Also this was also a well written book. I really enjoyed reading all of these books

Another Thoene good book. I'm looking forward to others in this series.

Plot twists actually worked. I don't often get surprised, but some parts of this book actually managed that. Mostly, it's very predictable, but the bird's funny, the plot keeps moving, and the characters are likable if not totally endearing. The Thoenes haven't won all those writing awards for no reason. I don't think this is their best series, but it's all right.

This book reads very much like reading someones journal about their travels. Very little is actual dialogue between the characters. The covers of all three of the books display a woman prominently, but do not be fooled. They are mere background players to the man telling the story. This, and the other two, are great from a history aspect of America in the 1800s, but not much else. I like to see more interaction between the characters and not just what seem like recollections of the event from the leading male.

Thank you

Review

“A mirthful and wise diagnosis of what ails us: Schulz dances us through science, psychology, and literature in a sparkling history of (and ode to) human error.” (Publishers Weekly)“[A]n insightful and delightful discussion of the errors of our ways. . . . Schulz remains good company -- a warm, witty and welcome presence. . . . [S]he combines lucid prose with perfect comic timing. . . . Being Wrong is smart and lively.” (New York Times Book Review)“So, please take this advice: Read BEING WRONG, because it’s the right thing to do.” (Lisa Ko, author of The Leavers)“Kathryn Schulz’s brilliant, spirited, and necessary inquiry into the essential humanity of error will leave you feeling intoxicatingly wrongheaded.” (Tom Vanderbilt, bestselling author of TRAFFIC)“[A]n unusual examination of the virtue and peril of being wrong and of all the ways we think we know things that just ain’t so.” (Boston Globe)“Engrossing.... In the spirit of Blink and Predictably Irrational (but with a large helping of erudition)... Schulz writes with such lucidity and wit that her philosophical enquiry becomes a page-turner.” (Publishers Weekly (starred review))“Kathryn Schulz has given us a brilliant and remarkably upbeat account of the long history of human error. If Being Wrong is this smart and illuminating, I don’t want to be right!” (Steven Johnson, bestselling author of THE GHOST MAP and EVERYTHING BAD IS GOOD FOR YOU)“Kathryn Schultz is engaging, witty and fascinating as she uses a full arsenal of academic research, colorful stories, philosophical arguments and personal anecdotes to create a riveting account of why we, mostly, have been wrong about being wrong.” (Frans Johansson, author of THE MEDICI EFFECT)“Both wise and clever, full of fun and surprise...[BEING WRONG] could also be enormously useful—there are very few problems we face...that couldn’t be helpfully addressed if we we were willing to at least entertain the idea that we might not be entirely right.” (Bill McKibben, author of EAARTH: Making a Life on a Tough New Planet)“A funny and philosophical meditation on why error is mostly a humane, courageous and extremely desirable human trait. [Schulz] flies high in the intellectual skies, leaving beautiful sunlit contrails....It’s lovely to watch this idea warm in Ms. Schulz’s hands.” (Dwight Garner, New York Times)

From the Back Cover

To err is human. Yet most of us go through life assuming (and sometimes insisting) that we are right about nearly everything, from the origins of the universe to how to load the dishwasher. In Being Wrong, journalist Kathryn Schulz explores why we find it so gratifying to be right and so maddening to be mistaken. Drawing on thinkers as varied as Augustine, Darwin, Freud, Gertrude Stein, Alan Greenspan, and Groucho Marx, she shows that error is both a given and a gift—one that can transform our worldviews, our relationships, and ourselves.

#14,172 in Books (See Top 100 in Books)

