This is one of two books I got in an Amazon Children's Book Subscription service.The art is cute but the message of the story was distasteful to me. Basically the main character doesn't want to be a frog he wants to be any other animal, but his dad says too bad you are a frog. And then the villian comes and says it eats all the other animals but doesn't eat frogs so the main character should be happy he is a frog. So the moral of the story is you are who you are, deal with it because it could be worse?Even my three year old daughter called BS on the premise of the story. "But Poppy if the frog was an owl he could just fly away and not be eaten!". And, "Poppy you are better than the frog's daddy because you are not mean to me and will pretend with me when I want to be a aminal!"In the end we both decided we liked 'The Big Wide Mouthed Frog' better because he is proud to be a frog. In fact, 'I don't want to be a Frog' is just about the inverse of 'The Big Wide Mouthed Frog'. One is about someone who's ashamed to be himself and is only partially convinced of his worth when a villain explains he is inedible. The other is about someone who is extremely proud of himself and only finds partial humility when he finds out he's on the menu of a recent acquaintance.It chafes to have a main character in a toddler's book who doesn't like who or what he is. It chafes more for the response from an authority figure in the book is basically, 'Too Bad'. It rubbed me raw when the resolution isn't really growth or acceptance, but rather the realization that it could be worse.These are not the messages I want to give my daughter, "You are who you are, change is impossible and you should be grateful you aren't worse off.". I would rather her learn, "You are who you choose to be, change is possible with effort, and you should appreciate what you have, but not fear to try for more.PS. I didn't really like either of the books in the subscription so I cancelled it. These books are worth the price even with the discount.

I love this book! The storyline is very funny, and I’ve never seen a more perfect fusion of words and images in a picture book. Mike Boldt’s pictures make young frog’s enthusiastic energy jump off the page, and Dev Petty’s words charmingly and hilariously convey young frog’s wild imaginings of being some other “cute and warm” kind of animal in his dialogue with dad frog. The story’s dramatic pivot is when the wolf enters the picture and interrupts young frog’s reverie of freedom. The blissful ignorance of youth collides with nature red in tooth and claw. The uh-oh hold-my-breath expression Mike Boldt paints on dad frog’s face at that moment is priceless, and also dad frog’s look of exasperation mixed with parental indulgence later when it becomes clear young frog hasn’t quite grasped the message. And then there’s the bag full of “organic badgers” and the bug sandwiches and more. Kids who read and look at this book will laugh and say “eeewwwww.” Finally, one of the many lessons of the book is there are advantages to accepting and being who you are – not least, in this story, the advantage of not being an appetizing choice on the wolf’s lunch menu.

I was so lucky that this book arrived the day before our trip to Atlanta to see the grandchildren. I had purchased 3 other books for them also but this was the hit. I feel like I know it by heart after reading it everyday of our visit 3 or 4 times a day. Granddaughter is three and grandson is 6 and they both loved it. My husband was sitting in a chair across from us on the couch when I started reading and he had on his glasses. On their own they decided the daddy frogs name was "Pappy Frog" and every time it came to the page they point at Pappy and say Pappy Frog said. The illustrations were superb and they writing perfect for little ones to understand and enjoy. Most of the book my grandson could read himself but much to my pleasure they wanted Granny D to read it because I use different voices and make it even more entertaining, which didn't take a lot of effort with this book. It was the hit of out of everything we took to spoil them with. Highly recommend this book and I will be looking for more from this author. It was a hit with the adults watching the enjoyment of the grandchildren and the children stayed engaged in the story and truly loved this book. Through it all and even a couple of days ago granddaughter said "but I still want to be a pig". She loved the illustration of the pig and no matter what that was her favorite. I It was a great way to teach children about being happy with who they are and not wanting to be like everyone else. Diversity is a good thing, even though they are not ready for that word, they did get the point of the story. I hope you purchase and read to your children or grandchildren so you can experience what we did. Love, love, love "I Don't Want to Be a Frog".

