Provides a critical lens and history of how the Holy Spirit has been thought about and experienced in history. In addition to this retrospective, horizontally we look to different cultures and start to recognize Eurocentric theology for what it is, and ways it is used to raise itself above others. The conclusion elevates the entire work. Our need for control is balanced by the gift of Grace, unearned comfort that centers in someone outside any of our status or decisions. The center of gravity for Grace is the Triune God whose Holy Spirit, or chi, or breath is not distant but present in every definable category we can make in reality.

I highly recommend this translation of Dante's Inferno. For many years, Ciardi's translation has been the standard and it has much to recommend it. But Ciardi's rhymed stanzas are looser, wordier, and less faithful to the original than Thornton's blank verse. Thornton brings us closer to what Dante wrote. And the excellent notes at the end of each canto help bring this masterpiece to life for a modern reader.

With decades of study and meticulous craftsmanship, Dr. Peter Thornton has offered his translation of “The Inferno.” I do not know Italian, but I have read a couple of other translations of “The Inferno,” and I found this one the best for several reasons. First, the poetry is vivid. I felt like orange flames and the stench of Sulphur were my companions as much as were Dante and Virgil. The verse itself is a second reason I liked this translation. The meter – iambic pentameter, the ordinary meter of the English language – does not intrude into the poetry itself. That is, I wasn’t conscious of stretching of words or awkward diction for the sake of the meter. You can enjoy the translation without bothering to read the footnotes, but once you start, you are off on another journey, equally absorbing – this one through contemporary (to Dante) Florentine history, Christian metaphors and allusions, Roman legend and mythology, and Catholic scholars from Augustine on.Read the translation; savor the footnotes. There’s always room for a fresh version of hell.

THANK YOU !! I've been trying to expose my kids to more of the classics. But every translation of the Divine Comedy I've come across has been so difficult that I couldn't even get through Hell (felt like hell trying to read it). UNTIL NOW !!! Thank you Mr. Douglas Neff for this translation. It keeps all the flavor, tension, and character; and stays true to the original story. Reading this translation, I find myself more absorbed and engaged in trying to understand what Dante was trying to get across, and why he picked certain persons for certain levels, and doing research into some of the people, places, vices, etc. that he talks about, instead of spending hours trying to decipher the actual language of the translation. My 7 year old is totally engaged, while at the same time, my 15 year old and I are getting into some very interesting discussions (Dante put Pope Celestine V with those souls who neither heaven nor hell want, because he resigned as Pope . . . I wonder what that means for old former pope Benedict XVI / cardinal Ratzinger who just did the same thing). And none of us are getting ground down by having to stop and try and translate the language.I cannot encourage you strongly enough to get this book. You will not be disappointed. I'm now trying to find a comparable translation of Purgatory and Paradise so we can complete the story.

Dante's THE INFERNO is a classic. Written around 1321, the book predates most of the classics, except Homer's works of course. But even before Shakespeare, this book heralded in an uncommonly twisted and almost perverse story of Dante's descent into Hell and his description of everything he sees and those he meets. It's eloquently written. Not necessarily an easy read but it does tribute to the language and reminds the reader that our vernacular has so much more color than the reductio ad absurdum we see being used today. Dante's descriptions of the nightmare that sinners endure at each level is pretty graphic, sometimes bordering on horrifying, and who knows, he might even be credited with the first narrative on the subject of flesh-eating zombies which are so popular today. The narrative also gives the reader a feel for certain historical relevancies of that and earlier times and how Dante saw the world. This particular version of the book, by John Ciardi, provides excellent descriptive notes after each section, clarifying things mentioned in the story so the reader stays on track. Lastly, I could not help but wonder if the Vatican of that time didn't encourage the book to be written simply because of its thematic message of what happens to sinners, particularly those who sin against God and the Church or become apostates. It certainly provides compelling imagery to anyone who believes in Heaven and Hell. Add it to your reading arsenal - it's worth the read.

When the school's principal refuses to let her conduct the glee club in her drag persona because of the tape trouble she can't seem to get under control, Larry offers the principal an invitation to see him perform before turning them down outright. A show and a show later, and what used to be years of bickering and complaining fast becomes the partnership Larry and Godric never saw coming.Sexy, sweet, funny, campy, and a whole lot of entertainment, this short, lighthearted story is all that was great about the Lovestrong books. Larry is so extra both as himself and as Honey Combover but every moment felt genuine. I loved that he was both learning about himself and giving in to everything that made him feel. Godric was a bit of a surprise and I liked who he ended up being. The dynamic between the two men felt right and was just what the other needed. By seeing the good in one another they were essentially freed to be their true selves and were loved for it. I can't wait to see them together in the periphery of the rest of the series. Pretty sure I'll never get enough of Honey.