This book is a tour of belief, knowledge and doubt by way of psychology and a heavy dose of philosophy. If you have any interest in epistemology, then this book is a must read! Schulz takes a look at inductive reasoning and how it's so efficient and serves us so well, but when it fails, it can fail hard. She shines a light on the fallibility of our physical senses and memory and how what seems so obviously right is sometimes absolutely wrong. While this may be paradigm shifting (and disturbing) for some people who haven't ever considered what one self can actually know, you don't need to fear succumbing to hard solipsism after reading this book. The author takes a look at why we fear being wrong so strongly, and how we often can't admit we are wrong until we have a new "right" theory to replace our wrong one. We discover that our error blindness keeps us from perceiving our own errors without hampering our ability to find the same or similar error in others. Practically all facets of our lives are affected by error - from politics to religion to love. Can we eliminate error? Even if it is possible, SHOULD WE? Error appears to be a uniquely human endeavor - as such we should embrace it (at least some of the time). The joy of being wrong is experienced daily through optical illusions, humor and art.Favorite quotes from the book:(pg. 31) there is a slippery slope between advocating the elimination of putatively erroneous beliefs, and advocating theelimination of the institutions, cultures, and—most alarmingly—people who hold them(pg 32) This was the pivotal insight of the Scientific Revolution: that the advancement of knowledge depends on currenttheories collapsing in the face of new insights and discoveries. In this model of progress, errors do not lead usaway from the truth. Instead, they edge us incrementally toward(pg. 70) In sum: we love to know things, but ultimately we can't know for sure that we know them; we are bad at recognizing when we don't know something; and we are very, very good at making stuff up.(pg 82) It’s not exactly news that most people are reluctant to admit their ignorance. But the point here is not that we arebad at saying “I don’t know.” The point is that we are bad at knowing we don’t know.(pg 86) As that suggests, the idea of knowledge and the idea of error are fundamentally incompatible. When we claim toknow something, we are essentially saying that we can’t be wrong. If we want to contend with the possibilitythat we could be wrong, then the idea of knowledge won’t serve us; we need to embrace the idea of beliefinstead. This might feel like an unwelcome move, since all of us prefer to think that we know things rather than“merely” believing them.(pg 106) In other words, if we want to discredit a belief, we will argue that it is advantageous, whereas if we want tochampion it, we will argue that it is true. That’s why we downplay or dismiss the self-serving aspects of our ownconvictions, even as we are quick to detect them in other people’s beliefs.(pg 123) leaping to conclusions is what we always do in inductive reasoning, but we generally only call it that when theprocess fails us—that is, when we leap to wrong conclusions. In those instances, our habit of relying on meagerevidence, normally so clever, suddenly looks foolish(pg 141) The vast majority of our beliefs are really beliefs once removed. Our faith that we are right is faith that someoneelse is right. This reliance on other people’s knowledge—those around us as well as those who came before us—is, on balance, a very good thing. Life is short, and most of us don’t want to spend any more of it than absolutelynecessary trying to independently verify the facts(pg 157) Just as disturbing, and more important, we also can’t be sure that some of the beliefs we hold today won’t appeargrievously unjust in the future. This is error-blindness as a moral problem: we can’t always know, today, whichof our current beliefs will someday come to seem ethically indefensible(pg 161) What zealots have in common, then, is the absolute conviction that they are right. In fact, of all the symbolicones and zeros that extremists use to write their ideological binary codes—us/them, same/different, good/evil—the fundamental one is right/wrong. Zealotry demands a complete rejection of the possibility of error.(pg 167) Doubt, it seems, is a skill—and one that, as we saw earlier, needs to be learned and honed. Credulity, bycontrast, appears to be something very like an instinct(pg 179) Whether you believe in flying saucers or the free market or just about anything else, you are (if you are human)prone to using certainty to avoid facing up to the fact that you could be wrong. That’s why, when we feelourselves losing ground in a fight, we often grow more rather than less adamant about our claims—not becausewe are so sure that we are right, but because we fear that we are not.(pg 187) Fortunately, we don’t get stuck in this place of pure wrongness very often. And we don’t get stuck there via thecollapse of small or medium size beliefs. We get stuck there when we are really wrong about really big things—beliefs so important and far-reaching that we can neither easily replace them nor easily live without them.(pg 199) All of us know people like this—people whose rigidity serves to protect a certain inner fragility, who cannotbend precisely because they are at risk of breaking. For that matter, all of us are people like this sometimes(pg 209) our beliefs come in bundles. That makes it hard to remove or replace one without affecting the others—and itgets harder as the belief in question gets more central(pg. 217) we are exceptionally bad at saying “I was wrong”—or at least, we are bad at leaving it at that. For most of us, it’s tough not to tack that “but” onto every admission of error.(pg 293) This is one of the most powerful ways being wrong can transform us: it can help us become more compassionatepeople. Being right might be fun but, as we’ve seen, it has a tendency to bring out the worst in us. By contrast, being wrong is often the farthest thing in the world from fun—and yet, in the end, it has the potential to bringout the best in us.

