The Lord God is my strength, and he will make my feet like hinds' feet, and he will make me to walk upon mine high places. Habakkuk 3:19 Hinds' Feet on High Places is one of Hannah Hurnard's best known and best loved books: a beautiful allegory dramatizing the yearning of God's children to be led to new heights of love, joy, and victory. Follow Much-Afraid on her spiritual journey through difficult places with her two companions, Sorrow and Suffering. Learn how Much-Afraid overcomes her tormenting fears as she passes through many dangers and mounts at last to the High Places. There she gains a new name and returns to her valley of service, transformed by her union with the loving Shepherd. Included in this edition of Hinds' Feet on High Places are two special sections: Hannah Hurnard's own account of the circumstances that led her to write Hinds' Feet, and a brief autobiography of the author's life.

When my brother was struggling with his faith, a coworker gave him this simple allegorical book about Jesus as "The Good Shepherd". Hannah Hurnard writes much like CS Lewis. After my brother finished reading this book, he got down on his knees and sincerely prayed, "Good Shepherd, if You truly exist, I will give you my entire life, if only you make MY feet like "Little Miss Much-Afraid"'s and You allow me to walk on The High Places with You! I don't care what price I must pay, just allow me to walk in the heights with You, Jesus. Amen." One week later, my brother was driving home in a 35mph zone when suddenly a drunk driver hit his car, directly from behind at a speed of 82 mph, paralyzing my dear brother, Jeff, from the neck down, permanently! I'm not at all suggesting this will happen to anyone else! But in God's omniscience, He knew Jeff needed to be in what Jeff called "his cacoon of protection" from a very seriously sinful prior life! Jeff suffered for many months at first as he began to learn how to live as a quadraplegic, but he never once complained. Never! He gave thanks to God for answering his prayer in this way. Jeff went on to graduate Liberty University. Then he went out in his wheelchair-lift van to testify and preach. I know that at least one thousand souls were saved after hearing his testimony and seeing the deep, abiding JOY in his eyes and heart! He changed thousands of lives for the Kingdom of God. Jeff died 15 years later, grateful to God and well satisfied that God did enable Jeff to walk on Hinds Feet in the High Places with his beloved Good Shepherd! Just as Jesus changed Little Miss Much Afraid's crippled feet, Jesus changed Jeff's paralyzed feet into the beautiful feet of those who are allowed to walk in the High Places of God's. Perhaps you're looking for a purpose in this life. Or you may just want to read a good allegory of life in Christ Jesus. Whatever your motive, I am sure anyone of any age will enjoy this delightful classic. And this version adds pages of devotions and things to consider with each chapter. I would give this book 100 stars if I could! This book guarantees to delight!

IF, and that is a very big IF, you are in the right place, this book will speak to you on so many levels.I have read it about 5 or 6 different times in my life - in 1979 for the first time, then had my 7th and 8thgrade Sunday School students use this instead of their "assigned" books (each kid "got it" and almost never missedcoming to Sunday School!). I read it again many years later as a mommy to 5 year-old and 10 year-old girls duringLent. The 5 year old recognized her pride-fulness....that's no easy fete! She is 21 now and recently expressed her fondness for this book.If you purchase this and it does not resonate with you, may I suggest you place in on the shelf (not too far away or out of sight) and come back to it again another time? I find it helpful when I am fighting with myself and wanting my own way.....

This is a wonderful story that is told in such a way that it reminded me of "The Pilgrim's Progress", by John Bunyan. It is read by Nadia May, who brings the story even more to life. I first learned of this story written by Hannah Hurnard by reading "No Compromise: The Life Story of Keith Green" written by his wife Melody Green. I learned that this was one of Keiths' favorite stories, and now I can see why. Just like "The Pilgrim's Progress", by John Bunyan, Hannah tells a story of a Christians journey to the high place and the struggles that happen along the way. I recommend this book both to young and old, (I am 53 yrs. old) because it speaks to all of us as Christians no mater our age. That is why I gave it 5 stars and I believe you won't regret buying this book...ever.God bless,Brother Albert

A wonderful book for Christians, especially young Christians who must realize that their Christian walk can and usually will be a winding, uphill journey of sorts that is sometimes filled with unpleasant experiences, oftentimes fearful and intimidating to the natural part of us while, if worked at and conquered, has great potential for producing much spiritual growth, development and strength. For those seeking comfort in another's symbolic treatment of the trials and testings Christians must sometimes endure and overcome to reach their spiritual goal, this is a great read.

