American Philosophy: A Love Story

Review

One of NPR's Best Books of 2016A New York Times Editor's Choice“The further you go on in the book, and the more of Kaag’s skillful miniatures you take in, the deeper it becomes. You realize he is also making an unconventional argument for who was right, and who was wrong, in the classical tradition of American philosophy from about 1830 to 1930, in Transcendentalism and Pragmatism and Idealism and beyond. It is an argument strikingly suited to our time . . . American Philosophy succeeds, not as a textbook or survey, but a spirited lover’s quarrel with the individualism and solipsism in our national thought.” ―Mark Greif, The New York Times Book Review“John Kaag hits the sweet spot between intellectual history and personal memoir in this transcendently wonderful love song to philosophy . . . this is the most enthralling book of intellectual history I've read since David Edmonds' and John Eidinow'sWittgenstein's Poker . . . With its lucid, winning blend of autobiography, biography, and serious philosophical reflection, American Philosophy provides a magnificently accessible introduction to fundamental ideas about freedom and what makes life significant. It's an exhilarating read.” ―Heller McAlpin, NPR“[Kaag] is as an admirably approachable teacher of the figures whose works he is cataloguing. He elucidates obscure philosophical matters. His history of American philosophy is lucid and compelling.” ―Priscilla Gilman, The Boston Globe“Elegant . . . Describing these books enables Mr. Kaag to take us on a brisk tour from Hobbes and Locke to Kant and Coleridge and, most important, to rediscover the pragmatist work of American thinkers intent on mitigating the force of modern alienation.” ―Randal Fuller, The Wall Street Journal"For anyone with a love of books, intellectual history, or just a good story of romance, Kaag delivers a treat . . . Kaag draws our attention to how philosophy can attempt, in Royce's words, to mend our broken world. If philosophy should be woven into the conduct of life, as the Transcendentalists argued, then Kaag's book is an example of how that might look." ―Scott Bartlett, Philosopher's Magazine"Not since Pirsig’s Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance have I read such a mesmerizing confluence of personal experience and formal thought." ―Robert Richardson, William James Studies“In his deeper portraits, Kaag’s sketches of philosophy as lived experiences are among the book’s best achievements . . . I wanted to return to Royce and James, to find out more about Cabot, to read The Meaning of God after finishing the book. Maybe it will even do its part to slow the much feared dwindling of philosophy majors.” ―Kenyon Gradert, Open Letters Monthly“Offers a unique combination of memoir and the history of American philosophy that is a joy to read. Kaag ably presents both subjects in a way that keeps readers engaged as he shows the value of developing a personal philosophy that can help individuals find meaning, or at least some guidance, in their lives.” ―Library Journal“Philosophy not as mere academic concepts but as lived experience.” ―Booklist“A compelling hybrid combining memoir, a dramatic narrative about saving an endangered rare book collection, and the intellectual history of philosophy . . . Throughout the book, the author deftly intertwines the narrative threads in a story perfect for book lovers and soul searchers alike. Kaag's lively prose, acute self-examination, unfolding romance, and instructive history of philosophy as a discipline make for a surprisingly absorbing book.”―Kirkus Reviews (starred review)"There is a strange daylight magic in this book. It is part memoir and part flyover of American Philosophy, which, says Kaag, “from Jonathan Edwards in the eighteenth century to Cornel West in this one, is about the possibilities of rebirth and renewal.” The book is also clearly and beautifully written. I picked it up for a quick look and couldn’t put it down. Not since Pirsig’s Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance have I read such a mesmerizing confluence of personal experience and formal thought." ―Robert Richardson, author of Henry David Thoreau: The Life of A Mind"John Kaag is the closest thing we have to William James: a breathtakingly good prose stylist; philosophically and psychologically courageous, inventive and inspiring; ruthlessly honest; unsparing about the difficulties of love, intimacy and experience; and above all, human, in the most valuable and moral sense of the word."―Clancy Martin"John Kaag’s American Philosophy: A Love Story is one of the most entertaining guides to philosophical inquiry to come along in decades. Stumbling on the library of a long-forgotten Harvard professor abandoned on the great man’s country estate, John Kaag examines the trove and finds himself communing with the likes of William James, Josiah Royce, and Ralph Waldo Emerson. Ideas may be Kaag’s first love, but they bring him a flesh-and-blood Beatrice in this open-hearted account of a young man’s second chance at a sentimental education."―Megan Marshall Pulitzer Prize-winning author of Margaret Fuller: A New American Life“Is life worth living?” This is the age-old but forever timely question at the center of this remarkable and daring memoir. Part history of American philosophy, part personal narrative, American Philosophy: A Love Story, takes us deeply into that 'epic love affair with wisdom' that is philosophy, but it does so through the wonderfully intimate lens of the author himself, a young and accomplished philosopher who has summoned the nerve to expose his flaws, his failures, his deepest doubts about it all, a rare act of creative courage and generosity that leads us to where the heart of true philosophy lies: to a deep and abiding sense of wonder. This is an absolutely stellar memoir." ―Andre Dubus III