Shulz’s book is a thoughtful, powerful work that should be required reading for everyone in high school or college – and beyond. Part philosophy, part sociology and part reporting, “Being Wrong” feels a lot like Kahneman’s “Thinking: Fast and Slow” and, in my view, is every bit as helpful and important for understanding what drives us (as well as what steers us off a cliff or unhelpfully slams on the brakes). The chapter on Heartbreak is the most valuable piece of writing I’ve read on that issue despite the fact this isn’t a “self-help” book. The complexity of the issues here and the deftness and doggedness with which she pursues them puts her on par with Steven Johnson and maybe even Michael Lewis. Not a fast or simple read but very highly recommended.

If you want to get a new perspective on how beliefs and perceptions influence decisions then read this book. It is important to note that Kathryn Schultz has a stunning vocabulary. It is not often that I have to look up a word but with this book I did on several occasions. I have recommended this book to all of my friends and family. I have read parts to my wife and we both said "hmmm." I now examine why I feel someone or something else is wrong. As much as I don't want to agree with people that have opposing political views, I try to see if they are right because of this damn book. Great read and very inciteful.

“Error is the ultimate inside job. Yes, the world can be profoundly confusing; and yes, other people can mislead or deceive you. In the end, though, nobody but you can choose to believe your own beliefs.”(wrong thinking is from me — inside. Awful!)“That’s part of why recognizing our errors is such a strange experience: accustomed to disagreeing with other people, we suddenly find ourselves at odds with ourselves. Error, in that moment, is less an intellectual problem than an existential one—a crisis not in what we know, but in who we are. We hear something of that identity crisis in the questions we ask ourselves in the aftermath of error: What was I thinking? How could I have done that?’’ (20)Yep . . . that is me! Am I really . . . really . . . that . . . stupid? Nope! (right?)Well . . .“A whole lot of us go through life assuming that we are basically right, basically all the time, about basically everything: about our political and intellectual convictions, our religious and moral beliefs, our assessment of other people, our memories, our grasp of facts. As absurd as it sounds when we stop to think about it, our steady state seems to be one of unconsciously assuming that we are very close to omniscient.’’Right! I love that! Me and God — both know everything!Absurd? Well . . . I guess . . .Is this a new problem?“If you commit a moral transgression, you can turn to at least a handful of established options to help you cope with it. Virtually every religious tradition includes a ritual for penitence and purification, along the lines of confession in Catholicism and Yom Kippur in Judaism.’’(only religion?)“Twelve-step programs advise their participants to admit “to God, to ourselves, and to another human being the exact nature of our wrongs.” Even the criminal justice system, although far from reform-minded these days, has one foot rooted in a tradition of repentance and transformation. By contrast, if you commit an error—whether a minor one, such as realizing halfway through an argument that you are mistaken, or a major one, such as realizing halfway through a lifetime that you were wrong about your faith, your politics, yourself, your loved one, or your life’s work—you will not find any obvious, ready-to-hand resources to help you deal with it.’’This seems so odd. Errors, wrong decisions, false conclusions, are always with us and constantly hurting. Yet, we don’t know how to react. Or maybe we do know — and just . . . refuse.“In Part One, I trace the history of how we think about wrongness and the emergence of two opposing models of error—models that also reflect our ideas about what kind of creatures we are and what kind of universe we live in.’’“In Part Two, I explore the many factors that can cause us to screw up, from our senses to our higher cognitive processes to our social conventions.’’“In Part Three, I move from why we get things wrong to how we feel when we do so. This part of the book traces the emotional arc of erring, from the experience of realizing we went astray to how that experience can transform our worldviews, our relationships, and—most profoundly—ourselves.’’ Part I The Idea of Error1 Wrongology2 Two Models of WrongnessPart II The Origins of Error3 Our Senses4 Our Minds, Part One: Knowing, Not Knowing, and Making It Up5 Our Minds,Part Two: Belief6 Our Minds,Part Three: Evidence7 Our Society8 The Allure of CertaintyPart III The Experience of Error9 Being Wrong10 How Wrong?11 Denial and Acceptance12 Heartbreak13 TransformationPart IV Embracing Error14 The Paradox of Error15 The Optimistic Meta-Induction from the History of EverythingAuthor is a experienced journalist, not an academic. We used this Atlas when we were in France last month. It had every single road - even single lane ones out in the country - on it. We didn't get lost ever using this map. It is large and it is heavy. Initially, I whined about its weight (weight matters these days when you are taking only one suitcase!). However, after the first day of driving; I was congratulating my husband on his perspicacity in buying this Atlas. Excellent map!!

