This begins as the story of a man, Charles James, who starts out from humble beginnings and ends up making millions. He has had an abusive childhood and, thankfully, seems to have spared the curse of becoming abusive in his turn. Charles, for all that he seems to have everything, has come to realize that he is really empty and has nothing of true value. The “author” of the book has traveled Route 66 looking for inspiration for his next novel. At the end of the journey, when he realizes that he has not found what he was looking and expecting to find, he comes across a dusty and dirty hiker who looks vaguely familiar. When he realizes who the hiker is (Charles), they agree that the author will possibly be given the rights to tell the hiker's story. This book is the first in those tales. As the story is told by way of a look backward through the pages of Charles' journal, it is more autobiographical than biographical in nature. This first book in a new trilogy looks far back into Charles life and shows us a young boy who learns to fight to survive. It is due to these abusive years that Charles turns his back on God and decides that he is his own god. The events described in his younger years are enough to make one weep while reading. We follow his life through the point when he realizes making money is not the same as making a joyful life. The book ends when he is given a truly undeserved chance to start again, to reboot and, hopefully, find a life of true and lasting value. While this is the first book I have read by Richard Paul Evans, it will certainly not be the last. I felt as if I knew the man the story was written about. I cheered when he overcame obstacles and felt sad and disappointed for him when he felt made unwise decisions and yielded to temptations that could destroy his life. In other words, Richard Paul Evans made this character come alive to me. I will be waiting (anxiously) for the second book in this series to be released.

I started to read the book and it didn't capture my attention so I stopped reading it But something kept drawing me back so I started reading it again. Then it happened, I got drawn in the book and then I couldn't put it down. What an amazing story after it got started. I hated to see it end. The story was such a range of emotions, from the abuse the boy had to endure, to letting greed take over his life, but the saddest part for me was when he lost the only person who loved him, treated him with respect and wanted him to be happy. It made me appreciate the life I have. Money doesn't bring happiness. The first book ended at a good place. There wasn't this huge cliff hanger but I am excited for the next book to come out next year. We may if had to wait an extra year for the book but it was, I think, meant to be. The book as it is written now is different than it would of been a year ago. This one once it got started, just flowed along and had so much emotion. A must read for many reasons. It makes you think about things, it is a realistic story and Richard Paul Evans always delivers a fantastic story.

As I read this story, I was surprised (although not disappointed) to find out that this story was not a completely fictional story. It is based loosely on the true story of a man under the alias of Charles James, with the main character telling and reflecting on his life, his rise and fall from grace.Despite Charles making some wrong turns in life as he got older, due to understanding his early life in the beginning of the story, he always remained a likeable and sympathetic character to me. There was a sort of innocence to him in the actions his took, although some can be seen as unforgiveable. But in the end, I easily connected with him and was really rooting for things to turn around for him at the end.And that’s where I will enter my only disappointment with the story. I felt like it ended in a sort of cliffhanger. In the end, Charles saw his opportunity to have a second chance at life, but as a reader, I didn’t get to discover what he made of it—what became of him. And that’s because, since this story is based on a true story, the actual Charles James was still figuring that out as the author made it clear. So I won’t knock down the story for that because despite the cliffhanger ending, as a reader, I got something valuable from it. Not only was I entertained, but I got another view on how easily life can steer one in the wrong direction, causing one to lose everything that matters, but on the positive side, how that wrong direction can open one’s eyes to what really matters. It was a good story all in all. I hope the author stays in touch with the man called Charles James and lets the readers know what became of his second chance.