This is a terrific book, written with zest and insight. Anyone who has been delighted by Sarah Bakewell’s “How To Live” on Montaigne will find his book a worthy companion.John Kaag manages adroitly to weave much together. Yes, the book brings us in contact with some of the giants of American philosophy: Emerson, William James, Charles Peirce, and Josiah Royce. And from them we get doses of insight and wisdom aplenty. At the center of this book, however, are others. The private library of the once-famous Harvard philosopher Ernest Hocking is the setting for the story, as the author fondly works his way through the book collection and discovers, in the process, the fascinating lives of Hocking and his wife, Agnes. Making appearances in this book are such well-known figures as Robert Frost, Pearl S. Buck, and Gabriel Marcel. They, along with Hocking and other classic American philosophers, grappled with the meaning of life, with what makes a life significant. We follow Kaag as he elucidates their perspectives with careful fluency, attentive of strengths but cognizant of stumbles. He ends up trying to bridge the best of pragmatism and existentialism, a worthy endeavor. While Sartre often came up short, as Kaag notes, in the human dimension of solidarity (at least in his early work), Simone de Beauvoir faired much better, especially in her “The Ethics of Ambiguity.”One other strand needs to be noted. In this book, Kaag’s own life stands revealed, in a manner that is never cloying or disruptive. Like the philosophers with whom he spends his time, he is oftentimes a man adrift, searching, unwilling to settle for clichéd thought and existence. He is a person of parts, present but not obtrusive. We come to appreciate his journey and rejoice in its, if not final, then present path. This book will be of interest to anyone thinking about the essential problems of philosophy and life.