Larry/Honey and his school principal boss, Godric, share a fanciful night after school conflicts regarding Larry's drag dressing wishes for a school performance. Larry invites Godric to see his show to ease Godric'sconcerns. Much is eventually revealed. Snakes, feisty cats, and unruly tape come into play for this fun read. I gotthis book through Prolific Reads and my review is totally voluntary.

Seriously, this is a hilariously funny book. I love the descriptions of Mama Honey and her python, because, well, seriously, why not? They are honestly too perfect for words. This is also such a sweet love story and a sort of enemies turned to lovers story, but I don't know that I would ever really call them enemies as much as opponents. It's great though.

If you have read the earlier books, you will remember Larry or Honey Combover and the trouble with remaining tucked. In this book, we meet Godric, the principal at the school where he worked and to prove that he can remain tucked invites him to the show. Well, it would seem that the aggravation and back and forth between these two are off the charts!

This is book 2 to the Lovestrong series. This was a amazing read. This is a short story about Honey Combover aka Larry. Omg this story was amazing you will love Larry and Godric’s story. This story was fun and exciting full of exciting things that get away and how love is for everyone. A most read can’t wait for book 3 .

I love how different Godrick and Larry are and how they balance each other. This was a beautiful, sweet read and I only wish it was longer. I hope to see Larry and Godrick in future books

Omg loved it so funny ,every time Honey spoke i would hear the raspy voice in my head, I would think of Harvey Fierstein.then you add godric and it become soooo unbelievable good and I love their size difference it's so cute

These guys on the surface look so different but they came together so sweetly. Short and sweet and looking forward to more. I wouldn’t mind seeing more of Honey

Review

“Elaine Mokhtefi’s newly published autobiographical account of her life as an engaged anti-imperialist provides an ideal occasion to reconsider the politics of ‘Third Worldist’ internationalism linking Black Power, European radicals, and anti-colonial militants during [the late sixties].” —Eugene Brennan, Los Angeles Review of Books “Mokhtefi (née Klein), a Jewish American from Long Island, has had an exhilarating life … In the nineteen-sixties, she served as a press adviser to the National Liberation Front in postwar Algiers, before going to work with Eldridge Cleaver, who was wanted in the US for his role in a deadly shoot-out with Oakland police. Half a century later, as an eighty-nine-year-old painter living on the Upper West Side, Mokhtefi still seasons her prose with the argot of revolution.” —New Yorker “A fascinating insider’s account of the Black Panthers’ exile in Algiers in the late 1960s and early 1970s. Legendary figures take to the stage in the world capital of the national liberation movements: Ahmed Ben Bella, Frantz Fanon, Eldridge Cleaver. Mokhtefi was a key intermediary between the Panthers and the FLN during her own time in Algiers, and a militant anti-imperialist. This is a clear-eyed, first-hand recollection of the way things fall apart.” —Jeremy Harding, author of Border Vigils“Extraordinary … written with great humility and with love.” —Ben Ehrenreich, Guardian Mokhtefi handles some spectacular material in brisk, modest fashion. The inevitable doubts and conflicts that arise are not agonized over…Mokhtefi focuses less on how her political allegiances developed than on telling, in lively, lucid fashion, what happened and who did what … it [seems] possible that this readiness to minimize herself on the page is related to whatever capacity allows a person, over the years, to participate in politics, navigating the compromises involved. —Lidija Haas, Harper’s “The story she tells in her book is one of intrigue, political and otherwise. It is also about a revolution trying to create a government equal to its ideals in the face of very powerful enemies. Mokhtefi writes as a believer in the revolution, but does not hesitate to critique some of the twists and turns it took over the years she was part of the government.”—Ron Jacobs, CounterPunch “A return to a time when Algiers was Mecca and the Vatican for revolutionaries. Indeed, at the time Amilcar Cabral said: ‘Muslims go on pilgrimage to Mecca, Christians in the Vatican and national liberation movements in Algiers.’” —Kader Bakou, Le Soir d'Algerie“The behind-the-scenes work of post-WWII liberation movements comes to the fore in this gripping memoir from Mokhtefi … she makes palpable the turmoil and fervor of her experience there while sharing unbelievable stories previously known only to their participants.”—Publishers Weekly“A memoir of international radical activism, from helping Algeria and Africa shake the yoke of colonialism to helping the Black Panthers establish a revolutionary outpost in exile … A firsthand account of a time when so much seemed up for grabs.”—Kirkus “Mokhtefi artfully weaves together these various strands of radical struggle, while enriching our understanding of the Third World with personal anecdotes … this story reminds us that the Third World was not merely a destination. It was also a fabric of people woven together, even if the patchwork was sometimes unexpected, and at other times, imperfectly sewn.”—Muriam Haleh Davis, Public Books“A beautifully written account full of fascinating anecdotes of a life totally given to revolutionary causes.” —Percy Zvomuya, New Frame

