This book is excellent! I bought two copies of it: one for myself, and one for my Graduate students to read. This is the most complete, yet understandable treatment of a very complex and difficult topic. Rosenthal covers all aspects of mate choice, and still maintains a nice and engaging writing style. This book has the potential to become a classic in the field.In addition to reading the book myself with great interest and joy, I used it in a class teaching mate choice for undergraduate and graduate students. Each chapter was a great starting point for wonderful discussions.Disclaimer: the author is a colleague and friend of mine.

This is a masterful review presented in a readable style. The breadth of coverage of organisms is comprehensive and impressive. Read the scholarly reviews in Current Biology and Science if you want more details, but this book is well worth reading.

This book is an impressive treatment of the science of mate choice and mating preferences. The topic of mate choice, which might seem like a narrow subject at first blush, is surprisingly rich and nuanced. My lab group took this approach, and the book provided an abundance of fodder for lively discussions. One of the strengths of the book is that Dr. Rosenthal does not shy away from topics that still remain to be resolved. I think this approach works very well for this material by stimulating thought and encouraging new perspectives.In my case, I came away from Dr. Rosenthal’s book with a deeper appreciation of the importance of sensory systems (like eyes and noses) and the sensory environment in mate choice. He also covers a variety of classic topics, such as mate sampling, models for the evolution of mating preferences, selection on traits and preferences, and the genetics of traits involved in mate choice. Each of these topics spawns a multitude of new questions, most of which have not yet been resolved by modern research. The reader will come away with a host of new ideas for future research directions.Dr. Rosenthal is an excellent writer, and this book is extremely readable. The breadth of topics means that it never gets stale. Each chapter could have been the topic of its own book, so I often felt like additional details would have been nice. However, the book is already huge, and it has over a hundred pages of references, so it would have been impossible to drill deeply down into every topic.Overall, I think Mate Choice is one of three books that everyone embarking on research in sexual selection and the evolution of mating preferences should read. The other two are The Descent of Man and Selection in Relation to Sex by Charles Darwin and Sexual Selection by Malte Andersson.

I found Noah's Song to be an engaging same sex attracted YA romance. Ms Osborn explores disability (mental and physical) in youth with touching sensitivity. It is refreshing to read a YA coming out story where there are normal reactions from parents and other adults. My five star rating is based on the following: emotional investment in the story - I wanted to know what happened and felt for the main characters, good writing and editing, characters (and not just the main ones) that had depth, and sensitive exploration of themes such as disability and homosexuality. I've only recently started exploring YA MM novels and what I've found is superb writing and extraordinary stories being told. Jaclyn Osborn captured the angst, along with the sweetness of first love, masterfully.Noah and Bas are extraordinary young men and their journey together was heartbreaking and heartwarming. The courage and strength these young gay men exhibit, particularly with Bas' disability is a beautiful thing. This book made me think of all the young men fighting to be treated like everyone else in a society that still has a long way to go. It's the sort of book that should be on the curriculum of every senior school. It wouldn't hurt for all adults to read it too. This book will stay with you long after you turn the last page. Noah's Song is hopeful and sweet and everything a great book should be.Highly recommended.

As I write this, I'm sobbing. Oh, what a journey these two boys had - and oh the feelz!Noah and Bas stole my heart from the word go, and to read such a sweet, heart rending story was truly wonderful. I laughed, cried, and became angry at some of the other characters' behaviour, but most of all I was happy that two people who didn't always feel as though they fit in anywhere, fit together so perfectly.The side characters of Sam and Evan rounded out the story perfectly, and Roger and Matt, Noahs dads, actually reminded me of my dad and stepmother when I lived with them. No two people ever looked so in love, and I wanted to find what they had.Brilliantly woven tale!

I absolutely loved this book. I laughed. I cried. My heart broke in two and regenerated itself. I was enthralled by the plot and the characters. Noah struggles with his past while Bas worries about his future. Together they're perfect.Family dynamics play a huge role in the story line as does the relationship between siblings. Peer pressure proves to be a help and a hindrance while these two young men work to find a solution to all their problems and build on their growing affection. Friends are supportive and both young men grow and develop strengths needed to succeed.