Review

No cartoonist can match Richard Codor for his whimsical sense of humor and his understanding of the Jewish world. His Haggadah promises to bridge the greatest divide in the Jewish world between adults and children. --Alan M. Tigay, Executive Editor, Hadassah Magazine

What a delightful romp through the seder via this Joyous Haggadah! The multi-layered narrative and rituals in this haggadah appeal to the eye, the imagination, the funny-bone, and the occasion. Beginning with the prequel of the Joseph story, continuing until the Israelites gain their freedom, and ending with more symbolic rituals and song, the combination of telling the story and conducting the seder is presented clearly with charming and wacky humor (in both words and visuals). The cartoon-like illustrations not only enhance the story but will also add to a memorable and joy-filled shared family experience! --Peninnah Schram, storyteller and author of Jewish folktales

This brief and humorously illustrated haggadah will liven up your seder and entertain both kids and adults. --Jtnews.net

From the Inside Flap

Why is this Haggadah different from all other Haggadahs? Because it’s a clear, concise retelling of the celebration and story of Passover. Most important, it’s drawn funny. It combines the traditions and essential customs of the Passover ceremony with “chicken soup” humor. The more you throw into the soup, the tastier it is. So, snuggle down in your chair, kick off your shoes and chuckle through the fourth cup of wine and beyond. Enjoy! "What a delightful romp through the Seder via this Joyous Haggadah! I host a seder with mostly low-key Jews, including a bunch of younger children. We enjoyed this haggadah, and I even caught m 7-year-old reading it before the seder because he thought the pictures were cool. I had purchased a few and will now get a few more so we can use it for the next few years, in fact. I am however only giving it a 4-star rating because we felt a bit of the explanations were a bit curt. I am going to add a few inserts for next year after reviewing a bit more to cover what I feel is missing. And perhaps in the future we'll switch to something a bit more substantial. All in all though, it was enjoyable and I would recommend especially if you're looking to keep the seder on the short side.

Richard Codor's Joyous Haggadah is the BEST Haggadah for 1) Children 2) Inter-faith seders.Why?1) Style - Richard Codor's Joyous Haggadah is created by a cartoonist. Every year my kids start reading it as soon as the table is set. They can't even wait for company to arrive. The colors are bright and happy. The Haggadah is inviting.2) Simplicity - Great writers take big ideas and explain them simply. Richard Codor is the FIRST Haggadah author who explains the Passover story in a way that everyone at my table can understand. As a result, we all have a deeper appreciation for Passover. We had everyone participating and taking turns reading...from first graders to guests in their 80s.3) Language Balance - Too many Haggadahs miss the mark with English/Hebrew balance. This one strikes the perfect balance.4) Brevity - Richard Codor's Joyous Haggadah can be read, cover to cover, in about 1 hour. This is the PERFECT duration for a seder with children. No squirming.

Our children ages 6 - 8 really enjoyed the "Joyous Haggadah". It has great illustrations and it does a nice job of telling the story of passover story. For me this last part was most important. In the past I used a more traditional haggadah read a separate book to tell the story. The problem I have with traditional haggadah's is they spend too much time on the symbolism of the seder and not enough on the actual story of deliverance from egypt. As some reviewers have noted, it is brief. I think it took us about 30 minutes. I find the short works best to keep the children engaged for the duration of the sedar.

Incredibly charming and fairly thorough. We've been using these for years, from when my kids were 3 and 5 until now, 6 and 9. Kids love the pictures and stay engaged through the meal. We've used with non-Jewish guests, who've had an easy time following along.Def. not for people who are want everything perfect, or prefer a more serious mood.

I got these to use for a seder I hosted for some of my friends who had never been to one before. It was simple enough that it didn't take too long, and was wonderfully illustrated. Everyone commented on the lovely cartoons. Definitely not a super serious or intense haggadot, but got the job done for what I wanted!

Excellent haggadah! This haggadah has all the traditional parts of a hagaddah--all the prayers in English, Hebrew, and transliterated. It even has 2 hand washing -- which no one does. Illustrations are great, haggadah is a lot of fun. The 9 year old girl loved it and read about 40% out loud at our seder. The 6 year old boy was less engaged. Adults all enjoyed it. This will be our family haggadah. I wish it started with the candlelighting but we added that in. Also, being a feminist I wish it had an orange on the Seder plate and Miriam's vessel. Again, we added those in. Maybe they will add them in new editions - Hint , hint!

My family, which always plows in misery through the trad haggadah, loved this haggadah! And my sister asked to buy extras as gifts. This was a hit!

