Gordon Chang has lived and worked in China for almost two decades, most recently in Shanghai, as counsel to the American law firm Paul Weiss. Be aware that this book was written 20 years ago, is over priced, and everything it predicts would happen has not happened.

While I like Gordon Chang I didn't realize that it was written 15 YRs ago.Had I known that I would not have bought it.Very outdated opinion.

Good book 16 years ago. Totally out of date today. I failed to notice the copyright date.

It Is typical of those hidden Chinese communists in America! Just check the names of those who rated this book with 1 star. They are mostly Chinese. I am a Chinese American myself, but I do try to do my evaluation of books or movies with objectivity. It is sad that Amazon cannot do anything about these creeps.

Gordon Chang is an expert emeritus on China, North Korea; indeed, the entire Far East. His books are easy [for a layman] to follow, and so timely! Hope he up-dates this very very soon!

the book is written in the hard hitting style of christopher lingle but it does not work. it gets shallow, out of place, and tiresome. it tries too hard. in some places the author tries his hand at the poetic anecdotal descriptions used by harrison salisbury and edgar snow but that too falls flat probably because there is not the richness of the years of personal interviews that formed the basis of the salisbury and snow classics. we can generalize that. the book does not present sufficient supporting material in terms of data and personal interviews. in that it is, once again, somewhat superficial. the most serious failing of the book i feel is that from the first sentence onwards the author tries to browbeat the reader into accepting his thesis. he quickly loses credibility. a tiresome repetition threads thru this volume as the author raises the pitch and level of his arguments with rhetoric and hyperbole. a cool headed analysis that takes note of both the achievements and the failings of deng reforms, an analysis that is more connected to the enormous amount of academic research that has been undertaken on the subject, would have been a greater contribution to helping us outsiders with the enigma of contradictions that most of us face when carrying out china research. the author does not display a depth of understanding of the issues. for example, in chastising the arithmetic in the financial statements of state owned enterprises (which he does with great satire) he seems not to understand the basics of fund accounting which the soe's still use. the real issue is not the grasp of arithmentic by soe accountants but whether fund accounting is appropriate in a market economy. one particular point i would like to address is the contrast between capitalism and socialism with respect to income disparity. a criticism of deng reforms that it is not progessing fast enough towards capitalism and that it is creating income disparity is a contradiction. you can't have it both ways.

I am only half way through the book, but I can see that it is extremely pertinent to exactly what is going on in our country today. A lot of history of which I was not aware comparing what is happening today and what has happened in the past.

About the Author

Mike Pewtherer, founder of Woodland Ways, a company teaching wilderness survival and living skills to youth and adults, has been practicing and teaching wilderness living and survival skills for over 20 years. He is coauthor of Wilderness Survival: Living Off the Land with the Clothes on Your Back and the Knife on Your Belt and has taught in venues ranging from private high schools to conferences. Mike also teaches blacksmithing, tracking, woodwork, and ceramics. He has traveled widely and studied with native tribes in North America, Fiji, and Australia, and has acquired and practiced survival skills in military settings as a combat engineer, in Australia's Outback, and with various wilderness instructors across North America. He has also worked with the National Parks Service on the Wilderness Rescue Squad in numerous back-country settings, assisted on black bear studies, and worked as a hunter of feral hogs in the Great Smoky Mountain National Park.

The "helps" in the book are NOT long-winded, but are short and to the point.There is enough information along with the drawings to be able to try out the advice given in the book.ONE THING IS VERY IMPORTANT. DO NOT take this book out on a trip and expect to be able to do everything in it without trying it out first. [This is advice I would give with ANY book about survival.]You need to try out these suggestions and techniques first in "your back yard." In the wilderness when an emergency is upon you is NOT the time to try out something new.

Everyone has their own opinion on books like this one. Me? It taught me plenty of survival tips and techniques that I didn't know. The explanations were straight forward and easy to understand and absorb. I would hope that I never have to use most of what is in here but I sure feel more comfortable venturing into the wilderness after having read through this book and going back to specific sections that interested me. Of course, the real way to learn these techniques is to actually plan to practice a few of them each time you go backpacking, camping or maybe just on a day hike. It breaks up the monotony and when two or three of you are into doing this it's a fun way to wind down after a long (or not so long) hike.I'd recommend this book!