John Kaag's book, "American Philosophy: A Love Story" is deeply personal as well as philosophically insightful. Kaag, Professor of Philosophy at the University of Massachusetts, Lowell, writes for a broad audience and, in words he uses to describe his aim, "successfully bridges the gap between philosophical and creative writing". The book is absorbing and a pleasure to read.Kaag had earned his PhD and in 2008 was half-heartedly engaged in a post-doctoral fellowship at Harvard. His long-absent father had just died and his marriage was crumbling. Kaag felt the force of doubts about the value of life that William James had addressed at Harvard in an 1895 lecture, "Is Life Worth Living?" Through a series of accidents, Kaag finds ways to keep going. He finds himself in a large, musty library in the New Hampshire mountains on an estate that belonged to the American philosopher William Ernst Hocking (1873 -- 1966) and was still owned by his family. Hocking was well-known during his lifetime but is little studied today. He was an idealist -- a philosopher who emphasizes the spiritual, mind-dependent character of reality -- influenced heavily by his teacher at Harvard, Josiah Royce I fell in love early with Kaag's book when I found out it was about Hocking. I have read Hocking's most famous book, "The Meaning of God in Human Experience" and reviewed it here on Amazon. The Meaning of God in Human Experience: A Philosophic Study of Religion (Classic Reprint)Kaag wins the trust of the Hocking family and begins a long project cataloguing the books in the philosopher's library, including many rare first editions. He is enamored to see first editions of Descartes, Hobbes, and Kant, but the books owned by the American philosophers whom Kaag has studied, frequently with their handwritten marginalia, win his heart. In the course of his project, Kaag firms up his resolve to get a divorce. He also begins a relationship with a colleague, a philosophical student of Kant, Carol, who assists him in his cataloguing. Over time, the two philosophers fall in love and marry. As the story progresses over three-years, Kaag gradually works out his feelings of guilt, anger, and helplessness over his father and his failed marriage. He also comes to rethink the philosophers he has studied and to understand better what he finds of value in the philosophical enterprise. Kaag discusses many philosophers in the book but the focus is on the great American philosophers, Emerson, Thoreau, James Peirce, Royce, Hocking and on the French philosopher Gabriel Marcel who learned from them in many ways. Kaag states his guiding theme and what he learns from his endeavors at the outset of the book."For American philosophers like James, determining life's worth is, in a very real sense, up to us. Our wills remain the decisive factor in making meaning in a world that continually threatens it. Our past does not have to control us. The risk that life is wholly meaningless is real, but so too is the reward: the ever-present chance to be largely responsible for its worth. The appropriate response to our existential situation is not, at least for James, utter despair or suicide, but rather the repeated, ardent, yearning attempt to make good on life's tenuous possibilities. And the possibilities are out there, often in the most unlikely places."Kaag's blossoming love flows together with the lessons he derives from the American philosophers with their independence, freedom, iconoclasm, and gradually developing sense of community to offset an earlier rugged individualism. In succeeding chapters, he offers short, pointed summaries of some of the thoughts of the philosophers, combining it with reflections on their lives. Biography is an important part of philosophy. Thus, Thoreau, for example, never married, was awkward with women (he suffered a rejection from a woman who had earlier rejected his brother) and is best-known for his short, solitary stay at Walden Pond. Several chapters are named for and develop philosophical texts. Thus, "The Will to Believe" examines James' famous essay on religious faith in the light of his relationship with a young woman. "Evolutionary Love" is the title of an essay by Charles Peirce which, for Kaag, celebrates Peirce's unconventional scandal-ridden second marriage to a woman of uncertain origin and the end of his first unhappy marriage. " Philosophy of Loyalty" is the title of a book by the American idealist philosopher Josiah Royce written at the time of the death of a beloved son. And an earlier chapter "Divine Madness" alludes to Plato and his discussion of love and madness in the "Phaedrus". Kaag finds the works of these philosophers rooted in their life experiences. He sees these thinkers as celebrating the value of love and freedom, as opposed to scientific determinism and solipsistic individualism, in giving life meaning. This book movingly combines personal experience and change with reflection on what makes life valuable -- which is Kaag's understanding of the nature of philosophical thinking. I was glad to read Kaag discussing philosophers I have read and thought about. But the book may be read with pleasure by those without a background in philosophy. The book is a tribute to the power of love and of thought in the search to live a meaningful life in the face of sorrow and difficulty.Robin Friedman

Best book I've read this year. Philosophy and philosophers brought with clarity and sensitivity to life, a stunning rescue of priceless books story, a touching and the often painful memoir, a beautiful love story - and incredible, very readable and absorbing writing. All lyrically bound together. I never knew of Jane Addams - never heard of her. Now I have, and her lost place in history matters as she does. Eight pages about Jane Addams brought tears. The author takes us places to meet people who instantly evoke our involvement, even attachment. Agnes Hocking. I couldn't put this book down, and I didn't want it to end.Reviews are often personal, and this book makes it all the more true. So I'll stop writing. James, Hegel, Royce, Agnes and William Hocking, John Kaag. Thank you for the experience and the book to reread.

Women of the Blue and Gray: True Stories of Mothers, Medics, Soldiers, and Spies of the Civil War

Review

''Monson is an excellent storyteller whose research fills in the gaps regarding women and the Civil War in Women of the Blue and Gray, centering on those who rebelled against expectations. The book covers those who flouted norms to participate in the war...Monson captures these women in vivid historical scenes. The women themselves speak though quotes from their writings, speeches and letters. They are portrayed in terrifically difficult situations, bringing depth and life to the historical record. While women of both the North and the South are represented, the book takes a clear and worthwhile stance by placing the stories of women of color front and center whenever possible. For adults and teens who want to know more about the American Civil War and women's important and varied roles in it, Women of the Blue and Gray is a powerful book that paints a picture that is at turns inspiring and upsetting.'' --Foreword Reviews''Solid follow-up to Frontier Grit....the biographies zing with personality and page-turning prose....The thematic chapters cover a variety of topics, including cross-dressing women who served as soldiers, medical care, the experiences of enslaved people, and the Native American women whose home regions became war zones and whose male relatives enlisted on both sides. Entertaining and accessible book is a suitable introduction for readers beginning their foray into Civil War history.'' --Publishers Weekly''Finally! The women of the Civil War period receive some strong attention in this excellent collection of biographical sketches. Monson hails from a literary background, and her approach to this enormously overlooked history possesses a dramatic narrative appeal that reflects her novelist expertise. By covering a wide range of the female experience, from soldiers and spies to nurses, diarists, activists, and even a military strategist, Monson succeeds impressively in her mission to consider as many wartime female perspectives as possible. The diversity of her subjects is also outstanding, with profiles of Caucasian, African American, Hispanic, and Native American women. The background provided for each biographical category is also illuminating, and readers will delight in the utter absence of dull language. History-loving book clubs will find much to discuss here, and students of all ages (especially of women's history) will find it an excellent resource. Don't dismiss this as a routine resource: Women of the Blue and Gray is full of surprises.'' --Booklist