Well-marked roads and plenty of detail for most travel in the countryside. Even if you have a GPS this is a great supplement for planning routes. You can see more area at a glance and the color coding of major vs. minor roads is better than what I've seen on GPS maps, allowing you to overrule the GPS if it tries to send you onto a one-lane back road to shave a few hundred meters off your route. The only change I would like to see is having it ring-bound instead of spiral bound, so you could just take the pages you need for your trip without having to tear them out. The atlas is a bit bulky and heavy if you're trying to travel light and visiting only one or two regions of France. Of course you could buy individual paper maps for the regions you need; however, this is a better value and a more compact format.

Another new edition of the great Michelin Atlas of France. Michelin maps of Europe are simply the best around. I have been using them for 25 years of driving in Europe. They show every detail and will always get you exactly where you want to go. The 1:200,000 scale is eminently useable, and now the book has QR codes that you can scan with your smartphone and get the map instantly delivered to the phone. Very cool.

As others have stated, this atlas has what seems to be every road, major and minor, in France. It marks a lot of other information as well. We just completed a long road trip from the Pyrenees to Calais via circuitous and minor routes. Although we used a GPS with various mobile applications (Maps.me and Google, mostly), this atlas was a welcome addition to make sure we were heading where we really intended to (there are a log of places called Montreuil, for instance). We have a few gripes, though.First, is the legend. It is printed on a flap on the front cover and again on inside pages, but it doesn't cover everything it should. For instance, there are shaded lines with dashes of various sorts, some dashes like +++, some -+-+-, some ---. The legend says +++ this is a national boundary, but it doesn't say what is -+-+- or ---. I think they are departmental boundaries or perhaps administrative district boundaries, but it doesn't say. Similarly, there is a dark dashed line in spots -- for instance on page 339, it extends out into the Mediterrannee, but also goes on land. It might be a boundary for a Naturel area, but since it isn't in the legend, one is not certain. It would be much better if the legend actually included all of the line styles used in the maps.Second, there are all sorts of minor peaks and towers that are marked but not named. Having curiosity about some of these, I would love to have seen more of them named.Lastly, when transitioning from one page to another, it isn't particularly consistent. For instance, between the map on page 337 and 338, some areas are only under the shaded whole map border (on both pages), making that detail hard to make out. But between 338 and 342, there are many kilometers of overlap. As one drives from page to page, this makes it slow to follow. It would have been better if the border exactly delineated the area of the page distinct for that page -- then one would know that at the border of one page you where also at the border of the next page.

Anyone touring France is ill-advised to buy any maps or atlases other than Michelin's. Et pourquoi? Two reasons: first, they've been in the business of maps and guides as long as there's been motoring and moto-tyres. Second, experienced travelers rely in selecting lodging and restaurants in the legendary Red Guides ("Mich Rouge") for France and other countries. Not only are Michelin's inspectors of amazing incorruptablity is awarding their coveted 'stars' for the best places, but the little city and town maps in the Mich Rouges for whatever European country are keyed with little numbers to the Michelin atlas or map so you can flip from the atlas to the Mich Rouge and see exactly how you're entering Bordeaux or Nancy or Pampelmousse-sur-Rhone.

Ubiquitous. These seem to be sold at every highway rest stop in France. If you need to find how to get from point A to point B in France, then this is the atlas for you. We drove some not-much-improved roads in our journey through the French countryside -- some historic sites are on barely-improved roads, for example. The city maps could use some tweaking (we wandered around Mulhouse a bit). This is a road atlas and railway lines are not well delineated. Books like this are becoming obsolete as folks switch to GPS devices, though this presents alternative routings and shows the lay of the land better than any GPS device I've seen.

Adequate. But I didn't need it because the Garmin/TomTom thing in the rental car was fine. But my 2 main problems with this map book area.) there is no page that has an entire map of France. I was thinking in the front or back there'd be a one pager, just for an overview, with maybe the top 20 cities annotated. Each page is so zoomed in you can't use this map to visualize a plan.b.) it is so very heavy that if you purchase it stateside you'll hate yourself for adding such a heavy item to your suitcase.

we recently spent 5 days in Paris and north eastern france with a good GPS and a chip for europe...if you are like us and cant just close your eyes and pray that the GPS is accurate (and like having some information you cant get from GPS) this is a great mamp system and very well made

Very engrossing tale of one of the most amazing races from cost-to-cost in history that any car guy or gal would enjoy. While a fascinating story. it's not the best written book if I'm honest. You practically need a organization chart to keep track of all the people the author constantly bounces the story line between. Also, the father-son dynamics and navel-gazing "insights" are just a lot of fluff that you have to wade through to get to the good parts. However, it's worth it. Definitely worth the time for an entertaining read.