Tried this Haggadah this year and it was perfect. We had a range of ages at the Seder including a toddler, a teenager, one in early 20s, 3 in late 30s and 2 over 65. It was a great guide that allowed us to keep the Seder under 3 hours and keep the toddler engaged the whole time while also including enough tradition that everyone was happy! Also it shipped super fast!

Review

“A prescient and important book. . . . Fascinating.”—The New York Review of Books “Klimburg’s book is a plea for cyber-sanity, but it is also a chilling read.”—The Sunday Times (UK)   “It’s this type of worldwide cyber-chaos—the type that could down airplanes, turn off respirators and plunge millions into darkness—that Alexander Klimburg warns of in The Darkening Web. . . . Klimburg’s warnings regarding Russian cyber-aspirations. . . are on the money.”—The New Scientist“A quietly horrifying new book. . . . The Darkening Web eventually accumulates the picture of an impending apocalypse, an utterly unwinnable war in which the world’s few good guys. . . are outgunned, outspent, and outmaneuvered at every stage of what Klimburg refers to as the great cyber game.”—The Christian Science Monitor  “Readers will take much from the author’s considerable expertise, clear and explanatory prose, and breadth of discussion. . . . Klimburg adds to the growing literature of clear-eyed, authoritative authors who doubtless are shaping debate on how governments, corporations, and individuals should begin to understand the evolution of the internet and those who would use it to carry out cyberattacks.”—The Washington Free Beacon “An extraordinarily informative and accessible examination of the threats to physical infrastructure, privacy and the free flow of information posed by the struggle for control of cyberspace. Ripped from yesterday’s—and tomorrow’s—headlines, The Darkening Web shines a spotlight on a vitally important and little understood threat.”—The Tulsa World “The Darkening Web provides a sweeping yet nuanced overview of how we got to where we are online, with ample backstory… A thoughtful framework for assessing developments in this fast-moving area…Ultimately, Klimburg concludes, the battle for a free Internet ‘is nothing less than the struggle for the heart of modern democratic society.’”—Nature “Exhaustively researched. . . . A complex, fascinating book. . . . Indispensable reading for anyone keen to understand what lies ahead as cyberspace displaces conventional battlefields as the preferred venue for resolving conflict.”—The Toronto Star“A dark but riveting account of how competition between nations threatens the future of the Internet. Klimburg provides a broad overview of the technical and political underpinnings of the Internet and reveals how many of them are being eroded by short-sightedness and national pride. A must-read.”—Jeff Moss, founder of Black Hat and DEF CON conferences“A compelling and authoritative book that will shape the conversation about the intersection of the Internet and foreign policy.”—Bruce Schneier, author of Data and Goliath“At a time of rising focus on threats to the internet, Alexander Klimburg introduces much needed clarity and precision into such concepts as cyber war and information security. This book is indispensable—not only for national security officials formulating policies on cyber conflict, cyber crime and cyber governance, but for any reader seeking a strong grounding in this critically important material and what it means for our global future.”—Michael Chertoff, former U.S. Secretary of Homeland Security“Alexander Klimburg provides a chilling but well-informed and readable tour of cyber interdependence. Anyone interested in our growing global vulnerabilities should read this book.”—Joseph S. Nye, Jr., University Distinguished Service Professor at Harvard University and author of The Future of Power“Klimburg is exceedingly qualified to write about cyberspace as a new field of war. . . . The dark side of cyberspace is a daunting subject, but Klimburg’s narrative is very accessible, and frankly, this is all far too important to ignore.”—Booklist “A very frightening book. . . . Reading it is well worth the effort. Recommended for anyone interested in international affairs.”—Library Journal“An excellent primer on cyberwarfare. . . . A chilling portrait of the emergence of cyberspace as a domain for political conflict.”—Publishers Weekly“Klimburg delivers an urgent warning that civil libertarians and cybernauts alike will want to heed.” – Kirkus Reviews