I chose the highest rating because I learned so much about what women really went through in this incredibly researched book of fact, not fiction. My thanks are extended to the author and I highly recommend this book to those who may want to feel truth and warmth from women from past generations.

This is a most scholarly book that reads like a novel. There is much new information about the role of women on both sides in the American Civil War. The material is well researched by a scholar of the subject. I highly recommend this book! Ronald Turco, MD

Women of the Blue and Gray tells the true stories of women on both sides of the Civil War who defied gender norms and were social pioneers despite the strict Victorian mores of the time. Although I had some knowledge of womens' involvement in the American Civil a la nursing and spying, Marianne Monson bought to light so many more women with incredible stories. On both sides, there were women who disguised themselves as men to fight, women who were actual doctors and worked hard to be recognized for their work, spies, nurses, and even an unofficial advisor to President Lincoln. Monson doesn't just tell the stories of white women, but also those of African American women (free and enslaved) and Native American women. It is also important to note that Monson does not glorify the women who dedicated their skills to the Confederacy, but rather presents them as women struggling against their times. Although some of their actions were admirable and what they suffered was terrible, they still fought for the Confederate side. That said, Monson suggests that all vets deserve our respect as a nation because American reunified after the conflict. Many of the women who doctored, nursed, spied, or fought carried on their own war after the Civil War was over and into Women's Suffrage. Many had to continuously advocate for themselves for their work and service to be recognized by the government in order to get a pension. Some who had served as doctors during the war were frowned upon because such a profession was still very much reserved for a man. There were a few successes, but many of these incredible women did not receive recognition until long after they'd passed on. I was particularly struck by the stories of African American Women and Native American women. Although their struggles were threefold, they still achieved amazing feats. If you're interested in the American Civil War, or even if you have a casual curiosity, Women of the Blue and Gray is a fairly short, informative, and fascinating read. Monson also writes in an easily accessible and vivid way. There is so much to learn and be inspired by.Â

In college I had a minor in history. One of the classes I took was about the Civil War. I didn't learn as much about the women of this time period as I would have liked, so I was so excited to read Women of the Blue and Gray. This book does not read like a history book, but more as a novel full of very interesting and incredible stories. Monson is a fantastic storyteller. Women were doing such amazing things during the Civil War on both sides the North and the South. Some of those things were ones I had never heard about. These women were spies, soldiers, smugglers, and rebel rousers. Some of the chapters you will find in this book are:The Beardless Brigade:Civil War SoldiersTales of Smuggling, Espionage, and General SubterfugeVoices From SlaveryDr. Mary Walker: Civil War Surgeon and ActivistAnna Ella Carroll:Military Strategist and Political AdvisorThe wonderful thing about this book is that women of many races are represented: black, white, and Native American. It shows the courage of women from all facets of life, rich or poor, slave or free and also immigrants. The stories are so inspiring and make you realize how much women truly contributed to the success, especially the North, in keeping our nation together.I highly recommend this book to historians, teachers, and those that love reading of brave historical people who changed lives others along the way. This book with it's true stories, speeches, actual letters and photographs will help you see the Civil War and it's women in a new light.

