Review
No cartoonist can match Richard Codor for his whimsical sense of humor and his understanding of the Jewish world. His Haggadah promises to bridge the greatest divide in the Jewish world between adults and children. --Alan M. Tigay, Executive Editor, Hadassah Magazine
What a delightful romp through the seder via this Joyous Haggadah! The multi-layered narrative and rituals in this haggadah appeal to the eye, the imagination, the funny-bone, and the occasion. Beginning with the prequel of the Joseph story, continuing until the Israelites gain their freedom, and ending with more symbolic rituals and song, the combination of telling the story and conducting the seder is presented clearly with charming and wacky humor (in both words and visuals). The cartoon-like illustrations not only enhance the story but will also add to a memorable and joy-filled shared family experience! --Peninnah Schram, storyteller and author of Jewish folktales
This brief and humorously illustrated haggadah will liven up your seder and entertain both kids and adults. --Jtnews.net

From the Inside Flap
Why is this Haggadah different from all other Haggadahs? Because it’s a clear, concise retelling of the celebration and story of Passover. Most important, it’s drawn funny. It combines the traditions and essential customs of the Passover ceremony with “chicken soup” humor. The more you throw into the soup, the tastier it is. So, snuggle down in your chair, kick off your shoes and chuckle through the fourth cup of wine and beyond. Enjoy! "What a delightful romp through the Seder via this Joyous Haggadah! I host a seder with mostly low-key Jews, including a bunch of younger children. We enjoyed this haggadah, and I even caught m 7-year-old reading it before the seder because he thought the pictures were cool. I had purchased a few and will now get a few more so we can use it for the next few years, in fact. I am however only giving it a 4-star rating because we felt a bit of the explanations were a bit curt. I am going to add a few inserts for next year after reviewing a bit more to cover what I feel is missing. And perhaps in the future we'll switch to something a bit more substantial. All in all though, it was enjoyable and I would recommend especially if you're looking to keep the seder on the short side.
Richard Codor's Joyous Haggadah is the BEST Haggadah for 1) Children 2) Inter-faith seders.Why?1) Style - Richard Codor's Joyous Haggadah is created by a cartoonist. Every year my kids start reading it as soon as the table is set. They can't even wait for company to arrive. The colors are bright and happy. The Haggadah is inviting.2) Simplicity - Great writers take big ideas and explain them simply. Richard Codor is the FIRST Haggadah author who explains the Passover story in a way that everyone at my table can understand. As a result, we all have a deeper appreciation for Passover. We had everyone participating and taking turns reading...from first graders to guests in their 80s.3) Language Balance - Too many Haggadahs miss the mark with English/Hebrew balance. This one strikes the perfect balance.4) Brevity - Richard Codor's Joyous Haggadah can be read, cover to cover, in about 1 hour. This is the PERFECT duration for a seder with children. No squirming.
Our children ages 6 - 8 really enjoyed the "Joyous Haggadah". It has great illustrations and it does a nice job of telling the story of passover story. For me this last part was most important. In the past I used a more traditional haggadah read a separate book to tell the story. The problem I have with traditional haggadah's is they spend too much time on the symbolism of the seder and not enough on the actual story of deliverance from egypt. As some reviewers have noted, it is brief. I think it took us about 30 minutes. I find the short works best to keep the children engaged for the duration of the sedar.
Incredibly charming and fairly thorough. We've been using these for years, from when my kids were 3 and 5 until now, 6 and 9. Kids love the pictures and stay engaged through the meal. We've used with non-Jewish guests, who've had an easy time following along.Def. not for people who are want everything perfect, or prefer a more serious mood.
I got these to use for a seder I hosted for some of my friends who had never been to one before. It was simple enough that it didn't take too long, and was wonderfully illustrated. Everyone commented on the lovely cartoons. Definitely not a super serious or intense haggadot, but got the job done for what I wanted!
Excellent haggadah! This haggadah has all the traditional parts of a hagaddah--all the prayers in English, Hebrew, and transliterated. It even has 2 hand washing -- which no one does. Illustrations are great, haggadah is a lot of fun. The 9 year old girl loved it and read about 40% out loud at our seder. The 6 year old boy was less engaged. Adults all enjoyed it. This will be our family haggadah. I wish it started with the candlelighting but we added that in. Also, being a feminist I wish it had an orange on the Seder plate and Miriam's vessel. Again, we added those in. Maybe they will add them in new editions - Hint , hint!
My family, which always plows in misery through the trad haggadah, loved this haggadah! And my sister asked to buy extras as gifts. This was a hit!
Tried this Haggadah this year and it was perfect. We had a range of ages at the Seder including a toddler, a teenager, one in early 20s, 3 in late 30s and 2 over 65. It was a great guide that allowed us to keep the Seder under 3 hours and keep the toddler engaged the whole time while also including enough tradition that everyone was happy! Also it shipped super fast!