I was looking for a book to provide me with a broad perspective on the internet. This book met my needs. The author has had a long and deep involvement with the international public and private entities that created and oversee the internet. As the author notes, the foundation of the internet at its creation, not too many decades ago, was trust. The engineers and technologists who built the internet trusted each other so trust is in the DNA of the internet. Obviously, trust is now in short supply; hence, the book is entitled "The Darkening Web."If you're interested in why its darkening, Alexander Klimburg will give you the reasons. The hardware, the software, telecoms providers, governance of the internet, and great power politics all play substantial roles in the difficulties inherent in maintaining and sustaining the internet. It's a wonderful resource, but preserving this resource is threatened by powerful competing interests. The author sharply criticizes the U. S. for its efforts to dominate and control the internet. The Snowden disclosures gravely damaged much of the international trust in America's oversight and use of the internet for national purposes. He also devotes major sections of the book to Russia;s and China's efforts to seize control of the internet for their national purposes. One Chinese undertaking that the author discusses, which I had not previously heard, seeks to create what amounts to a credit card score for its citizens use of the internet. Go to Chines government websites and your point score goes up; go to Chinese government disfavored websites and your score goes down, way down. Post a favorable comment about the government and your score rises; online criticism of the government gravely damages a citizen's score. It's like a rewards program. A good score will result in perks from the government; a bad score and you don't get to make that special trip to Shanghai. A diabolical approach that may prove quite effective, in my opinion. The book considers cyber power. It looks at the efforts by powers, other than great powers, to pursue effort to project power over the internet. Israel, Iran, and North Korea have all sought to do so. Some of the attraction of the cyber battlefield is the attribution problem. A given event occurs and it's not always clear what state or non-state actor to attribute the cause. The presence of criminal elements who may be allowed by foreign states, Russia and China, in particular, to pursue acts on the internet that advance national goals without the direct involvement of clearly identified national agencies further complicates the attribution problem. The author discusses terminology - whether to use the term "cybersecurity" or "data security.' He prefers "data security." Terminology affects the competing visions for the internet between the Free Internet group with the U.S. and Europe as advocates and the Sovereign Internet group led by Russia and China. I found this enlightening. Can you be secure on the internet? The answer that I came away with was a resounding "no". But I enjoyed the 370 pages of the book and, if the topic interests you, I recommend it.

Having read Griffith & Klimburg's book "The Darkening Web - The War for Cyberspace", I have the following thoughts: 1.) Given what they write about happening in the '80's, 90's and Millennium that I had no idea about, it seems clear that no matter how much I read, I have really no idea about what is actually happening right now. 2.) As we attach more things online thus becoming more imperiled and exposed, the world wide web is likely to fracture into country-centered disintegrated internets in an attempt to protect users within these discrete internets, each under a government's control. The author advocates for the existing "multi-stakeholder model", but in the end I think fear will overcome trust and the current world wide web will break up. For most of us it won't matter personally in how we use the web, but the government will be putting digital fences around what it's alright for us to see... actually (or ostensibly) for our own protection.

Excellent book. If someone really want to know about "cyber-wars" should read this book, extensively documented.

