This book is a very sweet and informative story about a 2 year old with a G tube. It is perfect for parents of children with feeding tubes to read to their children. My son had a big grin on his face when we read it together. It is also informative of some of the struggles a Tubie baby faces as well as some of the care involved in protecting the Mic-key button. It also serves as a reminder that children with G tubes can still have normalcy in their lives and participate in everyday childhood activities. This book was published in a timely manner for our family. I'm so thankful we have it to share with our son!

I bought this book for my 20 month old grandson and his brothers to help them understand his upcoming Mic-Key placement and surgery. It is simple, factual and calming. It will be going to the hospital with him along with his tubey bear. The author so simply explains her son’s life that I see my grandson in the pictures from the NG tube to talking about therapists and not knowing the cause of the problem. This book is a must for families facing tube feedings.

I've had an ongoing interest in the plain people, including the Amish and Conservative/Old Order Mennonite groups for the past twenty years. During that time I've read close to two dozen books on these fascinating people. Hands down, Stephen Scott's is the authoritative overview of the various Mennonite groups, and clearly delineates the differences and similarities between then. Scott provides the reader with a brief history of each of these Mennonite groups, and notes their distinctive practices. Because of the breadth of coverage, I have Scott's book in a prominent place on my bookshelf, since I often refer to it. So, if you're looking for, say, an overview of the Weaverland Mennonites, this is the first source to consult.

I've read more than a dozen books on the Plain People, particularly the Amish and Mennonites. Stephen Scott's overview is one of the best when it comes to describing the Mennonites and showing the difference between different Mennonite groups. The book gives a brief history of each of these branches of the Mennonites as well as a description of their practices. Despite my familiarity to the subject prior to reading Scott's book I learned quite a bit that I didn't already know, including information on some of the more fascinating of these groups, such as the Weaverland Mennonites (Black Bumper Mennonites), and the Amish Mennonites, whom I first encountered on a visit to Lancaster County (PA).

Although I am an outsider, I have had a nearly two decade fascination with the Plain People in general and the Old Order Amish and Old Order and conservative Mennonite groups in particular. Not surprisingly, I have read several of the standard works on these groups and their practices. The overview by Stephen Scott is one of the best in describing the various Mennonite groups and differentiating them one from another. Combining brief histories of each of these groups with a description of their practices, Scott's book provides a more than adequate introduction to each of these groups without getting too bogged down in detail. From reading this book I learned quite a bit that I didn't know beforehand, including something about the history of the Black Bumper (Weaverland) Mennonites, a group on which I was seeking information ever since I first saw a black-painted bumper on a car in the parking lot of the farmer's market in Bird-in-Hand, PA some years ago. I was also seeking information on the Amish Mennonites, and this book helped me gain a better idea concerning their origins and practices as well.I would highly recommend this book for anyone looking for a not-too-detailed overview of these conservative and Old Order groups.

The people of this country know so little of the history of our indigenous peoples and the way White America treated them and the impact that this treatment had on these people. This book helps to bridge that knowledge gap and should be required reading for all high school American History classes.

I'm still in the process of reading this book and enjoying it very much. I have always had an interest in Native Americans and their history. Now I'm learning from this book just how mistaken some ideas are about how these people lived. Makes me sad that we as a people did such an injustice to the Native American Nation.

This book is so densely informative about the detials of daily life, and soo very good that I can only read it in small bits before bed. It strikes me how much lakota life was excactly what the christian country cowboy wants out of life today. It respects decency, honors warriors who protect the people, champions knowledge of the natural environment, family respect, a life lived honorably, passing on of tradition, etcetera. It's all the same. It just looked different. I think indigenous people all over the world had been existing as close to the experience that gives the human being all it needed. Sure we moderns don't have violence in certain places, but we have it in others. We just push our uncomfortable parts of life around, dress them up, and think we're more civilized. The suppression of the natural persona ends up creating horrible things like mental illness, murder, and rape, drug abuse, ad infinitum. The Lakota lived honestly, and they really worked out a society over millennia that we could never match.

Do not let skintone or religious belief shy you away from reading this great learning of Native peoples' lives..I had to read this last semester at Tribal College. And I was amazed at what I learned.What is inside this book contains knowledge that will help future generations if only they read it.