Whenever I pick up a new adult/YA book, I'm always afraid that the angst is going to overbearing and the characters act like children. However, I was pleasantly surprised that this story is not like that. It is about discovering and accepting yourself with no angst. Noah and Bas are opposites yet they both have a pretty good head on their shoulders. Also, I loved the respect Noah showed his family, it's something that we sadly don't see much of in real life (at least for a short time). As the boys navigate their way through senior year, they will face the trials of acceptance, tolerance, and love.

Noah's Song is a great story, very well told. It's the story of two high school senior boys, Noah and Bas, who fall hard for each other and fight hurdles to stay together. Sounds like a story told before, and it is, but this novel is written lyrically and is a joy to read, and the character of Bas is unique. Bas suffers from a rare ear disease that is robbing him of his hearing. He must wear hearing aids and is very shy, and is teased as a result. And Noah is a horror movie nerd, so to speak, with blue hair, and has been bullied. So this isn't your typical popular closeted jock falls for shy nerd tale. And the hearing illness really adds depth to the relationship. The book is a lot of fun, with its share of drama, and I can't recommend it strongly enough. Enjoy this tale.

Such a beautiful coming of age tale.My first time reading this author, and I am seriously impressed.I found the subject matter to be well researched and accurate (I can relate since I too live with someone who has gradually lost the ability to hear).This is really a worthwhile read. Suitable for all ages. Absolutely no bad language and the one single intimate occurrence takes place off page.Sweet, clean standalone romance.Highly, highly recommended

Sweet but overly saccharine to the point of becoming nauseating. Even the characters who create conflict just do a 180 to board the sugar train out of nowhere. Gee whiz. Still, it's a cute romance in spite of not having much in terms of story beyond Bastian's controlling parents. But the sugar train has room for two more, so worry not.

Mark Glickman has published his second book and this one is every bit as good as the first. “Stolen Words” is a well researched and well written historic account with lots of background and context. The main story line, in the back drop of WW II and the Holocaust, is not common knowledge; yet, it is important for its historical significance. While academically footnoted with source information (and a great index), the book takes on a more personal style of writing keeping the reader fully engaged. You can feel the passion Glickman has for telling this story. Highly recommend.

This book is a must read. So much has been written about the Holocaust, yet Rabbi Glickman adds a whole new chapter to what we know. He beautifully explains why the written word has played such a vital role to Jewish culture and history. He provides fascinating insights into Nazi Party bureaucracy and why it was so ideologically obsessed with hoarding Jewish books and manuscripts. And he tells engaging personal stories of those who managed Jewish libraries and academies before the War, and those with the daunting task after the War to redistribute uncountable millions of books throughout the US, Europe, the USSR, Israel.

This is not an easy book to describe, but it is a very good one, and parts of it are outstanding. The writing is excellent, the research seems thorough, and as a rabbi, Glickman has a heightened understanding of the importance of books, learning and religious texts to Judaism. The photos are helpful, although the book could use more. Here's a sample of his prose, which also describes the importance of study: "Personal moments of transcendence might be moving, but what really counts is what God said to the Jewish people collectively. And what God said to the Jewish people collectively is called Torah. To study Torah, therefore, is to study a thunderous moment of divine revelation, To study Torah is to hear the voice of God."The first half of the book is the best, describing the relationship of books to Jewish culture, and it has some fascinating detail about manuscripts, early printing in Hebrew, and how printing helped the standardization of texts, which in turned helped a sense of Jewishness in the widely dispersed communities making up the world of Judaism. Among other things, there's an excellent account of the early days of Hasidism. One outstanding feature is actually fiction, a fictional account of a visit to a real Jewish library in pre-war Vilna (the Strashun Library); sections of the visit mix with the first chapter. The fictional visit will have an impact on any reader, but if the reader loves books, he or she will be drawn deeply into Glickman's book.There's enlightening historical detail, placing the narrative in a consistently difficult social environment--burning Jewish books was nothing new; Pope Julius III in 1553 ordered burning all copies of the Talmud, resulting in a large pyre in Rome of thousands of books, effectively ending what had been a vibrant Jewish printing culture in Italy. Glickman also discusses censorship of Jewish books, in which censors inked out offending sections--one imagines generations of Jewish students holding the pages up to the light, trying to read the print under the inked-out sections.The German burnings of books achieved infamy and the photos still can shock a viewer, but Glickman makes the point that Nazis collected the books, many millions of books, many times the number burned. The massive thefts and the eventual discovery and settling who should get what are the core of this book.I found several chapters to be particularly good. Chapter 1, "Loading the Jewish Bookshelf" is borderline superb. Chapter 4 features an intriguing character sketch, at some length, of Alfred Rosenberg, "...arguably history's greatest pillager of printed words." Chapter 6. "Resistance," describes just that, incidents of resistance to Nazi looters, and it has a wonderful anecdote about a Muslim Bosnian scholar named Dervis Korkut, who saved the Sarajevo Haggadah. Chapter 8, "Restitution," describes the Offenbach Archival Depot, run by Americans, that collected millions of looted books and attempted to return them, with considerable success--but with thousands of the original book collectors murdered, and the extinction of hundreds of communities, who should they be returned to? That issue was complex and the resolution could not have pleased everyone.A literary device Glickman uses unites his narrative. Early on he describes opening a package of a book he bought online, a book printed in the 1700s, one of the millions looted by the Nazis and returned, that happened to be available on the market. At the end of the book, he takes the book to a day's session of a Jewish children's summer camp. He shows them the book, not knowing quite what to expect, and finds that they are fascinated. This may not seem like so much, but it is effective, emotional and established continuity between the vanished Jewish communities and the future of Judaism.