This is a somewhat disorganized ramble through Elaine Mokhtefi's life that began with a dirt poor upbringing in New York through the fascinating few years in she spent in Algeria after the revolution where she worked as a translator and journalist. During that time, she engaged with a number of the Black Panthers and other miscreants who were passing through Algeria and has some entertaining tales to tell. The book really could have benefited from a competent editor as Ms. Mokhtefi has led a fascinating, unusual, and varied life. There are a few nasty notes, however. How can you live in a North African country for 12 years and not speak Arabic? Despite her louanges to the sensibilities of the Algerian people, she never bothered to learn their language which makes one wonder how much she missed during those years that we would have loved to hear about. This shortcoming is typically colonialist and shared by many French people who never made the effort. (In contrast, her Algerian husband signed up for ESL courses soon after the couple arrived in New York.)She has some appallingly racist words for the pied noirs. On page 56, she writes of them: "They were functionaries, low-level employees, small-business people, soldiers, policemen, professionals, and technicians. Some did "settle" on land stolen or seized from the native population over the course of history. What I know is that they were callous, racist, cruel, and ignominious. They held power in their greedy hands and lived the "good" life. They represented the white world. They were few exceptions."Well, that is quite a generalization for a million people. I presume that Camus might be one of those exceptions. Maybe also Yves San Laurent, Patrick Bruel, Enrico Macias, Jacques Attali, and Paul Belmondo to name just a few. Ms. Mokhtefi doesn't seem to know much about the pieds noirs having arrived in Algeria after they had all left but she could have taken some time in France to become a little more informed. Most of these people were victimized by history as much as the Algerians were victimized by the French. They were hardly responsible for Algeria tortured history (which got even worse after the French left) and were very much just struggling to get through life, much like the author's parents were as they went from one business failure to another in depression-era New York, Texas, and Connecticut. If fact, holding the average petit bourgeois pied noir responsible for Algerian suffering makes about as much sense as holding the Ms. Mokhtefi (nee Klein) responsible for the miseries of the Palestinians whose rightful cause she has supported her entire life. And unlike Ms. Mokhtefi, many of those pieds noirs did speak Arabic! The author also completely glosses over the many thousands of Algerians slaughtered by a bloodthirsty FLN on its way to power, focusing entirely on the atrocities from the French side. With those exceptions, I do congratulate the author on a life well lived and her exceptional courage in melding a life that made the unusual span from Ridgefield to Algiers and back to the Upper West Side.As to fate of Algeria, it is a depressing fact that its history since independence has been so horrific that Algerians would probably have been better off sticking with the French. Many of the pieds noirs that Mokhtefi so despises were anxious in the 1950s to change the society to one that was integrated and respected the rights of all, both as a matter of principle and as the only possibility of avoiding a bloody civil war. There were many French politicians who believed the same. These people were swept away by the course of history. Fortunately (or maybe not) for Algeria, oil and gas was discovered. Had it not been, the country would have had nothing to export to the rest of the world and Algerians would now be living in abject poverty. Or maybe the absence of fossil fuels might have forced them to make something of themselves and their luminous and so magnificent country.

I was born in 1957 in Algeria, and I am so in debt for Elaine for writing her account. This book is both an educative and informative account on both world politics and personal development. I had to stop reading to search for the people Elaine refers to, and let me tell you that her book includes information that cannot be found in any other book. She does not stop as telling a single detail but offers additional and pertinent information that is definitely necessary to understand the politics at that time. In many books, things are taken out of context to frame an idea. Elaine does not do that. She shares a certain fact from which you might infer an opinion only to surprise that contradicts the same opinion.I do not know Elaine and have not met her. But I have recently heard about her through someone who knew her.A must read from those want to know about the Algerian revolution and World politics in the 60s and 70s.