Narcissism and hedonism at its finest, fueled by wealth that enables a highly creative spirit on a quest to find "The Driver." In a revelation at the end of this quest that was fueled by his father's bequest of a box on the father's death bed, the author is given a spiritual gift that exceeds any material inheritance. This read gives suspense, excitement and a glimpse into a world few see or experience.

I very much enjoyed this compelling memoir. Maybe because of my shared connection with the movie, "Rendezvous," which I stumbled across nearly two decades ago, I was immediately hooked. I read this book during a recent vacation with my family, and found myself sneaking time with the book. Unfortunately, I also found myself struggling with the writing. If it were a scale of one to ten, rather than five stars, I'd have rated Mr. Roy's book a 7 or 8. With better editing, the story and book would have been a raging 10. Mr. Roy does a great job of sounding endearing and no more reckless than was absolutely required for the task at hand. Sure, the task at hand is inherently dangerous, but not necessarily reckless. Mr. Roy comes across as driven (sorry, seems like the best description) by a personal quest, rather than by carelessness, ego or testosterone.I have no idea how a casual reader would react to this story or material, so please take that as a caveat. With that being said, if you're an enthusiast this story might leave you with a similar effect as the movie, "Rendezvous," did. If you don't know about "Rendezvous," and the act of driving a good car quickly and competently on public roads gives you joy (or, I suppose, the IDEA of driving a good car quickly and competently on public roads gives you joy), buy them together and enjoy yourself. I noticed a handy bundle of this book, the book,"Cannonball," by Brock Yates, and the movie, "Rendezvous," together. All three might just tip the scale from thrilling to overwhelming. So be it.Rendezvous

This is one of my favorite books. The writing is very good and engaging, and there's a speed junkie in me that has always wanted to have nice cars and drive them quickly. I enjoyed reading this book so much (originally, borrowed from the library) that I bought one copy for my best friend and another to lend to friends who would appreciate this story. I say "story" because any car/driving junkie exaggerates a little or embellishes a bit, and I suspect the author is no different.

I've read this book cover to cover a few times, and it never gets old. It is excellent. The beginning is a little difficult to follow as it jumps around a bit, but I was into the book within the first few paragraphs. Anyone who is into cars has probably heard about Gumball, and Roy's account of his experiences with these rallies is amazing. He writes in a very visual way without going into too much detail. I would absolutely recommend this book to anyone and everyone who enjoys racing or cars in general.

Most entertaining book I've read on car racing in a while. A rogue and highly dangerous activity but I was able to live vicariously through Mr. Roy's exploits. It inspired me to buy an old M5 as a project... but not for sheer, all-out speed racing across the country. Enjoyed the book so much, I bought another copy for my brother.

I thought this was a great read ... whenever I put the book(my Kindle actually) down, I was anxious to pick it up again and continue reading. While Alex Roy in his Team Polizei BMW M5 is engaging in activities that are illegal -- road rallies and cross-country runs for speed, often triple digit speeds on public roads -- I couldn't help but get a vicarious guilty pleasure in hearing how these guys do it, and was impressed with the detailed planning and considerable technology involved. I'm a fan of F1 and ALMS racing, and its the endurance and off-track nature of Roy's activity that adds the spice. I'm no more likely to try to drive non-stop cross-country in 31 hours than I am to get a contract with Ferrari to drive in F1, but that doesn't mean you can't get some enjoyment out of the activities of those who do.If you're a gadget freak of any worth, you can't help but be impressed by the quantity (and high $dollar$ value)of the tech employed in evading traffic stops. I use a radar detector myself on long-distance trips, but Roy adds multiple scanners and CB radios, GPS's, cell phones, thermal and night vision imaging devices, night vision binoculars and even a spotter plane to his tech arsenal. If you check You Tube, you can find actual video of many of the stories/events that he tells about in the book. There may be some embellishment in the book, but not as much as you might think. The book is not Shakespeare but I think he does a good job of relating the story -- it made me feel like sort of like he was sitting across the table at the pizza joint telling me his tale. And for all those folks who are hung up on the police evading, illegal, dangerous nature of the activity ... do you watch any crime shows on TV, or any movies involving robberies? Do you condemn them because they are portraying illegal activities (often based on actual events)? If I'm passed in the middle of the night by a blue BMW driving on thermal imaging devices with no lights doing 140 mph+, I'm going to call the state police to report it -- but the book is still a great read!

