This is a very interesting book, as much for what it tells us about the conditions and pratices of American prisons in the first half of the 20th century as it does about Panzram himself. One thing worth noting, though, is that some reviews of the book mention that it includes the complete text of Panzram's autiobiography along with the editors' supplemental material. However, I don't believe that to be the case... what we get are only excerpts from what is likely a much longer autobiographical work. The web description of Panzram at the University of San Diego (where his original papers are stored) mention that only "parts of Panzram's manuscript" were used in the book. It's a shame we don't get the whole text (and USD hasn't put it online).I do think it's unfortunate that the book is subtitled "A Journal of Murder", because Panzram's actual acts of murder are only minor elements of the book. It's much more about his life, his time in prisons, and the prisons themselves.

I write about serial killers. I have to try and see through their eyes. This is a fabulous book, probably THE book that started the nurture vs nature discussions by psychologists and psychiatrists around the World. Panzram holds nothing back. You can't be squeamish and read this book. It is riveting and hard to put down. You get a brutal view of how hard and difficult life was an 1800's pioneer/settler. The saddest thing about this book for me, is that Panzram was as brilliant a writer as Jack London was.

This book is not for the faint of heart: Carl Panzram did some horrible things to a whole lot of people, so if you're easily upset, disturbed, or offended, just pass altogether. However, if you're a fan of true crime and have even a passing interest in penology, this book will change your life. Panzram is very intelligent, which is immediately obvious once you delve into his prose.His learned exposition and indictment of the prison system in America at the time is shocking and shameful, and he doesn't pull any punches when describing the horrific and barbaric torture that he and others were subjected to in multiple prisons, most notably Leavenworth. He is right when he states that we are all culpable for allowing other human beings in our own country to be treated this way by those in authority.On the lighter side, the reader is treated to the extraordinary relationship between Panzram and the prison guard (Henry Lesser) who befriended this "savage animal" and was the impetus for Panzram recording his life story. Lesser encouraged and facilitated this at great risk to himself and his job, and was solely responsible for getting the work published long after Panzram's death.

Very interesting look at the psyche and the origins of extreme violent behavior, well worth a read, some passages are powerful and unique, the book lacks a little material since Panzram wrote only a few things but they are so powerful and insightful it makes up for all the possible flaws

Man, this poor animal was totally messed up. Scary to think there are people out there that have similar attitudes toward fellow human beings, both in Panzram and those that inflicted there twisted sense of righteousness and/or depravity on him. Reading this book is like driving by a terrible car wreck that you just cannot help slowing down to gawk at. I kept reading into late hours to see what other deranged and grotesque scenarios played out in this terrible life and zest for death. Sad, horrifying, maddening, pitiful, revealing, shocking, unbelievable, twisted, grose, sickening..... abrupt.

I found this exploration of the mind of this violent murderer, both in his own writings and those of others to be fascinating. I learned much, not only of panzram and what led to his life of crime, but also of the criminal justice system of his time.

A chilling review of the past that shaped Carl Panzram into the person he was, and his outlook on how the world should be treated. This book has photos of the original letters by Panzram and several other photos of people surrounding these events. A must read for those interested in the psychology of killers.

Interesting book, but a sad story. Panzram's early life was ....no life. He was abused physically and mentally - from early childhood to the very end of his life.For someone uneducated, he had a great way of expressing his feelings through words.

excellent text for mixed methods

The text is easy to follow. It also relates smoothly to course work and research ideas,

Admittedly, I selected "Designing and Conducting Mixed Methods Research" by John W. Creswell and Vicki L. Plano Clark to learn more about this topic. Being unfamiliar with the topic and the book being a textbook, the book took me longer to get through. I think with someone who is more familiar with the topic or perhaps studying the topic or in need of using the method(s), it would be a must faster read. Slow as I was in reading it, I found it to be well organized, well explained and well presented. There were areas that did go over my head but I was surprised by how much I could understand and I credit the authors on that score. They did a good job of explaining their ideas for designing and conducting mixed methods research and it makes me curious to learn more.

For a student (or practitioner) of mixed methods, this is a thorough book that systematically builds up the concepts with appropriate case studies and citations. The authors also provide an excellent overview of the progression of MM discipline, addresses the key criticisms, and provides excellent pointers on where the discipline is headed. Clearly, intended as a text book, chapters end with suggested activities and additional references; while the primary target is academia, researchers needing to branch out to include MM designs will benefit significantly with the systematic approach. The appendices provide a variety of case studies that address all aspects of MM designs. Overall, a great book to start with MM.