If you are just looking for a nice read you might give this 3 to 4 stars. If you are looking for your next desperate gulp of air then there are no star ratings high enough. If you are going through an extended season of adversity - this is the book for you.Currently I am in such a season and reading this book seemed as if it had be written specifically for me. The Holy Spirit used the allegorical story of Much-Afraid's journey to the High Places to be as a mirror of my own journey. This story is poignant, instructive and inspirational. It was the right book and the right time for me.I am about to read it again - slowly.

I don't normally gravitate towards fictional stories, but I was recommended this book by a dear friend. And wow, this book has totally transformed my faith! Such an amazing story of Jesus' unconditional love for us; this book puts it in a whole new perspective. As someone who has struggled with chronic fear and anxiety, I relate so much to the main character, Much-Afraid, and the thoughts and fears she has. This is one of my new favorite books, if not the best Christian book I've ever read. If you struggle with fear at all, please read this book!!

This is a very sweet book, I was reading a copy from the library of this devotional and have really enjoyed it so far, but I wanted my own copy to highlight and take notes in. This allegory and its sequel, Mountain of Spices, is really good for anyone who has experienced anxiety or that "not good enough" feeling. You have to get used to the timing of when this was written, but it's a beautiful story and a great journey... I hope this review benefits whoever is considering the devotional. Kindle version has it apart from story so it's still not hard to get into, but getting the story alone isn't a bad idea either.

This is a very interesting book, as much for what it tells us about the conditions and pratices of American prisons in the first half of the 20th century as it does about Panzram himself. One thing worth noting, though, is that some reviews of the book mention that it includes the complete text of Panzram's autiobiography along with the editors' supplemental material. However, I don't believe that to be the case... what we get are only excerpts from what is likely a much longer autobiographical work. The web description of Panzram at the University of San Diego (where his original papers are stored) mention that only "parts of Panzram's manuscript" were used in the book. It's a shame we don't get the whole text (and USD hasn't put it online).I do think it's unfortunate that the book is subtitled "A Journal of Murder", because Panzram's actual acts of murder are only minor elements of the book. It's much more about his life, his time in prisons, and the prisons themselves.

I write about serial killers. I have to try and see through their eyes. This is a fabulous book, probably THE book that started the nurture vs nature discussions by psychologists and psychiatrists around the World. Panzram holds nothing back. You can't be squeamish and read this book. It is riveting and hard to put down. You get a brutal view of how hard and difficult life was an 1800's pioneer/settler. The saddest thing about this book for me, is that Panzram was as brilliant a writer as Jack London was.

This book is not for the faint of heart: Carl Panzram did some horrible things to a whole lot of people, so if you're easily upset, disturbed, or offended, just pass altogether. However, if you're a fan of true crime and have even a passing interest in penology, this book will change your life. Panzram is very intelligent, which is immediately obvious once you delve into his prose. His learned exposition and indictment of the prison system in America at the time is shocking and shameful, and he doesn't pull any punches when describing the horrific and barbaric torture that he and others were subjected to in multiple prisons, most notably Leavenworth. He is right when he states that we are all culpable for allowing other human beings in our own country to be treated this way by those in authority. On the lighter side, the reader is treated to the extraordinary relationship between Panzram and the prison guard (Henry Lesser) who befriended this "savage animal" and was the impetus for Panzram recording his life story. Lesser encouraged and facilitated this at great risk to himself and his job, and was solely responsible for getting the work published long after Panzram's death.

Very interesting look at the psyche and the origins of extreme violent behavior, well worth a read, some passages are powerful and unique, the book lacks a little material since Panzram wrote only a few things but they are so powerful and insightful it makes up for all the possible flaws

Man, this poor animal was totally messed up. Scary to think there are people out there that have similar attitudes toward fellow human beings, both in Panzram and those that inflicted there twisted sense of righteousness and/or depravity on him. Reading this book is like driving by a terrible car wreck that you just cannot help slowing down to gawk at. I kept reading into late hours to see what other deranged and grotesque scenarios played out in this terrible life and zest for death. Sad, horrifying, maddening, pitiful, revealing, shocking, unbelievable, twisted, grose, sickening..... abrupt.

I found this exploration of the mind of this violent murderer, both in his own writings and those of others to be fascinating. I learned much, not only of panzram and what led to his life of crime, but also of the criminal justice system of his time.

A chilling review of the past that shaped Carl Panzram into the person he was, and his outlook on how the world should be treated. This book has photos of the original letters by Panzram and several other photos of people surrounding these events. A must read for those interested in the psychology of killers.

Interesting book, but a sad story. Panzram's early life was ....no life. He was abused physically and mentally - from early childhood to the very end of his life. For someone uneducated, he had a great way of expressing his feelings through words.
