synthesis.Chapter 12 and 13 covers VHDL coding of adders to processor but still the linking of the concept to implement the design is lacking in this. These two chapters can be improved by adding other concepts related with RTL design, synthesis and design implementation using FPGA or ASIC.Overall the book covers many concepts but lacks the practical scenarios and even it lacks the complex example design, synthesis and implementation. But this book is good for beginners and students to understand the digital concepts and basics of VHDL programming.

Excellent textbook!
