#134,705 Paid in Kindle Store (See Top 100 Paid in Kindle Store)

Okay, so I really was just expecting to have like another journal or book with more background info on Reiki. More info other than what we get in our lesson books. So when the small book arrived I skimmed through it and see many. I mean many photo illustrations showing you more direct hand positions for a wide variety of physical and health wise ailments. Like asthma, coughing, arthritis and so on. The book has all photos numbered and when you're looking up specifics for say example asthma it'll direct you to the recommended Reiki symbol to be used and or the proposed hand positions via which exact photo to look at. Just all good info to have.

I have been into numerous martial arts (Judo, Jujitsu, Karate-Do, Hanbo-Jutsu and Kenjutsu) and other universal energy arts (Tai Chi, Qigong, Yoga and Reiki) for more than fifty five years. Since I have been a Reiki Master I have read countless books on Reiki and other healing arts; however, I had never read this excellent manual (The original Reiki Handbook of Dr. Mikao Usui with a forward by William Lee Rand) until recently. This excellent 79 page text explains clearly how the rediscoverer of Reiki taught this universal healing art. One thing to keep in mind is that this is not a comprehensive Reiki text but it does show 80 hand positions (including Gassho-prayer position). I notice in this manual that it also shows the use of the fingers in several positions. It also mentions that it is not always necessary to touch for 3 to 5 minutes as it depends on the area you are working on with a subject etc.The following material is covered in this manual: The Buddhist background of Reiki, the origin and the goal, the heart sutra, the three pillars of Reiki, Gassho, Reiji-Jo, Chiryo, touching and healing, the breath, the tanden, the healing techniques, and Reiki Ryoho Hikkei-Dr. Usui’s hand positions. If you are seeking the most authentic presentation of Dr. Mikao Usui’s Reiki method this is a must book to have in your library.Rating: 5 Stars. Joseph J. Truncale (Author: Chair/Seated Tai Chi, Qigong, and Yoga for seniors and the physically challenged).

I already had a paper copy of this book and bought the Kindle version, well, frankly because I misplaced it. This slim-looking volume is a treasure to anyone involved or even interested in Reiki. As a Master level Reiki, I want it nearby at all times, and to study it often. The cover of the book lists Dr. Mikao Usui and Frank Arjava Petter as authors. The Amazon article lists Usui and Christine M. Grimm as authors and leaves Petter out entirely, which is incorrect. Grimm did a wonderful TRANSLATION from GERMAN to English. Frank and others including his wife Chetna (who is Japanese) translated the Japanese material, originally to Frank's native German. Dr. Mikao Usui was the founder of modern Reiki, which deals with Chi or Ki but is specifically devoted to healing and has safety measures built in to prevent harm (Chi Gong is powerful, but has martial disciplines as well as healing ones). It had been believed by many that none of his material was written down and that he only taught orally and somewhat secretively. It is no coincidence that this book revealing otherwise has a Forward by William Lee Rand, who researched Usui's life and practice in Japan and himself dispelled many fallacies concerning Usui. Rand founded the Karuna Reiki discipline and has done much to shine light on the subject of Reiki in the West. To be clear, "The Original Handbook of Dr. Mikao Usui" is really more the inclusion and subject matter of the book, a research project of Frank Arjava Petter and his wife Chetna. Petter lives, practices and teaches Reiki in Japan - the first Westerner to do so. He gives us some of the historical and Buddhist background of Usui. This book has quite a bit of analytical and anecdotal material by Petter, and all of it is valuable, especially his elegant exposition of Reiki meditation. Simple and profound, that part alone would be worth the price of the book. However, as advertised, it does include translated material from Usui's handbook, with photo illustrations done by Petter using a professional model and showing hand positions, et cetera, as well as some descriptive artwork. Petter states in the Introduction though that this is a SECTION of the handbook. So I expect there will be further presentations of the remainder of the Usui materials provided to Petter by the legendary Japanese healer Oishi. Petter points out that the Western hand positions are a simple subset of a greater variety of positions shown in the Usui materials. They are not wrong, there are simply more. And there are more ways of focusing Reiki power than those. Touch is ONE tool of several, depending on the patient's needs and condition. But they are an important one. The Handbook lists maladies with the specific positions to treat them, along with observations of other considerations by Petter along the way. I could go on and on about this book, but if you are into Reiki and interested in the actual details including what Usui taught, buy it. At the risk of sounding trite, it's awesome.

This book provides grounded, practical techniques that are clearly rooted in the systematic method presented by Usui-sensei. You will not find much to help you in this book if you are looking for a more shamanic or intuitive approach to Reiki, but it is excellent if you are hoping to find a step by step guidebook. I would highly recommend this work for level one practitioners or for those who have trouble sensing energy, because the approach presented relies on method over any innate or trained sensitivity on the part of the practitioner.