Algiers, Third World Capital by Elaine Mokhtefi is a memoir and history of an American involved in the newly independent Algeria. Mokhtefi was born in New York. After the Second World War, she joined the youth movement for world peace and justice, becoming director of a militant student organization. In 1951 she settled in France as a translator and interpreter for international organizations in the new postwar world. In 1960, she joined a small team in New York as part of the Algerian National Liberation Front, lobbying the United Nations in support of the government in exile and working for Algerian independence. When the struggle was won, she made Algeria her home, working as a journalist and translator. She married the Algerian writer and liberation war veteran Mokhtar Mokhtefi, who died in 2015.Mokhtefi's short biography above speaks a great deal about the book. Her relationship with Algeria is somewhat unique. She was, after all, an American (Imperialist), non-Arab Speaking woman of Jewish descent. She was, however, at the right place at the right time and with the right attitude. Algeria's quest for independence was long, bloody, and vicious. Mokhtefi had the sympathy for the Algerians living in France and witnessed the violence against them. Algeria became her cause as she worked in the D.C. office of the Algerian National Liberation Front. The New York Office took responsibility for revolutionary Franz Fanon visit to the US although he never made it to New York. He died at Bethesda during his visit, and before his, The Wretched of the Earth was published. She moved to Algeria after its independence and worked through some unusual times. Algeria became a popular destination for those fleeing US law enforcement. Mokhtefi met airline hijackers who made Algeria their goal, Black Panthers, and Timothy Leary. The hijacking was quite famous. William Holder and his female accomplice hijacked the plane with a fake briefcase bomb in Seattle. He successfully collected $500,000 and landed in Algiers although they did not secure the release of Angela Davis. The plane and most of the money was returned to the United States through diplomatic channels. Although Algeria wanted to free the oppressed and help other nations gain their independence, making an enemy of the US was not seen as a smart position. Algeria would need the US to buy its oil. Algeria was in a tight spot between the ideological and the practical.Mokhtefi gives the reader a first-hand account of the early and turbulent history of Algeria. Time has done much to curb her revolutionary vigor, and she presents a reasonably balanced view of her experiences. I still imagine it is difficult to separate oneself from history and offer a completely unbiased account. She does give the reader the inside view of a new government and a turbulent time.

One of the funniest writers around... Ever! I've read all of the early McManus books many times over, and still am overcome with laughter every time I re-read them. If you haven't read McManus, and you like the outdoors you are missing out!! My wife knows when I read these stories because I'm unable to stifle the laughter. Others are "A Fine and Pleasant Misery", They Shoot Canoes, Don't They", Rubber Legs and White Tail Hairs, and "Never Sniff a Gift Fish". Join Pat, his Gram, his sister The Troll, the old woodsman Rancid Crab Tree; Friends -Retch Swinney, Eddie Muldoon and his Dad Mr. Muldoon, Pat's dog Strange, Mr. Grogan proprietor of Grogan's War Surplus and a whole host of other characters for some of the funniest reading ever!

What do you get when you tie a chair to the fender of an old truck with baling wire and attach a pole with a gunny sack on the end? Either a grasshopper trap or a speeding ticket. Or both and a great story. Here's another great volume of mostly true* stories about outdoorsman adventures.*probably made upShipping was quick. The book got here before I expected it.

What great short stories! My heat goes out to Mr. Muldoon. The audible version brings the characters to life.

I was very sick after a surgery and was laughing to much reading this book and others by McManus that I had to put it down at time for the tears in my eyes. So funny.

McManus once again weaves a series of stories sure to delight you and tickle your funny bone. He brings back familiar characters from his life, wife Bun, best friend Retch Sweeney, and the old woodsman Rancid Crabtree. Each story stands alone, but they all tie together through the rugged outdoor mayhem which occurs whenever Pat goes hunting, camping or fishing. Lots of fun!

The Grasshopper Trap is one of my favorite stories. Love the characters. I can't stop laughing even during the day I find myself chuckling. What joy these books have given.

Excellent as are all of Pats stories. (I can be informal, we grew up in the same hometown.)

I laughed so hard I had tears in my eyes. I had forgotten how much I enjoyed reading his articles in the outdoor magazines. Now I have to order his other books as well. Good Stuff!

I have read a lot of marketing books and remained hopeful when I purchased this one that perhaps I would find a book worth reading. Most of what I have read falls in the old genre I made a million selling swamp land and so can you. They promise the stars and deliver the swamp. No value. I was skeptical but hopeful. The Jerry McGuire line "you had me at hello" was appropriate for me in what I think of this book. From the very beginning this no nonsense and no BS approach to sharing a playoff how to actually build a marketing strategy was invaluable. My MBA marketing courses didn't teach me as clearly as this book did. I cannot recommend this book highly enough and book 5 copies for my employees. No more random acts of marketing for me...Ron HurstPresidentDeveloping Leaders Inc.