Review

"...a good-looking volume, illustrated with historical photographs, set on pages that resemble pale green embroidered linen and sparkling with the force of Low's enthusiasm."Â - The Wall Street Journal"...a biography as engaging as it is comprehensive.... Neatly framed photographs and other period documents related to Low are smoothly incorporated into the book's overall clean design, appearing against pale green pages sometimes printed with a fabric texture that nods toward the Scouts' uniforms. Â ...skillfully sets Low's life story against historical backdrops...." -Publisher's Weekly

I found the life of Juliette Low fascinating, but I think this book tries to be too much to too many. It's packaged for young girls, but I doubt few of them would stick with it in spite of its lovely graphics and compelling old photos. After thoroughly researching her topic, the author succumbs to the temptation to put in every detail she's learned. I don't refer to Low's husband's mistress here, which disturbed another reviewer; I refer to too much historical background (e.g., WW I, Spanish-American War, etc.,) and repetitious quotes about Juliette's traits gleaned from loved ones' descriptions...all of which can slow down the story. That said, the author adroitly handled the fact that Low's husband was a slave holder and Confederate officer, while her brothers fought for the Union. This depicted in real terms the tragedy of families being torn apart during America's biggest war. Former Girl Scouts (now adults) will likely learn a great deal about the founder, all of it inspiring. I bought the book for a 13-year-old Scout, and predict that she'll be skipping whole passages while reading it to maintain her focus on Juliette. But that's OK, it might be re-read with expanded enjoyment over that girl's lifetime.

Very good book to read.

This is an excellent introducton to the Founder of Girl Scouting for children. I gave it as a gift and a Girl Scout bridging ceremony after having first reading it myself. Reading level is about 5th grand but it is a good read-aloud book for younger girls.

Great book, good details, we purchased it for a book report.

Very helpful book for my daughter who did her book report on Juliette Gordon Low.

I expected more from a book for middle school children. The story is not consistant with other books I have read.

I loved this book, because I am a girl scout. I loved learning more about her! I would read this book again! You should put this on your "to-read" list.

Juliette "Daisy" Gordon Low's life is a wonderful example of how you can find your passion late in life and still make a big difference in the world. She was a very talented and energetic lady, but she frittered away her early years with dilettantism and made a bad marriage that left her widowed but wealthy. It wasn't until she was over fifty that she was inspired by Sir Robert Baden-Powell to bring the Girl Guides program (later renamed Girl Scouts) to the United States. Once she'd finally found her life's purpose, she became a different woman. She was focused and unstoppable, even while battling the cancer that eventually took her life. This book covers Juliette Gordon Low's entire life. It's full of interesting history, but the first half has almost nothing about Girl Scouts. That's not a criticism of the book, it's just the way Daisy's life unfolded. I do think I would have wanted to know that ahead of time if I'd been handed the book as a youngster. I would have grown impatient wondering when it was going to get to the part about Girl Scouts. Even as an adult I was eager to get to that part, and I enjoyed the second half more than the first.Ginger Wadsworth has written several other books for young people, and she's also had a lifelong passion for the Girl Scout program. She's done a wonderful job with this biography. It's a must-read for anyone with a fondness for the Girl Scout organization, past and present. It's fun to compare your own experiences with those of the early Girl Scouts with regard to badges earned, service projects, and the uniforms they wore. The book has a lot of photos and copies of documents and advertisements to give you a real feeling for the era.Juliette Gordon Low was a spirited and liberated woman way ahead of her time who set out to inspire and liberate women for generations to come. She wasn't able to have children of her own, but all of us whose lives were shaped by Girl Scouting are her girls. She really did change the world.