I'm glad someone has devoted a whole volume to the actions and contributions of women during the Civil War. On both sides, women fought alongside men, doctored and nursed the sick and wounded, provided an essential support network for both Union and Confederate troops, worked as spies, couriers, advisors, and generally supported their respective sides. The individual stories are compelling and inspiring, and I was especially glad to see that the author was able to include the activities of Native Americans, despite the scarcity of primary-source material. But it was depressing to learn that, despite often owing their own lives to the actions of women in combat situations, the men who were best equipped to recognize those women and reward their efforts almost uniformly fought against compensating them in even the smallest measure. A very good read.

This book documents the true untold stories of amazing women of the Civil War Era. Their lives, their passions, and their legacies tell us that we too can do more to make this world a better place. In these times of racial and political divides of ever kind, these stories of bravery and love will inspire you to listen a little deeper to your friend and to your enemy, and make place for understanding where they come from and why they believe the way they do. I will be getting this book in the hands of those I hold most dear so they too can benefit from its wisdom and insight!

The entire book was really interesting. I really enjoyed it.

Well written. Already knew most of it.

Review

"I like I Ching: The Tao of Drumming. The drum is the presence of ha-moo-low-nay, which is how the Infinite is seeing the unfolding of the deeper levels of the vast self." --Joseph Rael, author of Being and Vibration"Amazing work, given the role of music in the lives of many." --Anthony Judge, author of Periodic Pattern of Human Life"Ever since I first saw the book I Ching, The Tao of Drumming by Michael Drake, I have been fascinated by it. From the Author

"This book is the culmination of my quest to understand the power of rhythm. Rhythm, as a path, has led me to explore the drum ways of many of the world's shamanic and spiritual traditions. As I learned the rhythms of various world cultures, I found the same rhythmic qualities underlying all of them. Like the colors of the rainbow, each culture has its own hue or identity, yet each is a part of the whole. Although the focus or intent differs from culture to culture, rhythmic drumming invariably has the same power and effects in all traditions. The resonant qualities and attributes of these rhythmic phenomena are universal and come into play whenever we drum. These powerful effects and their relationship to the rhythm archetypes of the I Ching are what I attempt to describe in Part One. Part Two is my interpreatation of the 64 hexagrams from a rhythmic perspective. This book is my invitation to all who wish to experience the power of rhythm." Michael Drake

I found it informative and enlightening. I have already told a few friends about it. We are learning drumming and it helps to have background and tips. Thanks

Michael Drake truly captures "the way" of the drum and also I believe our emotional and spiritual connection to it. From the ancient ceremonial drums of early man until modern times, this "way" of the drum has not changed within us - and Michael Drake captures this in all of his books. This book actually has rhythmic exercises and pattern the reader can learn and use as a guide to finding their own "way". As a lifelong drummer, and student of related speed bag rhythms, I found it very interesting and enlightening.

Loved the first part of the book read by Bernie; his passion is so palpable, honest and interesting. Interesting background information on his life, an education on behind the curtain of politics and thoughtful alternative society options.

As a Christ-following, life-long Republican and business owner, I would likely be in the demographic of the least likely to recommend this book or to embrace any of Bernie Sanders' policies, but I found this book to be challenging at a personal level. I chose to read it because I disagreed with much of what I heard about Bernie's platform. I wanted to understand how a socialist sees the world and this book delivered exactly that. My own small business struggles with the rising costs of health insurance, my own kids struggle with the ongoing burden of student loans, even while they succeed in their careers. And I have to agree that the present trajectory of making it easier for the wealthy (individuals and corporations) to escape taxes and thereby a responsibility to society, is not right. I did not become a progressive or a socialist as a result of reading this book and have significant questions/objections to some of Bernie's answers to the problems, but I agree fully that what he raises are certainly the issues that campaigns and our government should be focused on. I read this book as some one deeply concerned about the trajectory of our nation. If you're already a progressive, you'll love this book because it provides all the ammunition you need to support your position. If, like me, you discounted Bernie during the campaign because of his platform policies, then I strongly urge you to read this book.

This book gives a great insight not only into the life and campaign of Bernie Sanders but also into the current political state of America. It could not be more relevant than at this time. So much of what Sanders describes points towards the importance of personal involvement in politics. Great lessons for the future, if we can heed them.In terms of the writing style, it is relaxed but very compelling. I intended just to read a little initially and come back to the rest later, but I found myself unable to stop reading. Highly recommended.