Do not let the low cost of this book fool you into taking it lightly. If you really, really want to grow your business without wasting time and scarce money on marketing, buy this book and complete the exercises inside. You will not be disappointed.Over the last 9 years I have paid coaches to help me develop my business - over $56K (not to mention the cost of travel, hotels, etc... to attend training sessions). And while I learned quite a lot about the mechanics and systems of my particular business, no coach or combination of coaches were able to help me develop a solid marketing plan that would hold up month after month, year after year (since they didn't really have one either). So I was always on the lookout for books and courses regarding marketing my business (and I have read quite a number of books on the subject). That said, I am stunned that I have learned more about marketing in the 21st century and also the specific action steps to perform to develop a solid, functional and sustainable plan from a $2.99 e-book than any other coach or book to date. I think I need to ask all those coaches I hired in the past for my money back.It was almost like the light bulbs were turning on in my brain as I read the pages and performed the exercises. Bam, bam, bam, bam, bam, bam. At the end of the book I had a complete, robust, inexpensive and sustainable marketing plan for my business. In fact, my marketing plan is so complete that I've already started implementing it.I'm a speed reader and I probably could have read the book in an hour or two. However, because I decided to compete the exercises in the book (they made a lot of sense to me and my previous coaches had not had me do the majority of these exercises) it took me over a week to compete the book. But wow, what a week of learning it was. The book is as complete as it gets. It logically progresses from the best definition of marketing I have seen, to walking through the steps and activities to define your market place, to developing the type of marking thrust across multiple marketing legs to attract clients, get clients to trust you and want to do business with you, to retaining and growing the individual customers to continue purchasing over time.No matter what business you're in, whether it's service related or manufactured goods, if you want to learn to market in the 21st century, and if you're willing to follow the advice and perform the exercises that the author Allan Dib provides in this book, then buy this book and you will learn to develop a marketing plan that will allow you to compete successfully and make you money.PS: Please don't tell my competitors about this book. I enjoy the advantage this gives me.

I am not finished with the book yet but I love it so far. I am an entrepreneur of many years, but never successful because I never had a plan. I had a stroke six years ago, which brought me to my knees, changing my life completely. I am now re-entering the professional world with an entirely different view of the way I want to do things and I have this book as my guide. This book is a treasure!

This book is a must for anyone trying to devise a marketing plan. Perfectly suited to professional services but really applies to any service type business. Before, I couldn't really say that I had a marketing plan, I was just doing what he calls "random acts of marketing". Some of them, it turns out, were good things to do but they weren't enough to constitute a purposeful plan. This is a brilliant book with many, many nuggets of wisdom. Don't waste your time reading all these reviews, just buy it.

I've been in the marketing business as an owner of a small ad agency for 40 years, and on the client side as a marketing director, and as professor of marketing teaching college--not a better more accurate marketing book to read. And I read at least 2 business books per week.David Jewell

This book book has a great deal of information for the new entrepreneur. If you've only watched YouTube videos and Google's "How-To's" on how to "run ads" on Facebook and Instagram please stop before you spend that first dollar and read or listen to this book. This book goes into depth about intricacies and the unknown that you don't know about. Not only does it give you beginning strategies, but tactics that you can carry throughout the life span of your business.