Compared to the mid-1800s, there are now six times as many people, making 60 times as much stuff, with 140 times as much international trade, says Finbarr Livesey. Trade has become enormous, changing the way we live. Yet the ratio of trade to GDP has flatlined since 2011. He says we will likely see a fall of 20-30% in merchandise trade in the next decade. What does this mean?To Livesey, it means local is back. He has identified a number of factors that favor local production:-Better design is reducing the number of parts per product, speeding up assembly and making local production economical again.-3D printing will allow local production of numerous components, for much faster delivery.-Robots and artificial intelligence software are poised to eliminate jobs by the thousands, taking away the Far East’s biggest advantage - cheap labor.-Slow delivery from the Far East is becoming less and less acceptable, resulting in a trend of fabrication in and for local/regional markets. (Some 2000 Chinese-affiliated companies have opened in the USA, employing 90,000 Americans, presumably because the Chinese have seen the handwriting on the wall.)That’s the essence of From Global to Local. He spends too many pages explaining the Economic Complexity Index, the pricing of oil, the upswing in Chinese merger and acquisition activity, the upsurge of nationalism in French and American elections ….. It's not particularly thick at 180 pages, but it is packed with economic and political facts and observations about where we've come from and where we go from here. The author is Finbarr Livesey, senior lecturer at Cambridge. He says his book is not for or against globalization or localization. Instead, it documents history and observes the challenges ahead.Times are changing fast. Politically, in the US and elsewhere, we've seen the pendulum swing back from the rush towards "inevitable hyper-globalization," to economic nationalism. International manufacturing and trade will be subject to new criteria. The causes are partially political, but more than that, they are technological. Much of the old globalization was driven by the need for cheap labor. Now, the cost of salaries is not as critical a factor as are advances in technology. These continue to give us breakthroughs in automation including robotics, collaboration through various media driven by the internet, and the ability to "print" (manufacture) a host of new products right where you are, utilizing 3D printers."Hyper-globalization is dead," Livesey concludes, and adds a quotation from the McKinsey Global Institute: "...an entrepreneur in Nairobi, Nuremberg or Nanjing today has the ability to leverage e-commerce platforms such as Amazon or Alibaba and create a 'micro-multinational' offering products around the world, printed digitally, and delivered by drone."

The author makes some very good points about globalization being on the wane. In my 25 years experience being a software developer I've seen globalization in tech very much ebb and flow. At first it was all local, then there was a big push to outsource to overseas contractors in India and Eastern Europe, then it retracted and came back on-shore when people realized the perceived gains just weren't there and the cost of outsourcing, especially as countries joined the EU increased and then lately the big players seem to just open offices over there and make people employees instead of contracting.More in line with the subject of the book, I've definitely seen a big push especially in the touristy area I live in for lots of local items - farm to table, produce, things made by hand locally. Of course, there's the whole "freedom fries" effect - rah rah made in the USA - so much of it all is about marketing. I would definitely LOVE to see things like 3D printing make it so complex items can be made locally. Certainly the cost of transportation, carbon footprint, etc. would benefit from tech that makes it easier to make things locally.So, is it really on the wane? Or is it more of an ebb. I feel it's more the latter and it will like continue to ebb and flow, contract and expand, as technologies and attitudes change but I will definitely defer to the author's research vs. my population of 1 experience. The author's points are well thought out, researched and intelligent not reactionary or rhetoric (very refreshing!) so it's definitely worth a read and consideration of the author's perspective.

Definitely not what I expected. The book is divided in three basic sections: Physical training exercises (~20%), Cooking recipes (~60%), and Meditation and visualization techniques (~ 20%).What really disappointed me is that there is nothing in the whole book related specifically to the sport of racquetball. The training exercises are quite general and can be found in any standard program to increase the physical condition. No single figure throughout the entire book!! So the authors uses wordy complicated descriptions of exercises routines that makes difficult the reading. The same applies to the nutrition information. Moreover, the list of detailed cooking recipes occupies 60% of the book, extremely boring if you are not interested in cooking food three times per day. Finally, if you are unfamiliar with general meditation techniques, the final 20% of the book could be useful as a basic introduction to the topic (this actually was my case, so this is reason why I set 3 stars).The only places where the word racquetball appear in the book is in the chapter titles. The author has published many other books with the same general information replacing the word “racquetball” by “basketball”, “baseball”, etc. The kindle edition is poorly edited, no table of contents included.In conclusion, if you are really interested in improve specific skills for racquetball this is not the book for you.

The author recounts his journeys through these countries while researching education among refuge populations. I found his journeys very interesting and his conclusions and research even more so. I hope this book is widely read so those ideas can be widely spread and inspire the right people to work toward these goals. I found it very disturbing what happened to the Jewish cemetery. This is a book well worth reading, very entertaining, and it gives one a lot to think about.