I study with two Native Elders and Mr. Standing Bear and his interpretation of these wisdom tales is greatly respected by First Nation people. Beautifully written and the stories themselves are still full of the riches of a plundered civilization.

This book shows the honest life lived by many thousands of American Indians prior to the destruction of their culture and take-over of their lands. Luther Standing Bear tells about family life, tribal culture, and the demoralization of their people. But he does so without apparent ill will towards the white man, rather an acceptance that would have proven very difficult for me personally. A very good read for those wanting to understand the other side of the story.

Should you ever wish to understand Indian Culture and the way of the Sioux, read this book. Very well written and downright fascinating.

I see “Breaking News” banners flashing, and an Amber Alert issued.Tiffany Jackson did everything right when she wrote MONDAY’S NOT COMING. The Quentin Tarantino-esque timeline is brilliant, especially so when I reached the end. I was caught completely offguard as I reached the last page, but what a logical conclusion the book reached. And who couldn’t fall in love with Claudia and Monday? Anyone with a best friend understands that bond, and I would be lucky to have a persistent friend like Claudia. She never gives up. It is obvious to me that Tiffany Jackson poured her heart into this book; she certainly grabbed mine.

Her sobbing family look sympathetic during press conferences. The police and maybe the FBI are involved. Friends, neighbors and strangers join search parties. This is, but should not be privilege. When that child is a black girl from the projects, the police (sometimes) assume she’s a runaway. If social services are involved with the family, she may slip through the cracks. She’s rarely headline news.4.5 STARSClaudia’s best friend Monday doesn’t show up for the first day of eighth grade and no one seems concerned. No one but Claudia. Monday’s mother says the young teen is with her father, Monday’s sister says she’s with an aunt. The school says she’s not registered. Claudia’s mother says Monday will turn up. As days turn into weeks into months Claudia is more determined to find her best friend.I wanted to fall in love with Tiffany Jackson’s sophomore effort as much as her debut ALLEGEDLY, but the layout was too confusing to follow. Chapters were labeled Before and After, and also Before Before and 2 Years Before Before so I was often confused about what time period I was reading. If Before has been before Monday disappeared it might have been a bit easier. Upon completing the book, I understood why Jackson chose ambiguity, but it took away from my enjoyment.I just loved Claudia and her complexity. Monday was her only friend, her other half, the one who gave her confidence. Suddenly alone, Claudia’s dyslexia becomes more apparent. She fears the Stupid Class. Dance is her salvation, but she feels like she doesn’t belong with the best group.MONDAY’S NOT COMING made me mad and sad and frustrated as a system too overworked and under serviced to take notice. Pointing fingers is easy. Most professionals, teachers, counselors, social workers do their best in difficult circumstances. Unfortunately, their best can fail kids like Monday.Anything more I want to say about MONDAY’S NOT COMING falls into the *spoiler* category. Jackson is a writer worth exploring. Her books have made me think and feel in areas novels don’t often touch.

This book was absolutely gut-wrenching. I honestly don't even know what to say. I read it in a single sitting, and I don't think I'm going to forget it any time soon. This book should be required reading--it touches on so much, from teen sexuality to racism to gentrification to child abuse to friendship. I honestly might have to come back and write a better review later, because this book...ahh. I can't do it justice.

Powerful, heart wrenching, tear jerking novel about teens in the DC suburbs. My heart is just breaking for Monday, Tuesday, August, April, and Claudia, and all children who are missing. I am in a funk now, missing Monday, Claudia, Michael, and all the strong and richly developed characters in this novel. I’m anxiously waiting for your next one, Ms. Jackson.

The wonky timeline and the not-so-great writing made this book hard for me to love...What exactly does One Year Before The Before or Two Years Before The Before even mean? Wouldn't it have been easier using years? It would have offered so much more clarity to the reader, that's a certainty. I honestly never quite knew where I was in the time line of the story. And without giving anything away, the "twist" at the end of the story made it even worse.I appreciate what the author was trying to do, but I don't believe she achieved her goals with this story. It's just so awkwardly written.2.5 stars

I read this compilation some years ago when I was battling cancer. I had become a nonbeliever long before, but this set of writings and essays helped me clarify my thinking on the matter. Even better, it gave me confidence to admit how I had felt about religion for years to others and gave me ammunition to debate believers more easily. I am glad that Hitch took on the task or choosing and editing this compendium. Obviously, some of the essays are better than others, but the whole is better than the sum of the parts for me.