FODOR'S NORTHERN CALIFORNIA by C. Crabtree, S. Pastorino, and D. Mangin, is a 480-page guidebook on Northern California. For those not familiar with this region of America, the book will be useful guide. For these people, the book will prevent tourists from taking unproductive excursions into boring regions of northern California, such as Stockton, Lake Berryessa, Watsonville, Chico, Folsom, or Tule Lake. But for locals, the book will not likely provide any surprises. The book takes a workman-like approach, focusing on places that everybody has already heard of, and skipping some of the best things, or mentioning some of the best things (but only devoting one sentence).PHOTOGRAPHS. First, the omissions. The book left out photographs of the massive fallen redwoods at Founder's Grove at Humboldt State Park. These fallen redwoods are so much more awesome than any standing redwood trees. Also left out is Fern Canyon, at Prairie Creek Redwoods State Park (part of the Jurassic Park movie was filmed in Fern Canyon). Also unfortunately, there is no photo of the restored wooden Russian fort at Fort Ross (too bad). The most unfortunate omission, is no photo of the sinusoidal, undulating cliffs at Drakes Bay at Point Reyes. Althought there is a photo of the tufa at Mono Lake (page 282), this is unfortunately a photograph of the tufa resembling melted candles, instead of the other type of tufa at Mono Lake that resembles Gothic cathedrals. The tufa resembling Gothic cathedrals is at NAVY BEACH on Mono Lake, but there are no photos of it. It would have been nice to see a photo of one of the mechanical dolls at Musee Mecanique, located at Fisherman's Wharf. Also left out, is JOHNSON'S BEACH in Guerneville. At this beach one finds an annual jazz festival and at other times, inexpensive peddle boats where families and little kids can rotate the peddles on the boats and propel themselves around the Russian River. Also left out, is the world-class landscape at the mouth of the RUSSIAN RIVER, which features a sandbar populated by many seals, and Goat Rock, a large seastack resembling that at CANNON BEACH in Oregon. Also left out is a photograph of BERRY FALLS, located in Big Basin State Park. Also, I think it would have been nice to have a 3-page section devoted only to lighthouses in northern California (these are soooo photogenic). Also left out is BOWLING BALL BEACH, which has been on Sierra Club calendars, and which is near Point Arena. Also, there is no mention of ZACHARY'S, which arguably has better deep-dish pizza than available anywhere in California. I think a closeup photo of a slice of Zachary's deep dish pizza would have made a good photo. Generally, I would say that this book could have done a better job at selling northern California to tourists. The book includes photos of hot air balloon rides in Napa Valley (page 2), but the photo has no caption telling you what this is or where this is. Hang gliders at Fort Funston (pages 8ï·“9), but the photo has no caption telling you what this is or where it is. Truly, watching these hang gliders taking off from the cliffs would likely thrill any out-of-town visitor. How amazing it is, to see the pilots just step out into thin air, at the edge of the cliff, and begin their airborne journey over the Pacific Ocean. Jellyfish (pages 33) at Monterey Bay, apparently from the aquarium. Lone Cypress (page 51). Cable cars in S.F. (pages 79 and 103) with excellent account of the history of these cable cars (page 106). Chinatown (photos on pages 93-95). View from the Fort Barry area of the fog-enshrouded G.G. Bridge below (page 189). Napa and Sonoma vineyards (photos on pages 199, 208, 234, 244). Redwood National Park (p. 273). Twin Lakes at Mammoth Lakes (p. 294). Half Dome (p. 307) and Yosemite waterfalls (p. 318 and 323). Sequoia trees (pages 334 and 349).TEAR-OUT MAP. The book has a tear-out map of downtown San Francisco (15 inches X 17 inches), colored in red, green, beige, blue, and black. Features on the map include western edge of Presidio, western edge of Panhandle of G.G. Park, Japantown, the ever-so-wonderful Union Street, and the equally wonderful Lombard Street and Chestnut Street, the delightful Ghirardelli Square, the amazing Pier 45 with the fascinating MUSEE MECANIQUE and the fascinating U.S.S. PAMPANITO (a real submarine), and the nauseatingly overcrowded Fisherman's Wharf. Unfortunately, Musee Mecanique and U.S.S. Pampanito are not even in the index. Too bad. The map also shows Little Italy and its Caffe Greco, Caffe Puccini, and Caffe Trieste, with nearby Chinatown and several BART stations. The reverse side of the map, which is printed on semiglossy paper, has tiny photos of 17 attractions with paragraphs on G.G. Bridge, Palace of Fine Arts, Ferry Building (has many upscale cafes and restaurants), City Lights Books (beatnik bookstore), and so on.CHAPTERS. The first two chapters are introductory, and the rest are:3. Monterey Bay4. S.F.5. Bay Area6. Napa and Sonoma7. North Coast8. Redwood National Park9. Eastern Sierra10. Yosemite11. Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Parks12. Sacramento and Gold Country13. Lake Tahoe14. Far NorthCh. 5. THE BAY AREA. This chapter (pages 159-198) is about I place where I've lived for 35 years. Page 160 reads, "Sit on a dock by the bay: admire the beauty of the Bay Area from the rocky, picturesque shores of Sausalito or Tiburon." As any baby-boomer will realize, the goal of this writing is to invoke a song by Otis Redding called, DOCK OF THE BAY. Anyway, in my experience the best "docks of the bay" for scenery include one particular dock at Fisherman's Wharf where one can see a colony of about 20 really huge seals that lounges on a nearby dock. But the very, very, very best views of the bay can be had from these places:(1) FORT BARRY just north of the G.G. Bridge. You need to get there early, perhaps 8 am, in order to get a parking place along the winding road that leads to Fort Barry and to nearby viewing spots. The Fort Barry area gives you a vantage point that is higher in elevation than the nearby G.G. Bridge;(2) PALACE OF LEGION OF HONOR has a nearby strolling area with awesome vistas of the bay and the Marin Headlands;(3) ANGEL ISLAND, which requires a ferry boat ride from Fisherman's Wharf. This chapter mentions OAKLAND as a place to view the bay, but this is unfortunate, because the view from Oakland stinks. The shoreline of Oakland features hobos, riff-raff, vagrants, street scum, and many large scale construction projects. The entire coastline of Oakland is industrial, except for the Jack London Square area. Page 167 states that, in the east bay near Berkeley is TILDEN PARK where you can see "stunning bay views." But this is NOT CORRECT. Tilden Park does NOT have any views of San Francisco Bay, because Tilden Park takes the form of a deep valley, with houses and neighborhoods located on the western ridge of the valley (and so, unless you are invited into one of these houses, you do not get any view of the bay). From the east bay, you can get a nice view of the S.F. bay from the top of SATHER TOWER at the U.C. Berkeley campus. This chapter mentions MUIR WOODS (page 160), and the book is correct in stating that it is extremely crowded, and that the parking