This is a good overview of MM research, with a lot of details and literature references. I bought the Kindle version, and regret it. There are some tables that are not readable, and you cannot print anything. This is very frustrating and time wasting. So, a good book for a student, but buy the hard copy.

This is a book for students. It's a very thorough study. It provides all the student needs to know. I recommend it highly.

I have some other books by John Creswell and find them all for be excellent recources, and this book is no exception. This is a great overview of mixed methods research methodology, which is an often misunderstood form of research. Creswell walks through the process of designing a mixed methods study from start to finish, including why to use this methodology since it is a very principled, disciplined approach. I recommend this book as a resource for any one considering mixed methods study, as a text for a research methods class for graduate level students, or for reference for a research office.

I've picked up most of this series when they show up on the top 100 free list and this one, like the others, does not disappoint. The article on hooped row covers showed the upside and downside to their usage. I think when I construct mine I'll actually do things a little differently and make it a bit more user friendly; i.e., large enough to actually enter, like a greenhouse, so I don't have to constantly mess with the covers just to get to my vegetables. As usual, the articles are well written, thought provoking and helpful to those who might be looking to simplify their lifestyle. Highly recommended to one and all.

This was pretty neat! This is very clear and readable, and the pictures are lovely on the Kindle for PC app. (I don't think they'd show up as nicely on my e-ink Kindle, since they're color pictures, but they're not strictly necessary to appreciate the book.)I found the information helpful and I liked the idea of breaking things down into separate projects. I think a lot of people could benefit from trying the "poverty line" experiment.

Once again Anna shares her experiences and wisdom both good and bad lessons learned on country living. Her first-person view point as she works the land with her husband and they raise everything from kids to chickens is entertaining and educational. She doesn't sugar-coat her experiences.

I love it! Anna does a great job with these books. She gives excelent, practical, easy to follow adice and project ideas. Anna doesn't just tell you about the idea of a project or product, she builds and used the same thing for her to use and takes pictures and gives instructions for how you can do it too.Buy it it is worth every penny!

Admission -- I own and have read the prior edition. While I can't go line by line over the differences, this book is substantially thicker (yes, I know that thickness is a profound yardstick to compare the two editions), which indicates that a great deal of work has gone into this book.I disagree with Garner on some issues (such as defining parties in briefs), I really love the overall guidance. Keep in mind, though, that this is guidance. If you routinely appear in certain courts, you would be well served to go to a CLE at which one or more of the court's judges is speaking and try to determine his or her preferences. For instance, while my local federal appeals court has highly qualified and hard-working law clerks, the court of appeals for the state has no law clerks, which shifts certain burdens to the lawyers (e.g., if your adversary misstates the holding of an opinion, you can't assume that the court will catch it). Also, you should know whether to slavishly follow the local rules (some judges either ignore them or have their own orders which impose other requirements). Garner should have included a section dealing with these practical points.While this book is really good for younger attorneys, even old dogs like me can learn new tricks.

This book is a must. Even though it has the hideous word "tips" in the title, the book is organized and clear. Every time you turn the page you'll find another gem that will improve your writing. Some tips are global and overarching. For example, Garner at once exposes and destroys unconscious assumptions of the reader. Other tips are on a practical level like how to simplify the heading-subheading scheme so the reader understands your progression of arguments. And still other tips sound like a life coach teaching self discipline methods like clarifying what you need to know before you write. Worth the price. Keep on the shelf for long time to come.

I love this book but I was unable to get through it all because there are sooooooooo many pages. So it wasn't as useful for me because I was on a tight deadline of 2 weeks for writing a Moot Court Brief to get on to the board.But what I did read I certainly did apply, and I wrote the Best Brief for Moot Court because of this book.

Glad I bought this book, I am a nonlawyer but I still need to upgrade my writing skills every chance I get. I highly recommend this book for those of you who like to write and enjoy technical reading. I appreciate talking with attorneys over legal issues, and this is the type of book that can assist a person if your doing pro se work, and need to express your point of view in a coherent and intellectual manner. Sometimes Court administrator/judges, etc examine documents and it makes their day go a lot smoother when they can read a document or brief and clearly get the message without a lot of redundant and time-wasting lines of thought.

As a young lawyer, this is maybe the best legal writing book I've ever read. The advice is simple to follow and easy to apply. I keep this handy whenever I'm writing a brief or have a question about how to tackle a brief-related issue.Is it a little pricey? Yes. But it's worth it.