The Buddha and the Borderline: My Recovery from Borderline Personality Disorder through Dialectical Behavior Therapy, Buddhism, and Online Dating, by Kiera Van Gelder

From Publishers Weekly

Discovering the enlightenment of Buddhism comes pretty late in this shaky, ultimately triumphant account of coping with an elusive mental disorder. Van Gelder had been plagued by suicidal tendencies, drug addiction, chronic instability, feelings of entrapment, and mood swings since she was a young teen growing up in Concord, Mass.. Although off drugs for more than 10 years and a veteran of therapy and hospitals, Van Gelder was only diagnosed with borderline personality disorder (BPD) when she was 30 and seesawing wildly in a relationship. Finally putting a diagnosis to her illness was "like a religious conversion," and she instantly delved into the literature and treatment, including a rigorous multistage process of dialectal behavior therapy, conducted in groups. The first half of this densely detailed memoir chronicles the authorâ„¢s continued yo-yoing into self-destructive behavior and hospitalization; eventually, with intensive BPD treatment zoning in on her six-year-old self molested by a babysitter, she moves through issues of trauma and vulnerability to a desperate need for validation from her parents, divorced early on and in deep denial about her psychic neediness. Studying Tibetan Buddhism confirmed her desire to embrace a nurturing community of compassionate seekers away from hospitals and diagnoses, well documented in this useful work. Review

"The Buddha and the Borderline is a cross between Girl, Interrupted and Bridget Jones’s Diary. While reading it, I found myself admiring Kiera’s talent for vividly describing borderline hopelessness and pain while keeping me laughing with her tales of life as a ‘lonely and increasingly horny receptionist.’ While this book has something for everyone, Kiera’s detailed account of how she recovered from this deadly disorder will be enormously inspiring to people with borderline personality disorder and their family members." —Randi Kreger, author of Stop Walking on Eggshells and The Stop Walking on Eggshells Workbook "With wit, clarity, and candor bout her sex life, Kiera chronicles her coping with the pain and emptiness of borderline personality disorder while proving that the road to recovery is usually under construction." —Jim Payne, board member of the National Alliance on Mental Illness "Kiera creates a window into the soul of one coming to grips with severe mental illness. Fully exposed, she shows us the pain, pleasure, and finally, the redemption of the borderlineexperience. Her gripping story sheds new light upon one of the most misunderstood and stigmatized of all human conditions, and for that, I am deeply grateful. Her words will quite possibly be shocking to some, but will validate and comfort those with the disorder and those who are tryingto understand them. Welcome to our world: the pain, shame, and pleasure, and then, finally, the insight and skill-building that leads to healing, love, and happiness. Kiera captures the experience brilliantly." —Tami Green, internationally recognized speaker, life coach and advocate for those in recovery from mental illness "The Buddha and the Borderline is a strikingly candid and comprehensive account of the author’s personal experiences of the effects of borderline personality disorder spanning more than two decades. Van Gelder is a very well informed, engaging, and talented writer. She reveals the multiple and complex symptoms of borderline disorder as manifested in her life with great honesty, revealing the devastating pain with moving and insightful vignettes that are tempered on occasion with a finely tuned sense of humor. This is a must-read for people with this disorder, their families and loved ones, and mental health professionals." —Robert O. Friede, MD, author of Borderline Personality Disorder Demystified "The Buddha and the Borderline is a masterpiece. Kiera shares her road to recovery in a captivating way that brings a unique understanding to a confusing, challenging, and controversial disorder. Hoffman Ph.D., president of the National Education Alliance for Borderline Personality Disorder (NEA-BPD) "Kiera’s book is destind to become a classic in the growing literature on borderline personality disorder. I expected to get a somber account of a transformation from suffering to enlightenment, but the book I read was not only entirely entertaining and revealing, but also had me up way past my bedtime in stitches. The Buddha and the Borderline is seriously funny, authentic, and sublime in its wisdom. The book embodies the Four Noble Truths of Buddhism and integrates the world of core unrelenting suffering with the world of freedom from suffering. Transcendent stuff." —Blaise Aguirre,MD, medical director of the Adolescent Dialectical Behavior Therapy Residential Program at McLean Hospital in Belmont, MA"The Buddha and the Borderline is a gripping, authentic, and ultimately inspiring portrayal of one woman’s triumph over borderline personality disorder. Kiera Van Gelder has shared the private depths of her heart and soul and, in doing so, has bestowed upon the reader a great and sacred gift." —Roy Krawitz, author of Borderline Personality Disorder: The Facts"A very educational and insightful look into the inner world of borderline personality disorder and its treatment. As one with BPD who has spent the last 8 months in therapy and has completed a 3 month DBT course I can say I actively practice dialectics with this book. I love and hate it. If there is a spectrum of this diagnosis id be on the opposite end of Kiera as my period of self harm was brief and isolated to adolescence, and I've never been hospitalized nor tried to take my own life. However this book became so relatable at times I had to walk away and practice my DBT skills to not be triggered. Other times I felt myself angry and envious of Kiera who always seemed to have her bills paid, a place to live, and whether healthy or not, a consistent boyfriend putting up with all of her issues. The part that was missing most for me in this book, (although it would be impossible to do in hindsight) was the minutia of the dissociation. It makes me want a journal of minute to minute feelings to accurately portray how varied and confusing they are. When I'm in therapy on a day where everything is peachy I have a hard time recalling my most recent (sometimes days or hours before) episode with anything more than apathy because that flight of emotion is gone and I no longer feel in the depths of an emotion mind out. Sometimes I felt her experiences were glossed over. It's one thing to say I laid in bed and cried for hours, it's another to say that minute to minute in those hours my mind went from self loathing, to self pity, to empathy and back ten times over. This book was suggested to me by my therapist and I'm glad I read it. Kiera definitely has made me feel understood and given me a camaraderie I hadn't found prior to this read.