First, know that I am not political, never have been. Many years ago as a young person, I was a Republican because my parents and their parents were Republicans & came from Missouri to California via Illinois. As I became a young adult I switched to a Democrat because I began questioning the beliefs I grew up with. What's wrong with integration or blacks for that matter. Being a girl in the 60's I was totally against the double standard. How did that happen and when? Now being a senior and on social security and medicare, my husband and I live in fear of those benefits being cut or even eliminated. At 73 my husband still works full time because we can't afford for him not to. As prices rise greatly his paycheck does not. And at this point we just don't know what President Elect Trump will do, one can only hope! I voted for Bernie for President but I believe the DNC put an end to his being nominated. It seemed like all hope was lost. But today I received Bernie's new book and now I believe I understand more than ever what has happened. It's a wonderful and very informative, eye opening book that everyone of us 99% must read and come together to bring our country back to the 'People' and not leave it to the 1%. We must stand together and vote together. I wish Bernie had run as an independent and maybe he would have won. If he runs again we will certainly vote for him again. By the way, I'm only one seventh of the way through and my knowledge of politics has been increased one hundred fold. If you are unhappy with our government, don't complain, VOTE! I think I'll start watching C-SPAN!

If you are like me who was affected by the recent presidential election, then this is must read. I found it therapeutic.I have learned a great deal about how politics works and have newfound respect for Bernie Sanders. I feel my understanding of the political climate and the political world in the USA is now clearer and more in focus. This is coming from someone who was not a Bernie supporter. I am now.The writing style is to the point and easy to read. I highly recommend it. If this election woke you up and you want to start becoming more politically engaged, then this is a good first step.

I had this litte book in my sixth grade classroom library, but never picked it up. I liked this book because it featured information about sacagawea that I did not know. For example, I learned that she was captured and made a slave by her captors around 11 years of age. Her husband who bought her freedom was almost three times her age, and she was a brave and valuable member of the Core of Discovery. Sacagawea was a courageous role model for her people. Her short life was hard.

Informative book for the young reader. My daughter successfully delivered a speech to her 4-6 class from reading this text. A decent amount of history in a way that was easily delivered.

My 3rd grader loves the Whos is & Who was books! This is a great story about a young & brave woman. Schools don’t touch on Sacagawea and its truly a shame they don’t. Lewis & Clark wouldn’t be in our history books if it wasn’t for this brave & courageous young American Indian.

This set of books is great, they are written and illustrated so that one can easily see why a child might want to read them. Getting kids to read can be a challenge these days with all kinds of sensory detractors and distractions. But these are good solid books that tell the kids the basics on these unique historic characters.

I didn't like that Lewis shot himself to death , and I didn't know that sacagawea had a baby while she was dying .But besides Lewis killing himself it was a really good book😄, but you should get it . I gagave it four stars because I liked almost everything ,but Lewis shooting himself.

Great book easy to read and there is so much detail on her story. The kids loved it, they wouldn't put it down until they finished it. Great story of Sacagawea ❤️

My family has enjoyed any of the Who Was books. It is about a 3rd-4th grade reading level. Also for quick reading for upper elementary or middle school biography reports.

my son loves these who was books! he loves to read about real people and events! he is in fourth grade and had no problem reading this for our american Indian unit in home school. very happy with this booK!

I reviewed several methods to teach a five year old private piano lessons. This one is better for 7-9 year olds. Little kids get distracted easily and I found the pages too cluttered. I have tried Bastiens Piano Party, but I find that it can be overwhelming as well with all three books. I used Alfed's Kids Piano Course for my student because it doesn't have as much on a page. The advantage to the method I am reviewing is that the theory, ear training, and sight training are included in one book. Like I said earlier, a beginner with a longer attention span would probably do well with this method.

It served it's purpose for my nephew's Piano lessons. The instructor made us order this book we didn't have a choice.

Great startup for the younger student!

Very helpful resource for teaching group piano lessons.

You deserve 5 Stars for sure ! -- Besides the prompt arrival of my order, and the excellent condition in which it arrived, this book reminds me of the piano lesson books of my days as a piano student, quite some years ago ! -- I am pleased that there are still traditional lesson books available and good companies like yours who take a personal approach to book orders, which I appreciated very much.Thank you for everything, Sincerely,Eugenia Gregoriou-Toth

I ordered two. They arrived and are as expected, and my little piano players are hard at work, learning the songs.