So far, this is an excellent book. The one MAJOR drawback that I see is the photos in the Kindle edition are tiny and hard to see - more like thumbnails. For the price I would think the pictures would be much larger (or if you could click on them for a full sized version). If you could please address this, I would much appreciate it.

As a Reiki Master in the Usui Traditional Reiki system, this book is a Treasure, and worth its weight in gold!Excellent presentation, and excellent credibility - Frank Arjavah Petter is authentic, learned and highly respected in the Reiki World, and his homage to Dr. Usui is very rewarding and inspiring. Its a great reference for hands-on Reiki Healing!

Very insteresting. A great read for all Reiki practitioners. I feel like I got a better sense of who Usui Sensei really was. Really enjoyed this book

A great book but I found THE Classroom Management Book (by the same author) more helpful than this one. The First Days of School sets the stage for the strategy of procedures in the classroom. THE Classroom Management Book fast-forwards through theory and shows real-life procedures that you can actually use. If you already have a good grasp of teaching philosophies or you've been teaching for more than a year, you can probably skip this one and go straight to the sequel.

I had always heard that this book was useful & was like the educator's bible, but when it arrived I wasn't sure if I would agree (it looks like an outdated book!). After reading the required chapters for class, I realized how true it was that this book was an educator's goldmine to pertinent information to make the first day of school go smoothly. I highly encourage young teachers to purchase this book & read it, & keep it in your library for years to come! There is so much useful information in here that I doubt many people would disagree with Wong's ideas!

One of the books in my teaching canon. Great for new teachers. Go slow to go fast! Spending time putting in routines, rituals, and expectations in the beginning of the year saves all kinds of teaching time and sorrow later in the year.

This is a great book for teaching at elementary level with innocent minds. Also, there are many good organizational tips. However, when teaching Algebra II to public high school students in a socially dysfunctional area where student respect for even society at large is in trouble, then this book fails to provide the character building plans to save such students.

This is great tool to help you get the year started off right! I read this book this summer before taking the online courses offered through Utah State University's STEDI program. I'm working as a substitute teacher and started the year off in a long term assignment, so this was a huge help in soothing my beginning of the year jitters and answering questions that I knew the answer to but offered reassurances. I find myself going back to it sometimes for new ideas and encouragement. It's great for the first time teacher just as much as for the seasoned teacher!

As an education student this book is a required reading for one of our classes. After going through the book I have to honestly say this book should have been required a lot earlier in the program as I have found the information in this book to be more helpful than any of the other books that we were required to read. The information by Harry K. Wong in this book is an absolute must for any new, or experienced, teacher. The book is not full of technical jargon, as many books on education are, and is written in a simple format that makes it an easy read. And to complete the entire package there is a website that goes along with the book that expands on much of the information in the book making it an even more invaluable resource.Harry K. Wong is my Educational Hero.

Pretty easy read consider it was a textbook.Good information, but too much of telling you what you need to achieve, without enough information on how to achieve it.Lot of good stories, but not enough in-depth information on how to create good "classroom management".

This is one of the most amazing books on teaching practices I have ever read! I love how it starts out with a warning that it's not a book for those who see teaching as a "job" but for those who see it an opportunity to change lives. There are so many great, practical ideas that I am already using - and LOVING the results! If you are a teacher, studying to be a teacher, or love a teacher you must read this book.A bonus for me was I got a used copy that someone had put notes in the margins with some additional ideas to add to the book - love it! It's like an exchange of great ideas. I know my students' educational experiences will be so much better because I have read (and am totally keeping for reference) this book!

this book has many errors. It had pages 53-68 duplicated and left pages 69-84 out. I can not take test without all the info covered. The contents page states that I am missing hazard-classification scale. That is what I have found thus far. Only two weeks into 8 week course. NOT happy at all.

The book was in very good shape. It arrived when scheduled, with no hiccups. Considering this was my third attempt to purchase and actually get this book, I am quite pleased.

Book in good condition. Was the exact material needed to complete my college course.

I bought this as a text. Not bad but not the best either; you'd be better off finding a current year review of the laws as specific for the state that you are doing the work in through a professional safety publishing company. The material on the CD is a waste.

Great!

Received it immediately. Needed it for class and got it before class started even though I ordered it later than I should have, great condition.

The only thing was the binding is starting to come apart. I had to tape the first page back togethet. Other than that it has been great.

Covered and helped me understand everything we went over in class. I could see myself using this for reference later in my career also.