lot is tiny. The account of MUIR WOODS (pages 188-190) reads, "expect to find epic traffic jams around the tiny parking areas." Locals will know that there is an easy workaround to this problem, and this is to park about a few hundred feet down the road from Muir Woods, and to sneak into Muir Woods by way of the DIPSEA TRAIL which connects with the BEN JOHNSON Trail. These trails are not in any way crowded, and the Ben Johnson Trail lets you off in a part of Muir Woods that is not crowded.Regarding BERKELEY, I was glad to read about the nightclub, Freight & Salvage Coffeehouse (page 171), which is a center for folk music and bluegrass music. Regarding Oakland, I was glad to see a paragraph about YOSHI'S (page 178), which has devoted itself to America's very own musical idiom, namely, jazz. It is too bad that the reader gets only one paragraph about Yoshi's. I would have liked to see a list of some of AMERICA'S CULTURAL GODS who have performed at Yoshi's, such as Betty Carter, Max Roach, Dizzy Gillespie, Joe Williams, Diana Krall, McCoy Tyner, and Oscar Peterson.Back in the 1960s, Muir Woods was a pleasant place to visit, but now the towering redwood trees are dwarfed by the many smoky buses filled with tourists. For people interested in humongous redwood trees, I suggest BIG BASIN STATE PARK, but this book does NOT EVEN MENTION Big Basin State Park. Please note that Big Basin State Park has one of the most wonderful hikes in all California, namely from the beach, where the pathway is dug into the walls of a deep valley, and which leads to an Ansel Adams-style waterfall, called BERRY FALLS. Actually, there are three huge waterfalls in a row, where the biggest is Berry Falls. The other great place near the S.F. bay area to see huge redwood trees is ARMSTRONG WOODS STATE PARK, which is near the other great tourist-destination, namely, Jenner (with romantic hotel and the photogenic GOAT ROCK, and a colony of seals living on the sand bar near Goat Rock). Please note that Big Basin State Park and Armstrong Woods State Park are not even in the index (oh crap). Also in this chapter, is an account of POINT REYES (pages 194-198). We see a full-page photo of flowers with the ocean beyond, but this does not do justice to Point Reyes. The most appropriate photo would have been of the sinusoidal, undulating cliffs at DRAKES BAY. I was glad to read about the lighthouse at Point Reyes, and about the gift shops at the nearby village of POINT REYES STATION (but the authors should have mentioned the art galleries at Point Reyes Station, such as Gallery Route One or Marty Knapp Photography Gallery). I was also glad to read the book's account about the herds of tule elk living near Tomales Point. This chapter also includes, SANTA CRUZ (pages 70-78), and I was glad that the boardwalk is mentioned, and I was glad to read about, "the classic wooden Giant Dipper roller coaster." The book mentions restaurants, motels, nightclubs, and whale watching charters in Santa Cruz. But for reasons unknown, this chapter totally fails to mention Half Moon Bay, which includes art galleries, gift shops, and restaurants, and nearby secluded beaches (Cowell Ranch Beach Access) and Pomponio State Beach further to the south.Ch. 7. NORTH COAST. I've lived in northern California for about 40 years, and have devoted most of my touristing time to northern Calif. and three years of intensive touristing time to the SoCal deserts. Chapter Seven provides a poetic and very accurate description of the northern coast: "Instead of boardwalks and bikinis there are ragged cliffs and pounding waves, and the sunbathers are mostly sea lions." Regarding seals, I have delighted several times to the romping seals at SALT POINT STATE PARK and once at POINT ARENA. On page 251, we read, "The migration of the Pacific gray whales . . . lasts from December to early April." I've witnessed whales on two occasions, once off the coast of Jenner, CA, and once off the coast of Gold Beach, Oregon. The book is very accurate in its description, "Twisting Highway 1 is the scenic route to Mendocino, but the fastest one is U.S. 101." (page 251).Page 254 provides a respectful, but all-too-short, account of the history of FORT ROSS("Russian settlers established Fort Ross in 1812 on land they leased from the native Kashia people. The Russians hoped to . . . produce crops . . . for their Alaskan fur-trading operations . . . the land was privately ranched for decades." Unfortunately, there is no photo of the tourist-friendly restored buildings at Fort Ross. I have enjoyed their firing of old-fashioned cannons, something done by employees dressed in colonial garb, for the benefit of curious tourists.I was very glad to read about, "carved unusual honeycomb patterns in the sandstone called tafoni" and about the "dramatic view of Sentinel Rock" (page 257). However, I was disappointed to see no photo of the tafoni stone formations. I had a 1-man show of twentyfive tafoni color photographs (20 X 24 inches) at Coyote Point Museum in San Mateo, CA, and so, I have devoted a chunk of my life to tafoni. The book mentions TIMBER COVE RESORT located near Fort Ross, however, this motel is shockingly expensive, and the book failed to mention nearby FOR ROSS LODGE, which ordinary people can afford (page 257).I was glad to find a little paragraph about POINT ARENA LIGHTHOUSE, but disappointed that they did not mention that FOREVER YOUNG starring Mel Gibson was filmed there (page 258). Further to the north, and farther along in the book, I was very glad to read about LARRUPIN CAFE in Trinidad (an excellent gourmet restaurant), but I was sad that they did not mention the Dale Chihuly sculpture that is displayed in this restaurant. Strangely enough, the very first page of this book has a full-page photo of a glass sculpture by Dale Chihuly, but the book fails to mention the name of this artist (too bad).Ch. 14. THE FAR NORTH. This chapter concerns Lake Shasta, Mt. Shasta, and Lassen Volcanic National Park. The text reads, "With two volcanoes to view -- Lassen and Shasta -- you can learn first hand what happens when a mountain blows its top" (page 438). The book mentions restaurants in Chico, Red Bluff, Redding, Weaverville, Dunsmuir, and in the town called, Mount Shasta. The list of motels and cafes in Mount Shasta (page 453) is a good list and, in my experience, if you choose your motel carefully, the view from your room will include a great view of the conical cinder cone BLACK BUTTE, located just north of the town of Shasta. I was pleased to see a beautifully photographed full-page photo of BURNEY FALLS (page 454). This is the closest that California gets to IGUAZU FALLS, which is a majestic waterfall in South America more famed for its width than for its height. Burney Falls is beautiful because of the many shafts of water tumbling down this wide (but not very high) waterfall.I was glad to see the 1-paragraph account of LAVA BEDS NATIONAL MONUMENT (page 456), but unfortunately, there is no mention of the stunningly awesome, dramatic, and otherworldly, GLASS MOUNTAIN. Glass Mountain is located just south of Lava Beds National Monument, but it is poorly marked from the road. California has another mountain called Glass Mountain, and this is south of MONO LAKE.