excellent read

This features the internet role in international politics, effect on democracy, internet management, origins, as DoD Arpanet, and history of founders and hackers. Massively researched, showing a breadth of knowledge, the book presents a broad overview lacking detail. It's meta data on internet management, security and protocols. It touches on the current issue of Russian intervention in the US presidential election. Policy considerations emphasize tension between offense and defense along with NSA collecting but not using information on citizens. Though denying emphasis on security, the book serves as a primer on cyberwarfare. There is informative on programs like Echelon and Prism and history of hacking and hackers as well as more altruistic developers like Jan Postel. I was surprised to learn that RSA was hacked in 2011, along with other examples. There is a good introduction to attempts at legislative control and international agreements like the Helsinki accords of 1975. After a history of origins and development of the internet, there is in-depth discussion of the major players in cyberwarfare in the United States, Russia, and China. Klimburg then gives his vision and fears for the future of cyberspace security, effect on society and as a vehicle of political and military conflict. Policy and theory gets more abstract than practical.Klimburg says that up to now pretty much anything goes. Those days may be coming to an end, as governments and corporations seek to control the internet, both to monitor the behavior of users and for state propaganda. He divides considerations into components: internet security, economic development and crime and Internet governance, resulting in three different focus areas of data security, cyberspace, and governance. He sees an overemphasis on data security at the expense of the social components. Interesting is the Orwellian social credit score, proposed by some members of the Chinese government. He contrasts American fondness for freedom of internet usage versus Russian and Chinese attempts at censorship and control. He contrasts the naive philosophy of Obama democracy spreading to the more realistic use by Vladimir Putin. US emphasis is on offensive Internet strategy, an extension of Obama administration emphasis on war on the ground at the expense of missile defense.Russian interference in the recent US election was caused in part by fears of US history of regime change and internet promotion of Arab Spring. Klimburg contends that the West doesn't understand Russian aggressive attitude on the Internet, that may be because other nations are ignorant of Russia’s own burden of cyberattacks from Ukraine, among other enemies. The West has eroded the trust that is the foundation of the free Internet by engaging in indiscriminate surveillance activities, such as some of those enacted by the NSA and disclosed in 2013 by Edward Snowden. The first cyberattack on critical infrastructure occurred in 1981/82 when the CIA tricked the KGB into stealing Western pipeline technology that had been programmed to turn malicious at a certain point. Critical infrastructure, power grids, banking data, etc. will be subject to cyber attack.Klimburg speculates on how the Internet will develop over the coming years as he asks whether it will remain “free and open” or be controlled by the state. He cites two international factions the Cyber-sovereignty bloc, led by Russia and China, versus free internet adherents in the West. The United States holds that the internet is a non-state domain, while nations like Russia, China, India, Brazil and much of the developing world are moving to restrict online freedom. The “great cyber game” may result in criminality and illegality corrupting the free internet. It's sometimes hard to separate futuristic speculation from reality. The epilogue aggrandizes the internet to a struggle for the soul of democracy. Ultimately, Klimburg concludes, the battle for a free Internet “is nothing less than the struggle for the heart of modern democratic society”. He doesn't compare internet significance to finance and war or to environment, population growth and poverty. The book needs organization diagrams as well as an acronym list and glossary.

We think of attacks by nation states as something like taking down our power grid. There are more serious issues to understand. For example creating events that lead governments to take control of the Domain Name Registries allowing complete control of what you see on the Internet and complete loss of privacy by knowing what you look at on the Internet.

I bought this book as a gift. I haven't read it. I read quite a lengthy review in the Wall Street Journal and thought of someone who would hopefully enjoy it.I'll evaluate the article in the WSJ. Since I didn't read the book. I was very impressed with it.

This is one of two books I got in an Amazon Children's Book Subscription service. The art is cute but the message of the story was distasteful to me. Basically the main character doesn't want to be a frog he wants to be any other animal, but his dad says too bad you are a frog. And then the villian comes and says it eats all the other animals but doesn't eat frogs so the main character should be happy he is a frog. So the moral of the story is you are who you are, deal with it because it could be worse?Even my three year old daughter called BS on the premise of the story. "But Poppy if the frog was an owl he could just fly away and not be eaten!". And, "Poppy you are better than the frog's daddy because you are not mean to me and will pretend with me when I want to be a aminal!"In the end we both decided we liked 'The Big Wide Mouthed Frog' better because he is proud to be a frog. In fact, 'I don't want to be a Frog' is just about the inverse of 'The Big Wide Mouthed Frog'. One is about someone who's ashamed to be himself and is only partially convinced of his worth when a villain explains he is inedible. The other is about someone who is extremely proud of himself and only finds partial humility when he finds out he's on the menu of a recent acquaintance. It chafes to have a main character in a toddler's book who doesn't like who or what he is. It chafes more for the response from an authority figure in the book is basically, 'Too Bad'. It rubbed me raw when the resolution isn't really growth or acceptance, but rather the realization that it could be worse. These are not the messages I want to give my daughter, "You are who you are, change is impossible and you should be grateful you aren't worse off.". I would rather her learn, "You are who you choose to be, change is possible with effort, and you should appreciate what you have, but not fear to try for more.PS. I didn't really like either of the books in the subscription so I cancelled it. These books are worth the price even with the discount.