“Maha” means “high” or “great” in Sanskrit; a “maharajah” is a great king, a high king. And the Bharatas are an ancient royal house, the descendants of the legendary emperor Bharata (“the cherished one”). Therefore, for readers from outside India, the title "Mahabharata" need not be mysterious; as "The Iliad" is “The Epic of Ilium” or “The Epic of Troy,” so "The Mahabharata" is “The Epic of the Great House of the Bharatas.” And it is good to know that from the beginning, as a non-Indian reader may need a good bit of contextual introduction in order to properly appreciate this seminal epic of classical India. In the book’s foreword, John D. Smith of Cambridge University not only describes the challenges of providing a helpful translation of "The Mahabharata" (unabridged, it would be twice the length of the Bible), but also situates the Western reader in the social, historical, and religious context that produced the poem.In order to understand "The Mahabharata", Smith emphasizes, one must understand the concept of dharma, as all of the poem’s characters talk constantly about it. As Smith explains, “A person’s dharma is what it is right for that person to do, but one person’s dharma is different from another’s” (p. xviii). The importance of this concept makes perfect sense in the context of a rigidly hierarchical society that, from top to bottom, consisted of the following four classes: the priestly brahmins who maintained humankind’s relationship with the gods; the brave and noble kshatriyas who led kingdoms in war and peace; the vaishyas, farmers and merchants whose work provided the economic base for the society; and the humble shudras who did the low-down dirty work at the absolute bottom of the social scale. As "The Iliad" is at its heart an epic of war, so too is "The Mahabharata." The combatants here are not the Greeks and the Trojans, but rather two groups of warring cousins: the Pandavas, who have a legitimate claim to the throne of the Bharatas, and the Kauravas, who usurp the throne for a time, giving rise to the catastrophic Kurukshetra War.The eminent Pandavas include Yudishthira, the king, who is said to be ever in harmony with dharma; Bhima, who like Samson or Heracles combines superhuman strength with a hot temper and a tendency not to overthink issues; and Prince Arjuna, the “wealth-winner” who is brave, handsome, and irresistible to women. All five of the Pandava brothers are married to the same woman, the beautiful Draupadi. Helping Arjuna is Krishna, an avatar (a god in human form). Krishna serves as Arjuna’s charioteer during the Kurukshetra War, provides much-needed help at crucial moments, and conveys a sense that the gods are watching over these calamitous events and will make sure that everything turns out as it should.Chief antagonist among the Kauravas is Duryodhana, the spoiled and willful son of the Kaurava king Dhrtarashtra. Combining Iago’s motiveless malignity with Loki’s love for mischief-making and general chaos, Duryodhana is consumed with jealous rage at the very idea of the Pandavas enjoying their throne in peace and ruling the world with justice. Therefore, Duryodhana concocts a plan to hurl the Pandavas from their throne, and to rule the world in their place.Disregarding the advice of the wise counselor Vidura, Duryodhana connives with his uncle, the gambler Shakuni, to set up a rigged dicing match through which Yudishthira will gamble away his entire kingdom. The gambling match works as planned, from Duryodhana’s point of view; not only do Yudishthira and the Pandavas lose the kingdom, but they are sentenced to twelve years’ exile in the forest. Yudishthira may be the supreme lord of dharma and all that, but it’s clearly not safe to let him anywhere within 200 miles of Las Vegas. The Kauravas add insult to injury, publicly dishonouring the beautiful and virtuous Draupadi in front of her five husbands. One of the Kauravas, Duhshasana, “laid hold of Draupadi Krishna with her deep black hair and led her towards the hall, unprotected in the midst of her protectors, dragging her as the wind drags at a battered plantain tree” (p. 143) – even though Draupadi is in the midst of her period and is wearing only a single garment. One need not be deeply versed in the nuances of classical Indian culture to know that this disgrace against Draupadi will give the Pandavas a powerful motive for revenge. The Pandavas serve out their exile and return; but Duryodhana, disregarding once again the wise advice of Vidura, will not share the kingdom with his cousins, and the stage is set for war. As the Pandavas prepare for war, Arjuna receives extended advice from Krishna, in the form of the Bhagavad Gita, itself one of the core texts of the Hindu faith. The ideas of dharma discussed above receive strong emphasis here, as Krishna declares, “Better one’s own dharma ill-done than the dharma of another well performed” (p. 357).At last, it is time for the Kurukshetra War, and for battle passages that go on and on and on. The great heroes of the Pandava and Kaurava sides kill thousands and thousands of their lower-ranking opponents; charioteers in particular seem to be in an especially vulnerable position, like those guys in the red security tunics from "Star Trek." When a great hero on either side is killed, it takes