I read the book almost at once, as I really enjoyed the travelogue style of the research. The author vividly describes his experience with local people, their hospitality, troubles with local bureaucracy and security organisations.The book gives an glance to the lives of refugees in the camps, work of international aid organisations and expat communities working in them.It is written in a very easy language, therefore, those who are not involved in international development area can easily follow the book.However, the conclusions sound a little bit like an essay of a high school student - couple months of researching a topic does not make one an expert of international relations. Although I agree with authors ideas, these issues are very complex and simple recommendations 'how to make the world a better place' might not work the way they are expected.Overall, I really enjoyed the book and I congratulate the author on choosing such an interesting research for his studies and having the courage to complete it.

I've been searching high and low for a book that I can just hand to people who say flippant things about people from these cultures. Francisco manages to show the adversity faced by ordinary people, and ordinary is the operative word here. The honest discussion of the issues, the good, the bad and the ugly was extremely refereshing. Thank you, Francisco.

For all who care about the world community as a whole, (and isn't this all of us?) "Winning The Minds" is essential reading. Well written the reader is drawn into the author's whole experience. Recommend to all.

Good primary source

This book is incredible! I couldn't put it down. It's a hilarious, clever account of the author's journey. It is a great read for those who are already well-versed in the regions but also accessible to those who know nothing of the situation. Besides being a captivating narrative, the book ends in practicality by providing insightful suggestions for U.S. foreign policy. I can only hope that people in positions of power will read this book and take into consideration his remarkable perspective.

When I first picked up this book I was expecting another policy book. But the author's first hand account of events, entertaining story telling, and open mindedness makes this book a joy to read while simultaneously providing a new perspective on an issue that is saturated by mile high analsys and speculations. This on the ground account will open your eyes to some of the problems with US Foreign Policy while at the same time laughing as the author gets himself into unexpected situations.

What a fun and easy read! As someone who has never been to any of this crazy places, I didn't know what to expect when I first bought the book. But I found it so interesting! I really like the stories and adventures the author tells along his journey, especially the one about Pakistanis funding the Taliban. I sped right through it and loved every minute of it!

Mehran Kamrava is Professor and Director of the Center for International and Regional Studies at Georgetown University’s School of Foreign Service in Qatar. Originally looking for a travel guide, I bought this book a few weeks before I took off to Doha, Qatar. A travel guide it was – even though in a much different way than I had expected. This book has led me to discover one of the most fascinating places I’ve ever been to. Not only that I enjoyed walking the palm tree boulevards facing the stunning skyline of highrise buildings gleaming in the sun, the Museum of Islamic Art, or the historic downtown of Souq Waqif – this book helped me to see what is underlying: a society led by a royal autocracy that has the vision, the determination, and the means to be one of the most influential countries in the Middle East and on the world stage.The more I read, the more I got intrigued by what seems to be a massive genius masterplan being rolled out, securing rapid economic development, high modernism, regime/state survival, and power and influence projection. When you drive the busy roads of Doha, glancing at the gigantic construction sites, it is important to remember: this is just a tiny fraction of the massive force that this country is directing in multiple areas of trade, investment, security, culture, and international diplomacy. Its ambition has led Qatar to be outstanding in many fields, e.g.:- Declared cultural capital of the Arab world- The world’s largest exporter of liquified natural gas- The world’s wealthiest nation per capita- Home of global leaders in media (Al-Jazeera), education (world-class universities), aviation (Qatar Airways)- The Gulf’s first country to ever host a Football World CupBesides of discussing these very visible achievements, the book uncovers Qatar’s hidden yet extremely influential role in international relations. Protected by one of the largest US airbases, Qatar is involved in what the author calls “hyper-active diplomacy” following a strategy of hedging to build stable working relationships with countries such as Iran, Saudi Arabia, the United Arabic Emirates, the Palestinians, Israel, and France. It may be hard to overemphasize the importance of this chapter, especially after the USA recently opted out of the Iran Nuclear Deal. Qatar may well play a key role in trying to solve this crisis, being both a close ally of the United States and a neighbor of Iran with which it shares its gas field.In summary, I strongly recommend this book to anyone who is truly interested in understanding Qatar, its culture, and international relations of the Middle East. Nobody else but Mehran Kamrava may be the best person to tell this story: he is the Director of the Qatar Center for International and Regional Studies at Georgetown University, one of the world’s leading universities in International Relations. What’s more, Kamrava has researched and lived in Qatar for many years, allowing him to make very vivid descriptions, speaking from his own view. Theory, data, and evidence are presented to make his points while still written in a way that I find easy to read. Kamrava provides clear judgment, not shying away from criticism. I even found myself smiling about occasional humor between the lines. This book is very well written, argued, and supported. Mehran Kamrava does a great job of dissecting what seem, at times, like completely random foreign and domestic policies of the small Gulf state.