I love this book! The storyline is very funny, and I’ve never seen a more perfect fusion of words and images in a picture book. Mike Boldt’s pictures make young frog’s enthusiastic energy jump off the page, and Dev Petty’s words charmingly and hilariously convey young frog’s wild imaginings of being some other “cute and warm” kind of animal in his dialogue with dad frog. The story’s dramatic pivot is when the wolf enters the picture and interrupts young frog’s reverie of freedom. The blissful ignorance of youth collides with nature red in tooth and claw. The uh-oh hold-my-breath expression Mike Boldt paints on dad frog’s face at that moment is priceless, and also dad frog’s look of exasperation mixed with parental indulgence later when it becomes clear young frog hasn’t quite grasped the message. And then there’s the bag full of “organic badgers” and the bug sandwiches and more. Kids who read and look at this book will laugh and say “eeewwwww.” Finally, one of the many lessons of the book is there are advantages to accepting and being who you are – not least, in this story, the advantage of not being an appetizing choice on the wolf’s lunch menu.

I was so lucky that this book arrived the day before our trip to Atlanta to see the grandchildren. I had purchased 3 other books for them also but this was the hit. I feel like I know it by heart after reading it everyday of our visit 3 or 4 times a day. Granddaughter is three and grandson is 6 and they both loved it. My husband was sitting in a chair across from us on the couch when I started reading and he had on his glasses. On their own they decided the daddy frogs name was "Pappy Frog" and every time it came to the page they point at Pappy and say Pappy Frog said. The illustrations were superb and they writing perfect for little ones to understand and enjoy. Most of the book my grandson could read himself but much to my pleasure they wanted Granny D to read it because I use different voices and make it even more entertaining, which didn't take a lot of effort with this book. It was the hit of out of everything we took to spoil them with. Highly recommend this book and I will be looking for more from this author. It was a hit with the adults watching the enjoyment of the grandchildren and the children stayed engaged in the story and truly loved this book. Through it all and even a couple of days ago granddaughter said "but I still want to be a pig". She loved the illustration of the pig and no matter what that was her favorite. I It was a great way to teach children about being happy with who they are and not wanting to be like everyone else. Diversity is a good thing, even though they are not ready for that word, they did get the point of the story. I hope you purchase and read to your children or grandchildren so you can experience what we did. Love, love, love "I Don't Want to Be a Frog".

I purchase hundreds of children's book each year. It has been years since I can recommend a contemporary book that stacks up against classics. This is the exception. Simplistic page text, that builds to the conclusion in a fun and silly genre, that is perfect for young children. The illustrations are perfection and the message is fortified with each page turn. "Be Happy With Who You Are"The bug sandwich had my 3 year old grandson laughing aloud. His twin sister became territorial with the book, insisting on sleeping with it on her nightstand. The next night they both chose "I don't Want to be a frog" for a repeat performance at bedtime.

Review

"Refreshing . . . The future of globalization may be determined less by a rarified battle of ideas than by something as simple as the 3D printer. Finbarr Livesey's book gives a nod to the idea that protectionist politicians are a threat to world trade, but his focus is very largely on the impersonal progress of technology . . . [He offers] detailed descriptions of individual products and processes he has gleaned through his years of consulting for international companies."—Alan Beattie, Financial Times"The great strength of Livesey’s book is to make us look more closely and intelligently at the underlying drivers of globalization. Whether more or less of it, there will surely be a different kind of globalization in the coming years. Livesey’s fine book will help us understand and anticipate the changing dynamics of global economic interdependence."—Finance & Development

I agree with the author’s insight that we’re at a potentially disruptive moment where relying on dated assumptions about globalization might underpin losing strategies. While the book is a terrific macro read for corporate planners - as I read it I mostly feared how poorly the various economic anachronisms of POTUS would fair in the regionalized/local world the author envisions (let alone the author’s highlights on the readiness of countries like Japan, South Korea, and China). I hope copies make it to Gary Cohn’s team...