The book is a wonderful compilation of the best atheist and non-theist literature spanning a period of over two millennia. In all this, I found the essay by Penn Jillette, beginning on p. 349, to be the most apposite as I have lived the experience he describes.To wit, p. 350. “…my imaginary friend means more to me than anything you can ever say or do.”I once had a spouse say to me that God came first, not me; that time spent with God was a higher priority in all things in place of time spent with me. I found that there was no appeal to reason or emotion that I could make, nothing that I could say or do, to overcome being put in a permanent second-rate metaphysical position to a fictional being by no less than a spouse to whom I had devoted the best years of my life. This is no less than an overturning of normal human empathy, compassion and relationship ethic for devotion to a mistaken and misguided belief in a fictional entity. If one spouse is second to God in the mind of the other spouse, the human relationship is greatly diminished. The second-rate spouse will never be able to compete with God in the mind of infected spouse. The second place is so distant as to render the lesser spouse out of sight and out of mind.This fictional entity has real power in the world of causality. It is an entity, a monster from the primitive mind, so strong as to be impervious to human reason and emotion, a malevolent, fictional yet powerful entity after all. This nicely, not for me, proves the title of Christoph Hitchens’ earlier book, ‘god is not Great, How Religion Poisons Everything’ My experience shows the height of religious arrogance where religious indoctrination replaces human relationship ethics and empathy and ruins a life. What better evidence of this can be found than in the very fact that it divides spouses?

Well written, as is everything of Christopher Hitchens, although some points may be over emphasised. This may be because I accepted the argument of a point before it was made. The book is not just for the unbeliever it is very much for the questioning believer, if such a person exists. The breadth of the references and the depth to which they are examined is amazing and very satisfying. Of course it is possible to be left in doubt on some matters but it is likely that other work by Christopher Hitchens can resolve these problems. Books by Dawkins and Harris will be excellent companions to this and the author's other publications.

What an absolute treasure trove of essential writings for those steeped in nonbelief! From Lucretius to Ibn Warraq with historical luminaries like Spinoza, Russell, Darwin, Freud, and even Lovecraft sandwiched between, this tome is definitive in it's selections, all-encompassing in it's scope, and just downright entertaining as well. The fact that Hitchens not only does the general book introduction but also the personal intros to every piece makes it all the more relevant and worthwhile. Do your questioning mind a huge favor and add it to your personal library!

I only discovered Christopher Hitchens about 1yr ago, but since that time I have been reading his works with enthusiasm. This book is not his writings of course, but a collection of writings that he finds important for non-believers. Thus, how could I turn down the advice of such a journalist.I gave the book 4 stars based purely on the fact that individuals interested in discussing such topics as religion, belief/non-belief, should, as Hitchens suggests, be somewhat versed in the more historical writings. However, from the standpoint of reading, I found this book very challenging. I have 2 advanced degress in biology/medicine, and I'm not ashamed to say that I had to read many of the passages 2 or 3x to really get an understanding of what the author was trying to say. I mention the degrees not as evidence of intelligence, only to establish that I enjoy academic pursuits.....and this book would qualify as just that! If the topic of belief/non-belief is a passion/pursuit of yours, then this book would be valuable; however, if you are looking for some light reading in the evening, this may not be the best choice.

So many different sources of information are combined in this book. I love that it begins with the types of guitars and continues with a solid and intuitive foundation. The video snippets are incredible. They allow you to begin seeing success immediately – you get to begin making music! Other books progress slowly and in a rigid fashion. As a result, you are not playing anything satisfying until near the book’s end – sometimes not even then.The music theory included is refreshing.My favorite thing about this book are the “Secrets to Guitar Success.” There are suggestions like: trying new gear and listening to music outside your comfort zone. This kind of advice is golden. So often as artists we get stuck and have no way to find inspiration or to continue to expand ourselves as musicians.Finally, at the end there is a great list for suggested listening that includes so many wonderful artists. I was so happy to see Michael Hedges’ name included!This book has rekindled my desire to play an instrument that I had long-since given up on because the instruction I had received from various books over the years left me stranded and uninspired. Now I know there is an alternative to the usual dry text that is absent any humanness or experienced advice.

