First Grade US History: the first Americans. Warning this review contains spoilers. This book is entirely about the Paleo Indians, who were the first inhabitants of North America. I think this book is educational. There are many good facts within this book. This book does contain a few pictures. However since they are computer generated (there were no cameras back then) they didn’t capture my kid’s attention. I was even bored with the pictures. Overall it is worth the read and a good starting point in exploring the pre historic people who inhabited North America. This book starts out letting us know that the name given to them is just a classification for the first people who entered the American continents. We are told where they came from and how they got here. It is un known exactly when they first started coming over here from Asia. The book makes this fact clear by stating that they came at least 13,000 years ago, but perhaps they came much earlier. I think this is good, because it lets first graders know there are still unknowns. I wish when they introduce words like nomad, that they define it. They do describe the Paleo Indians as hunter, gathers. I like that we are told what animals they hunted. I know that this is evidenced in the fossil record. There are many good facts in this book. We learn that they used stone tools. It is great that we are told how the tools were used. They used projectile points to hunt. It would be nice to give an example of a projectile point like an arrowhead, or spear point for those who may not be familiar with the term. They discuss that they traveled in tribes carrying their belongings with them. This book tells how since they were here during the late ice age that climate changes caused them to have to move. Their food sources were changing and they moved once the implied food resources were depleted. The final page of this book gives us a great definition of Paleo. I wish this page were at the beginning of this book. It would have flowed better and made everything make more sense. I received this kindle e-book for free, (at the time of my review it is free to everyone,) in exchange for my honest review.
In dealing with “The First Americans†this one goes way back. “13,000 years ago and perhaps much earlier.†While this series is “US History†and others in this series may be a little ambiguous about what is US history and what is American history, this book doesn’t suffer from that uncertainty past the title. So, we’re not talking about “Indians†or even Native Americans in the sense that most people use that term today, but as the book puts it, “Paleo-Indians†or, I think, more accurately “Paleoamericansâ€.I do have to point out that most of this book is speculation. Most statements have or should have “perhaps†or “possibly†in them and most could use the qualifier “may haveâ€. Almost none of the statements have supporting findings or even solid background, but this is a book intended for young readers and as most books are from this publisher, intended to inspire further study. It introduces a lot of broad ideas and expects the reader to find out more on their own.The pictures in this one are uninspiring, though I concede this one could be difficult to illustrate. They are all computer models of people and landscapes. Four of them are the same model and only in one of those four is his posture different. In that one however, he meets up with a female, and from an adult perspective, it’s rather comical, though I’m not sure I would want young boys spending too much time on that page…Overall, this book will provide a basis for discussion on how Native Americans came to live in the Americas.Disclaimer: I received this ebook in exchange for my honest review.
I will give First Grade US History The First Americans 4 stars because of how much I enjoyed the format of the book. It alternated between two pages of text on a stony background to 2 pages of pictures. Oh what pictures they are.Let's talk about the text for a moment. The text was fairly appropriate for the target audience. This book was not too long so it would easily hold the attention of a first grader. Some of the vocabulary could have been better explained but if knowledgeable person is sharing this story with a 6-8 year old they would be able to explain it sufficiently. Like some of the other Baby Professor books I feel as if this book would have been made better by including graphics such as maps to help give the reader a more concrete idea of how the Paleo-Indians came to inhabit North America. Now let's get to the pictures. Wow. They are at the same time thought provoking and amusing. I can tell that a great deal of time was put into these illustrations, I'm assuming they were computer created. They range from creepy to downright amusing. I have added a few of my favorites to the photos below to give an idea of what I'm talking about. Note the ultimate fluffy softness of that mammoth. It looks like he's doing a Pantene commercial! Then there is the sexually charged cave woman chilling by the fire. I bet you know what the guy to the left is describing the length of (how they exaggerate!). Then there is the Paleo-Indian sent to the future. If nothing else get the book to enjoy the accompanying pictures.