I purchased this as a gift for someone interested in this kind of thing; however, before gifting it I found myself flipping through it and found it very interesting. I'm not even someone who is actively a hobbyist in survivalism. Really great book with all sorts of different subjects included.

The book has its lessons. I believe that there are few complete survival books due to the broad array of topic to cover and locations. The book covers all of the basics and a lot of the harder stuff. In his book Michael Pewtherer covers a lot of information to include, natural camouflage, movement, vision, bow drill, hand drill, making your own pottery, cordage craft, cutting tools, making baskets, and the uses of a lot of the materials naturally found whether it be from plant or animal. The book is a joy to read and I have read it many times.

If you ever need to survive in the wilderness or make it through a natural or manmade emergency, here's the almost definitive guidebook. From arctic cold to jungle heat and every environment in between, you'll be thankful for these helpful survival tips should you ever need them.

You know, I've read so many news articles of people stranded in hostile environments here in the U.S. where some or all die because they were unprepared mentally and physically (equipment wise). You can't rely on 911 to get you out of every situation. This handbook is an excellent start for preparing yourself for survival. It's well written with a little light humor and personal anecdotes, well researched, and does not claim to be the one and only book you need. The author even encourages readers to read other sources and gather as much information as possible because chances are information may be the only tool available when the hammer drops and you're stuck in a survival situation. Ya just don't know. So read this book and as many others as you consider worthwhile and don't complain because it doesn't do your thinking for you. Read up, practice the skills before you need them and best of all, live to tell the tale.

I bought this book as a gift for my 12 year old son who is interested in outdoor and survival skills. It covers all the basics in a straighforward and engaging manner. The book has barely left his side since as I gave it to him.

Solid information, great diagrams, good advice. If you are a prepper or just someone who is looking to become more proficient in wilderness craft...this is a must have. Can be read and retained...or used as a reference. Good buy...

Although the price is nearly the same, there is no obvious way to access the numerous video digital content that is online because there is no "Access" code provided. Be extremely careful removing the sticker to reveal the access code -- mine tore even though I was being slow in peeling it off, and now I have to wait for Wolters Kluwer to resolve this for me. In the meantime, I cannot access material I need for class. The book itself is very practical and easy to follow, and an excellent primer.

I got this book for a single reason: to speed up my sermon preparation process. I found I was getting bogged down at several consistent places in my study: what is the passage about, what is the big idea, and why does God want the congregation to hear this? "Sermon Crunch" offered a series of questions that have helped me avoid bogging down.I got this book in the hopes reading it would cut down on time spent stuck in the sermon preparation process. It did.

This is a great book for new pastors. I really wish I had this book when I started pastoring. It is full of practical things a pastor can do to make writing sermons easier.

A quick read. Not much that is really new...but a good solid review. I already have a pretty structured system but it is always good to see other models.

Easy to get and came on time.

It is ironic, the very steps the book leads you in making and evaluating a sermon (even though excellent), could be the reason for burn-out that the book warns against. We need to heed the parable of the shower, and know that not all will get it, no matter how well refined your sermon is.

Very helpful and practical material for those who find themselves caught in the continual time crunch.

Tons of valuable tips regarding the proper use of bread machines!

I ordered an received this book from Amazon (at a bargain) in less that a week. I read it as soon as I recieved it, and loved it. The first half is all about each phase of bread making, simply explained, The second half is recipes in each of the different bread groups. It eliminates alot of the verbage and just gives you the important information. I would highly recommend it to anyone interest in learning about bread making or just looking for good basic recipes.

I got this for my daughter but I looked through it first and there were a lot of tips for me

Nice ckbk, recipes are good and easy to follow. The ones I have tried work well in my bread machine (which is not a high end model) so very pleased.

Especially enjoyed trying the seasonal recipes with Danish dough the cinnamon rolls came out great and were a hit at coffee hour and easy to make.

A very good intro to bread machine and bread making in general.Not as comprehensive as other similar bread machines bookson the market but still very good. Highly recommended.

Great book with easy recipes - and a great way to find out some of the tricks to using purchased bread mixes in a bread machine that would take years to figure out on your own!

Useful for troubleshooting if you're a newbie with a bread machine. Have referred to it a number of times, especially when making artisan bread.