While I love the way Hemingway writes, I hate the way he writes women. But I also enjoy a good, stiff drink. It seems Hemingway and I have more in common than I'd care to admit. Fortunately, Greene has combined all the best parts of Hemingway: a handful of excerpts from his books, plenty of stories ABOUT Hemingway, and the recipie of almost 60 drinks that Hemingway himself either favored, are mentioned in his books, or (in many cases), both.My favorites are the Jack Rose (from The Sun Also Rises) - applejack, lime and a splash of grenadine - and of course, a martini (although Hemingway apparently preferred a Gibson.) Its an entertaining read all the more so because of the connection to Papa Hemingway. The recipes are also great (although I don't think I can ever bring myself to try the concoction combining scotch, sherry and champagne.)

The airport lounge full of stranded travelers began to smell like the bull pens in Pamplona as the snow slowly buried Minneapolis in its fluffy sarcophagus. "Two more hours' delay, Ingles", said the shoe-shine boy on his fifth pass over my now-darkened natural canvas all-stars. "You had better take a walk to the bar by Gate 67 before your shoes stiffen up." I looked up from the book I had been reading. A good book. A book filled with hope, and fine stories and memories of days on fishing streams with good whisky and stories of women, some with few clothes. i walked through the corridor to the bar, to a dulled, scratched expanse of wood with filmy rings from travelers departed months ago. I put down the book, opened it, pointed to the page, and said "Remember the Maine. Can you make it? Can you make it cold, and sweet, and with the spirit of Papa looking over your shoulder as you add the absinthe?"......

Phil Greene wrote one heck of a book, starting each chapter with a recipe for a cocktail I used to hear about in my parents' time, then adding old pictures of Hemingway's gang and describing where the cocktails were referenced in Hemingway literature. He even added a comment of his own here and there. Greene is a lawyer by profession and co-founder of the American Cocktail Museum in New Orleans. But he's also a good writer. This is one of the most beautifully constructed reads I've ever experienced. I was carried to those decadent days of Hemingway's life in Key West, Paris, and parts of Italy. What fun to take the ride without the hangover. And you don't have to have read Hemingway to enjoy it, either! But if you haven't, I bet you'll start....

I was introduced to this book when it was lent to me as I prepared for my Hemingway way pilgrimage/cruise. It has some great drink recipes and links them well to Hemingway, his stories and experiences while drinking or writing about them. A good read in it's own right, but useful for experimenting too.

I enjoyed reading "To have and have another" very much. Now I am really enjoying going back and trying as many of the cocktails described in the book as possible. Now I'm reading all of Hemmingway's major works. I'm enjoying them more then my college days, especially combined with the referenced cocktails!!

If you need encouragement to drink, this may be the volume to do it with. I don't need encouragement but found this volume a welcome respite with a good drink. The relationship between the drinks as they relate to Hemingway is great and will give you a story to tell while lined up at the bar. Need a good opening line...you can comment on the origins of the drink they have in hand.

Interesting and entertaining, both from the extensive cocktail recipes and from a casual look at Ernest Hemingway. An easy read, can be picked up at any point so great for keeping one entertained while traveling.