I live in this area and was eager to take a look at this book and perhaps put it in our guest room for guests to peruse while they visit. While I'll still put it in the guest room, I have to say I was a bit disappointed. Like all books that try to cover a lot with a broad swath in a little amount of time, this book misses a lot. For example, In Marin County, just north of the Golden Gate, the guide covers the southern tourist towns well then ignores the largest city in Marin County -- San Rafael -- where Mission San Rafael and tons of restaurants and galleries are located. A glaring omission. Similarly the section on San Francisco is laughable, with just a few restaurants pointed out. Obviously you would need to buy a SF guide separately, but who wants to lug two books on a trip?Overall, a mediocre attempt at covering this beautiful place where I'm grateful to live.Sorry, can't recommend.

I’m in the process of planning a trip to Northern California for this year and this book is invaluable. Besides the basic facts which you might be able to figure out on your own, there are so many tips which help you plan your trip. For example for Yosemite, pointing out that while staying inside the park may seem expensive, the risks for wasting time sitting in traffic trying to get through the entrance gate in the morning is the trade off. Other tips and information such as what to do if you only have one day in Yosemite are things that you cannot figure out if you have never been there before. Listing all of the options for things to do lets you think about how you want to spend your time. For example I did not know that you could take a hands on art class or a photography walk while inside Yosemite Park. Also throughoutthe guide there is factual information that just helps educate you such as pointing out unique plants and wildlife in Yosemite. Foders also gives details such as pros and cons for visiting these places at different times of the year and how to make the most of your trip at the specific time you are going. At the start of each chapter there are bullet points of top reasons to visit that place. The way the book is laid out you can find everything you need to know about one specific place such as under Sequoia and Kings Kings Canyon National Park they will explain the best way to travel there by air in car, where to sleep, where to eat, plus the maps and ideas for planning everything out. In this way you might end up only using one chapter of the book, you just go to the place we are going to visit and you can ignore the rest of the guide book. You just get so much information from Fodor’s Travel books, they are well worth the low cost and you will get more out of your trip when using them. Rating 5 stars = Love It.