Best book I've read on legal writing ever. The only caveat I would add is that it is not as useful in law school, because real world law practice is so different than law school. Law school trains you in a particular way that ironically needs to be deprogrammed once you enter law practice in order to be a good writer and effective advocate. This book deprograms you of legalese. But if you read it while still in law school where legalese has a purpose--the purpose of making you start thinking as a lawyer--it undermines a process you need while still a student.For instance, stating issues in the "whether" format seems to be commonly expected in law school, while it is bad practice in memos and appellate briefs. This book aims to reverse many of the bad habits one acquires in law school--the legalese that served a purpose before you became a lawyer but which handicaps you for the rest of your career if you don't get deprogrammed. This book deprograms and provides new programming that makes you a better writer and advocate.

I love this book, but I am very disappointed in the Kindle edition. So be warned.I wanted a Kindle version of this terrific book because I wanted my own copy (I have borrowed a colleague's hard copy), and with my Kindle and iPad, I would always have it handy. As a way to read the book, this is great and helpful. But as a REFERENCE tool, it is nearly useless. There is no comprehensive table of contents to help you refer to past chapters to brush up on a particular topic. And the subject index--which is included--doesn't work. For example, when I look up "Mr., Ms. Mrs.," it refers to chapter 55 (which is right). But the link takes you to page 55, which is in the middle of chapter 8 and far from where you need to be. This simply isn't useful unless you are reading it only straight through.

This is one of the best legal writing books I've read. I had a settlement proposal I was working on. I decided to see if this book could give me some last minute polishing ideas. In 90 minutes the tips helped me sharpen my ideas so well that my work went from average to rockstar. I had to re read my introduction ten times because I did not believe I wrote it

I first read this when I was in 6th grade. My Dad gave me the book. Although I didn't read it on schedule like it says, I did make an attempt even back then and I really believe it made a big difference in how I interact with customers and people in general today. I've had a number of different employers over the years tell me that my customer service skills are excellent and seem ingrained in my psyche. Customer service is not something that everyone is good at, but the core skills of patience, listening, controlling emotion, laughing at ridiculous and rude customers (not in front of them obviously), are all traits that can be attributed back to what the scrolls teach and are traits that are common among people who have good customer service skills.Two scrolls in particular really have helped me over the years, Greet this day with love in your heart and If you persist you will succeed. Greeting people with love has helped me tremendously in dealing with crabby, unruly customers. When I say I love you, in my head, even though sometimes it is hard to do, it keeps me grounded and able to listen to the rants of the customer but not take them personally and also helps me to look at the situation from their side.My father used to buy this book by the case load (he literally bought over 20 cases) and hand them out to people telling them that if they read the book and follow the scrolls that their life will be changed forever. The repetition in reading the scrolls is key. I've read them so many times now that the principals just come naturally now and I find myself automatically responding to situations almost exactly like the scrolls say.Some people say that they don't work in the sales field and so the book isn't relevant. In my opinion, this book is relevant to everyone, regardless of your career. Practically every situation, work, family, friends, etc you are selling something. Whether it's selling an idea, convincing a friend, spouse or child to do something, negotiating, interviewing for a job, etc. This is a book on how to live your life in general, not just how to be a better salesman.You will not regret buying this book even if you just read it once. BUT if you can find the time and make it a habit to read the book as it instructs, your life will be changed forever.

In My Opinion this is on of the "Greatest books in the world". It succinctly organizes some of the most potent life changing principles into a small, compact package that is also fun to read. with the gloat of self help and Success books out there, this one still stands on it's own. If I were to have to pick one book to recommend for someone looking to change their life, I would recommend this one, and simply tell them to replace "Salesman" with "life".This is not a book about sales to be honest (though it's principles will help you if that is your chosen career). It's a book about how the human experience unfolds, and what you can do to impact it. As the old saying goes, "My son, pay attention to my words....keep them in the midst of your heart". There is no better way to change whats in your heart then the principles he utilizes in this book. apply those to life (or whatever your trying to achieve), and you'll do better. It's as simply as that.

What I find really interesting about this book is that its format allows you to project upon the character in the story, and follow along in the adventure as if you were Hafid, a young camel boy who aspires to the greatness of the greatest salesman in the world. I have just received this book in the mail and have reached the part about the first scroll, but so far I do find this approach very unique and I feel very involved within the task that is given to the young boy. I am really excited to experience practically the next year applying the principles within the book!I haven't cheated and read ahead, but I will try to give an update in the next several months!

This book in my opinion was bad. I would not have bought it but had to for school. If you do not need to purchase it then don't.

Great book for practicing and developing your critical thinking skills!

This is a great book to practice different situations with your friends or read on your own. It shows you different SOAP charting, nurses notes, doc orders, pt H&P. All the same info as you would find in a chart, you can learn how to read it, how you can write it yourself. Situations are general (most common) diseases you learn about in the beginning of classes. This is the exact same book one of my instructors used for us.