Travel back in time, into the pages of the life and lore of Hemingway with a drink in hand: Absinthe in Paris in the 20s, Champagne with bitters and a sugar cube in Stresa, Italy; a Maestro Collins with London dry gin while fishing for marlin out on the Gulf Stream between Key West and Havana. Philip Greene, master mixologist and Hemingway aficionado combines photos, anecdotes, side-bar items about bars, books, and drinking buddies -- and the recipes of course -- in this great book that is a party unto itself. Literary types will appreciate the insights into Hemingway's stories and novels and how the drinks are woven into the tapestry of the writing; serious drinkers will enjoy the historical detail of ingedients -- the what and how people of a certain class drank almost one-hundred years ago. I have been a Christian for 40 years. My end times theology started with the "Late Great Planet Earth". From that book until know I have always been an adherent to the futurist view of Revelation. However over the years I have started to doubt some of the teaching. When nothing happened in 1988 (88 Reasons why Jesus will return in 1988), then subsequent date setting and failures, I began to wonder.Along comes Tyrant by Brian Godawa and my view of the end times is starting to change. Reading any portion of the Bible through the lens of the people at the time is a new concept for me. Books like the "Unseen Realm" Br Dr M Heiser and the Nephilim Chronicles by Brian have opened my eyes to a different world of Biblical understanding, My 20th century filters are being shed and I am beginning to see the Bible through the eyes of the people of the day.Tyrant is an excellent read. Brian interweaves Biblical fact with a fictional narrative that keeps you engaged from beginning to end. What really struck me was the level of decadence of the Roman elite. You do not get that viewpoint from just reading Scripture. Filling out the story with actual historical occurrences and facts made the book come alive. It gave me a new appreciation for what the Christians of the day had to go through to live out their faith. In the back of my mind, I knew it was a tough life, Tyrant brings their lives into vivid detail. Our brothers and sisters suffered greatly for their faith.The other strength of the book is the footnotes. All of Brian's books are heavily footnoted, Tyrant is no exception. As a student of the Word, I appreciate documented sources. It helps me verify for myself the things that are being stated.When I started this book I was a futurist. After reading the book, I sense a turn towards preterism for at least some parts of the book of Revelation. There are two more novels to come. I will withhold final judgement once I have read all three.We should all set aside our pretense and read a book like this with an open mind. Challenges to what we believe are a good thing It is about time that someone took a different view of the end times than the common Protestant view.Congratulations Mr Godawa on a job well done. I anxiously await the next two novels in this series.

In full disclosure, I was asked by Mr. Godawa to be part of a team that was given an advanced copy of the book in order to provide an unbiased review. Further, I did actually pay money for the resultant work, so everything is on the up-and-up here.It is highly likely that this book is one of Mr. Godawa's finest. You can never underestimate the power that a screenwriter can bring to what is otherwise dry, historical accounts and turn the thing into an exceptionally compelling work.However, from the get go, I would actually rate this novel at least a PG-13. Mr. Godawa confronts a number of issues in the book -- most of which are sociologically controversial -- all in an attempt to show us, the reader, that ancient Rome and surrounding areas were dealing with the same types of issues that we deal with today.Don't believe that? It's really interesting -- I'd estimate that a good third of the book is taken up with historical notes that are meticulously tied back to where they're used in each chapter. In other words, as you're reading through the book, at the moment you'd think that Mr. Godawa is making something up, he links to a historical fact.Regarding theology and eschatology, there really is nothing threatening here -- unless you're so tied down to a particular end-times interpretation that you refuse to see any other interpretations. And if that's you, I have more news for you. Any intellectually honest theologian is going to tell you that *all* such futuristic prophecies begin falling apart at some point.Why is this? Think about this: if what is fictionalized in this work -- and the previous Chronicles books -- is based on reality, and the supernatural is arguably more real than the natural, then wouldn't it make sense that if you were given the wisdom and heavenly knowledge to know how precisely how things are going to end, there would also be evil forces who would know the same? Ever think about that?God doesn't work that way. Instead, I've learned to respect that the Lord shows us what we need to know about a given situation when we need to know it, and typically only enough to make the next step forward. After all, to know too much about the definite future risks control freaks like me wanting to hurry up and speed to the conclusion while completely missing all the divine opportunities between point A and Z.There's a lot to get out of this book. It's pretty hard-hitting in issue-dealing, but that's reality. It all simply makes me look forward to Mr. Godawa's future books!