A compelling read for anyone struggling with borderline personality disorder and I would, with much confidence, stretch this recommendation to anyone suffering. Doubtful there isn’t a human being alive that couldn’t relate to the words that pour from the pages of this incredible read, The Buddha and the Borderline. The words are filled with raw emotional honesty from the first page through to the last and it is in this integrity, this unique authenticity that it most resonated with this reader. I was drawn to this author because of the recent Thomas fire in California. I saw some of her posts on social media. I was impressed with the compassion she demonstrated to others, heartfelt kindness in light of the fact her own home burned to the ground. She lost everything: her clothes, her precious artwork, her pages of writing—incomplete books, and her furniture. But what she didn’t lose was her dignity and immense heart. I wanted to know more about her and in doing so came to a gofundme page that told her story and linked me with this book. As I sit here, after having closed the last page, I’m taken with the emotions this near stranger has elicited in me but more significantly the loss for adequate words to express how her outpouring, every bleeding exposure, left me feeling I just don’t have adequate words. The best expression I can give is to highly recommend this book. To all who want to get real with themselves, to all who dare to face their insides, and to all who dare to walk through the fires to know what it is to own your own personality, heart and soul.

My therapist recommended this book to me after diagnosing me as having BPD, and recommending DBT to me. I began reading it before starting DBT therapy, and like the other reviewers, it is comforting in some respects to read someone else's journey. It can be triggering. If cutting is your issue, you may find this book really triggering. It's not mine, but I'm squeamish, and her cutting issues definitely caused me discomfort. I think what I like best about this book is the fact that I view myself as "not in as bad of shape" as the author. It definitely made me feel less panicked about my own issues "Hey, I'm not THAT bad!" I did relate to her issues with her mother. The episode when they went into therapy together was enlightening to me. I think my mother and I are definitely two people who "cope" very differently and don't understand why the other one won't "cope" the way we do. Overall, I recommend it to anyone, but especially to women with a BPD diagnosis and/or are going through DBT.

I began reading this memoir after putting down "I Hate You, Don't Leave Me" -- I personally stopped reading it because it felt cold to me and made me feel even worse about being a Borderline. This book was exactly what I needed at the exact time I needed it. I'll refrain from telling my whole Borderline Personality Disorder story here other than this: I'm a 27-year-old wife and mother that lives a seemingly normal life on the outside, but suffers immensely with this disorder. I am just now in the process of finding healing and therapy. The Buddha and the Borderline is what honestly what pushed me to take my mental health into my hands. I listened to the audio of this book and read it as well. Now my husband is reading it to learn more about me. I don't know if you read these reviews, but if you do, thank you, Kiara.

Thoughtful mémoire on what it's like to have BPD. Wish she'd gone more into her relationship with Taylor, all the reasons she decided it wouldn't work out, and whether she now thinks it was for the best since this was the most intimate relationship described in the book, and the only deep one post-recovery. This is admittedly a self-serving wish, as I recently had to end a relationship with a woman I love but can no longer endure without her getting proper treatment. It is a little disappointing that the story ends with her still struggling more than I'd hoped, but it is honest, thorough, and very much appreciated.

There hasnt been anything that i have ever read, experienced or talked about that portrays BPD quite as realistically as this book. Never feel alone guys, Kiera has literally been thru it all like the rest of us. Her journey is fascinating and enlightening even tho she doesnt downplay a single facet of her struggle. Its the most honest personal account- of anything- that i have ever read. More than ever, i felt like i wasnt alone or weird or that i was different. Kiera gave me that, and its a rare things to have- surprisingly in such a connected world.