Compared to the mid-1800s, there are now six times as many people, making 60 times as much stuff, with 140 times as much international trade, says Finbarr Livesey. Trade has become enormous, changing the way we live. Yet the ratio of trade to GDP has flatlined since 2011. He says we will likely see a fall of 20-30% in merchandise trade in the next decade. What does this mean?To Livesey, it means local is back. He has identified a number of factors that favor local production:-Better design is reducing the number of parts per product, speeding up assembly and making local production economical again.-3D printing will allow local production of numerous components, for much faster delivery.-Robots and artificial intelligence software are poised to eliminate jobs by the thousands, taking away the Far East’s biggest advantage - cheap labor.-Slow delivery from the Far East is becoming less and less acceptable, resulting in a trend of fabrication in and for local/regional markets. (Some 2000 Chinese-affiliated companies have opened in the USA, employing 90,000 Americans, presumably because the Chinese have seen the handwriting on the wall.)That’s the essence of From Global to Local. Unfortunately, it is not easy to pull those facts from the book. Livesey goes off on tangents and offers viewpoints that don’t prove his thesis. He spends too many pages explaining the Economic Complexity Index, the pricing of oil, the upswing in Chinese merger and acquisition activity, the upsurge of nationalism in French and American elections ….. And there are no takeaways from any of it.The return to local has implications for trade agreements, and movements like Brexit. Perhaps the UK and the USA can go it alone after all. Unfortunately, the book does not follow this path. It should have made a provocative final chapter. So what does it all mean? While globalization has moved thousands to protest, and Donald Trump to propose new tariffs, if you pay attention to Livesey’s numbers, globalization is already on the wane. It seems to be subject to a law much higher than GATT, WTO, or NAFTA. It is subject to the law of supply and demand.David Wineberg

This book will not be for everyone. It's not particularly thick at 180 pages, but it is packed with economic and political facts and observations about where we've come from and where we go from here. The author is Finbarr Livesey, senior lecturer at Cambridge. He says his book is not for or against globalization or localization. Instead, it documents history and observes the challenges ahead.Times are changing fast. Politically, in the US and elsewhere, we've seen the pendulum swing back from the rush towards "inevitable hyper-globalization," to economic nationalism. International manufacturing and trade will be subject to new criteria. The causes are partially political, but more than that, they are technological. Much of the old globalization was driven by the need for cheap labor. Now, the cost of salaries is not as critical a factor as are advances in technology. These continue to give us breakthroughs in automation including robotics, collaboration through various media driven by the internet, and the ability to "print" (manufacture) a host of new products right where you are, utilizing 3D printers."Hyper-globalization is dead," Livesey concludes, and adds a quotation from the McKinsey Global Institute: "...an entrepreneur in Nairobi, Nuremberg or Nanjing today has the ability to leverage e-commerce platforms such as Amazon or Alibaba and create a 'micro-multinational' offering products around the world, printed digitally, and delivered by drone."

The author makes some very good points about globalization being on the wane. In my 25 years experience being a software developer I've seen globalization in tech very much ebb and flow. At first it was all local, then there was a big push to outsource to overseas contractors in India and Eastern Europe, then it retracted and came back on-shore when people realized the perceived gains just weren't there and the cost of outsourcing, especially as countries joined the EU increased and then lately the big players seem to just open offices over there and make people employees instead of contracting.More in line with the subject of the book, I've definitely seen a big push especially in the touristy area I live in for lots of local items - farm to table, produce, things made by hand locally. Of course, there's the whole "freedom fries" effect - rah rah made in the USA - so much of it all is about marketing. I would definitely LOVE to see things like 3D printing make it so complex items can be made locally. Certainly the cost of transportation, carbon footprint, etc. would benefit from tech that makes it easier to make things locally. So, is it really on the wane? Or is it more of an ebb. I feel it's more the latter and it will like continue to ebb and flow, contract and expand, as technologies and attitudes change but I will definitely defer to the author's research vs. my population of 1 experience. The author's points are well thought out, researched and intelligent not reactionary or rhetoric (very refreshing!) so it's definitely worth a read and consideration of the author's perspective.