Simply stated, this is the best iPhone manual available. The introductory chapters are a reasonable read, especially for anyone new to the iPhone. The remaining chapters are pure chloroform, IF you try to read them as a novel. Just use it when in need by finding the right chapter in the excellent index.

Lovely to look at, hard to see . . . This is my third Missing Manual, and at first I was delighted to see the more compact size, slick pages, and color illustrations. Then I tried to read it, and within seconds I knew I was in trouble: the text is printed in GRAY, not black. For anyone with visual limitations, this can be a deal-breaker. How ironic that a book which devotes an entire chapter to accessibility violates basic rules of legibility by taking away much-needed contrast between the text and the white paper behind it. Missing Manuals, what were you thinking???Luckily, I discovered that I could read it, but only under a very strong, bright light.I am completely new to iPhones--or any other smartphone--and have been working with this and two other books to get up to speed. The others are iPhone for Seniors for Dummies, which is helpful for introducing the basics; and iPhone 8, 8 Plus, and iPhone X from the Teaching yourself Visually series (especially useful with everything being clearly labeled on sample screens. I'm getting useful information from all of these books. But iPhone: the Missing Manual is by far the most thorough. For example, it w "first as the only one of the three that talked about the "burst" feature of the camera--something I didn't realize I had triggered.So it's wa worthwhile purchase, but David Pogue, PLEASE use black text in the future. (Note: the Kindle version does have black text--and a serif typeface as well--but I find that format too difficult to use with a reference book.

This book is a necessity if you own an iPhone. The author and I even suggest buying earlier versions if your iPhone does not support IOS 11. Can you believe your iPhone is packed with 633 pages worth of software. Buy the book, you will never remember everything! I checked the iPhone for dummies books out of the library and they were worthless to someone new to the iPhone. A bonus is that some of the tips are also relevant for the iPod.

It is more than a book about the latest iPhone. It is also about the latest version of iOS, useful for iPad owners. Like all books by David Pogue, the writing is excellent.

I don't even need the CD! When one packs thousands of features into a handheld device it is very easy to overlook important items. This book is structured so I can go to a section and find what I need without a painful search.It has nothing to do with the book; but I would really like apps and widgets to have a basic help function!

The usual excellent run through of what the iPhone is capable of. Far superior to the User Guide put out by Apple. Do one for the latest iPads now.

This is an excellent manual of user information. Im sure dave had quality helpers grooming it. My 90 year old mother doesnt do online manuals well so she greatly appreciates this reference. Thanks Dave.

This book is a very sweet and informative story about a 2 year old with a G tube. It is perfect for parents of children with feeding tubes to read to their children. My son had a big grin on his face when we read it together. It is also informative of some of the struggles a Tubie baby faces as well as some of the care involved in protecting the Mic-key button. It also serves as a reminder that children with G tubes can still have normalcy in their lives and participate in everyday childhood activities. This book was published in a timely manner for our family. I'm so thankful we have it to share with our son!

I bought this book for my 20 month old grandson and his brothers to help them understand his upcoming Mic-Key placement and surgery. It is simple, factual and calming. It will be going to the hospital with him along with his tubey bear. The author so simply explains her son’s life that I see my grandson in the pictures from the NG tube to talking about therapists and not knowing the cause of the problem. This book is a must for families facing tube feedings.

I was just telling a coworker that I need a book about feeding tubes for my kids. This book is great. I sent it to my daughter's daycare for the teachers to read to the class. It's informative for all - teachers and students.

Bought for our son who is 2 1/2 years old and even thought it is very informative it seems Robbie written for older kids or adults but it is a great tool for explaining all about a mic key button for when he gets old and other adults

Not what I thought it was going to. My son is non ambulatory and has an AMT mini one button and this focused on a different brand. Made it hard for son and his sister to relate too. Must be great for those that can relate.

I do not have a tubie child but my work has brought them to me. This book was amazing to bring awareness and education to my two children about the variety of ways people get nutrition. Love this book and would recommend it to everyone.

This book is amazing! My son loves it. His sister does too. They read it everyday. Also I loved the efficiency. I bought it 2 days before it arrived.