This is a fantastic instructional book. I love how easy it is to follow and how the lessons progress in a manner that includes the previous lesson so you can continue to use what you previously learned. The diagrams are extremely helpful in understanding what the lesson should look like with the actual instrument. There is a little bit of something for everyone here. Wether you are just beginning or you are trying to continue developing your skills this book is for you. Having the interactive option of the video puts this instruction over the top! It is often hard to imagine what it should look like when you put the lessons from a book to use. Having the option to see it first hand is a tremendous bonus that puts this book above any other online or self teaching type of course. I would highly recommend this book to musicians of any age!!

This is utterly confusing for beginners. In Lesson 10, they teach you three major chords and you think you're getting somewhere. Then you go to the video and all it is is someone playing guitar almost wholly overwhelmed by a heavy drumbeat that makes the guitar impossible to listen to -- no instruction or explanation at all. In future lessons, they teach you THE EXACT SAME CHORDS but the strings and how you play them are completely different. Again, no explanation and all you can think is, Damn, I thought I already learned F Major! I can go on and on. They make one comment after another and you read it over and over again and it's utterly meaningless -- no explanation of what the words mean at all. I guess all the other reviews here were written by Eric Clapton: he understood it!Horrible, horrible lesson book. Two stars because some of the songs look like they'd be fun to play... if you ever learn how to. :-(

I have been using my book for awhile. It makes learing the guitar easy. And if you are interested in learning the fret board and you love to pick or want to learn to pick as I do, then this is the beginner guide. It will having you picking songs out on the frets (with much practice) in no time. I love this book

This is one of the better guitar for beginners books I have seen. The author starts with the basics but in an easy to read style while keeping the reader engaged with use of practice along the way. Other books I have read just give you 5 basic songs with a pattern to strum to with out offering any technique or explanation. This book gives you the tools to lay the groundwork to start your skills.

This book has really helped me improve my playing. I think anyone would benefit from checking it out. The lessons are super clear and educational. Thanks to Jamie for sending me to this book. I have already seen improvement in a couple days.

From an early age "Aleck" (Bell's family nickname) evinced an interest in sound and hearing, probably due to his father's profession of speech therapy and his mother's hearing loss.Aleck's childhood experiences, observations, and experiments led to his careers, first as a teacher to the deaf and then as an inventor of the telephone. Aleck was determined to speed up communication and improve on the telegraph, first developed in the 1830s. The book's accessible text focuses on his life up to and including the invention of the telephone in 1876, when he was 29. His later inventions are described in the backmatter, along with a chronologyand an author's note. The multimedia illustrations use photographic collage elements, friendly, slightly cartoony human figures, and sound effects and dialogue balloons on some pages. Photographic insets and diagrams further explain Bell's work. This expands the content of the book and makes it appealing to both children looking for the story of Bell's life and his lifelong curiosity and those more interested in scientific explanations. However, it lacks a bibliography. The front and rear endpapers are of particular note, depicting a photographic history of the telephone from 1876 to 1989 in sepia tone. The author's note describes Aleck's interest in photography and her own desire to incorporate photography in different ways in the book's design. This is an entertaining, informative, beautifully illustrated picture book. And what a great title! It's the story of a child following his curiosity, closely observing, exploring ideas, and creating. Author-illustrator, Mary Ann Fraser, reveals how Alexander Graham Bell grew up to invent the telephone in a page-turning, you-are-there way. This is a terrific gift to give to the bright, curious young people in your life. And, it certainly belongs on school shelves everywhere.

Fun, educational book! We loved the illustrations over real photos. Beautiful book for kids!

I will admit that I don't have kids, so I really don't know how kids will like this book, but I thought it was a lovely children's book and I would certainly recommend it. The illustrations are wonderful. The information in the book is interesting but kids will never know they are learning because it is fun and entertaining. I appreciated that there are parts that go more in depth for those who want to understand how things work. I would recommend this book and I think it would make a great gift for any child in the picture book years.