dozens of pages for said killing to happen, and only after said hero has displayed his heroism – the killing of Bhishma, one of the noblest of the Kauravas, is characteristic in that regard, and it takes Bhishma a particularly long time to die (more about that later). If you like to read about battlefield violence, it is here in abundance – as when the strong-armed and strong-tempered Bhima finally gets his revenge against Duhshasana, the Kaurava prince who disgraced the princess Draupadi after the gambling match:“Drawing his sharp sword with its excellent blade, and treading upon the throat of the writhing man, he cut open his breast as he lay upon the ground, and drank his warm blood. Then, having quaffed and quaffed again, he looked about him, and in his rage spoke these extravagant words: ‘Better than mother’s milk, or honey with ghee, better than well-prepared mead, better than a draught of the water of heaven, or milk or curd, or the finest buttermilk, today I consider this draught of the blood of my enemy better than all of these!’” (pp. 510-11)Interesting to wonder what Quentin Tarantino would do with a passage like *that*, if assigned the task of bringing "The Mahabharata" to film. Fortunately, "The Mahabharata" has already been adapted for cinema -- quite powerfully, by Peter Brook in 1989 -- so I guess Tarantino's off the proverbial hook in that regard. There is an interesting note of moral ambiguity to the way the Pandavas win the Kurukshetra War, as Bhima, preparing for a climactic duel with the wicked Duryodhana, is advised by Krishna that “if Bhima fights according to dharma, he will never triumph; but if he fights unfairly he can kill Duryodhana. It is said that the gods defeated the demons by means of deception” (p. 549). Cheat to win? Really? But it is on that note that the war concludes in a Pandava victory. And the cost is high: the eighteen-day war has a final body count of 1,660,020,000 dead and 24,165 missing. Yes, that’s 1 *billion*, with a “b.”The end of the war is followed by a long passage of catechism, as the still-dying Bhishma, lying on a bed of arrows, instructs the victorious Yudishthira on the duties of a good king. The lessons go on after Bhishma finally dies and passes on to a hero’s heaven; Krishna encourages Yudishthira, who still grieves over the loss of all those killed in the war, to put aside his grief and take up the duties of a king, and provides tutelage in the teachings of Brahma through a series of parables. “The seers then asked him to resolve their doubts as to which is the highest *dharma*; Brahma answered that it is non-violence” (pp. 707-08). One senses here cultural factors that may have influenced Mahatma Gandhi in developing his own philosophy of fighting injustice through non-violence.There is a final, triumphant vision of all those killed in the war meeting in harmony and peace with the living loved ones that they have left behind: “Now all those best heirs of Bharata met together, free from their anger and jealousy and sin; observing the fair and exalted rules laid down by Brahmin seers, they were all now as cheerful-hearted as the gods in heaven. Son met with father and mother, wife with husband, brother with brother and friend with friend….[A]nd through the seer’s grace other Kshatriyas, their anger gone for ever, gave up their enmities and made friends” (p. 747). On that hopeful note of reconciliation, "The Mahabharata" moves toward its conclusion.I read "The Mahabharata" while traveling in India. Throughout our time in India, I was impressed to see how deeply "The Mahabharata" is woven into the national fabric of Indian life. Our hotel in New Delhi was located on Indraprastha Avenue, and our driver took pride in telling us that Delhi *is* Indraprastha, the ancient capital of Pandava glory. A traveler to modern Kurukshetra will be greeted by a great statue of Krishna guiding Arjuna’s chariot. And when *The Mahabharata* was adapted for broadcast as a television miniseries in India, the modern nation of India is said to have virtually shut down from 1988 to 1990, anytime the mini-series was airing. Anyone who wants to begin developing a greater understanding of India, in all its brilliant complexity, should make a point of reading "The Mahabharata."

If you are interested in Asian mythology or Indian mythology(or more correctly ancient history) this is a must read. I purchased an abridged version and it is still at least a thousand pages long so be prepared to take some time to finish it. They have taken out most of the long repetive portions of the story which I didn't mind. It is still engaging and interesting with all important story points intact.

Abridged version with the correct translation. Hard to read so only appropriate or the serious scholar

Good book

Nice fabric cover and sewn in binding. Delivered very quickly.

I wish it were the unAbridged, but a good book for its price.

I really like the Penguin Classics. I also have the Bhagavad Gita, and have found their translations very clear, without a lot of extraneous prose. Very direct translations that are easy to understand.

it is very slow reading if you want to keep your bearings reading this one. so many people and stories and places. but to anyone who knows what it's about, it's a good one to have.
