There was so very much in The Conscious Parent: Transforming Ourselves, Empowering Our Children by Shefali Tsabary that resonated with me. It is not a how-to book of parenting strategies but a philosophical guide for walking the parenting journey with mindfullness. I put down the book feeling like my mind just left a conscious parenting retreat, punctuated with moments of, “Ah, yes,” and feeling spiritually rejuvenated. I definitely recommend this book for parents in the advanced class. That said, I do have four significant points of contention.Lack of connectionI walked away from this reading experience feeling a definite sense of separateness as the ideal (in her opinion). But connection is the foundation of everything for humans. The author of this book sees the path to enlightenment as being a solitary one. I disagree – passionately.Devaluing of full time parenthoodThe author conveys a clear message that working away from your child gives them the greatest benefit and further diminishes full time parenthood by expounding the insignificance of direct involvement in your child’s daily life. I wholeheartedly disagree and attitudes like this contribute to a societal devaluing of mothering.Only child perspectiveSome of what she describes is not applicable for a family with multiple children. For example, she espouses a lot of alone time and silence. Having three little boys myself, they are always together and it is never silent.Traditional Public SchoolA lot of the book is told through the lens of a family with a child in traditional public school. So much so, that it is presented as the way of life, as opposed to a choice she has made.Despite these concerns, I still recommend the book for parents who seek to evolve.Review published at www.sageparenting.com.

I never write reviews, but in this case I have no choice. I have a PhD in clinical psychology, and I think this is one of the most important books ever written. EVER. Anyone who has a child, wants to have a child, is having a child, or WAS a child should read this. If Dr. Tsabary's message could get through to any of them, the world would be a better place.

I'm a Christian. I've read a ton of parenting books. I homeschool my kids, I live with them 24/7. I've tried a lot of different techniques and they all feel like a cop-out for the real reason behind the struggles. Like Dr Shefali says, "Stop the insanity!" This book has brought a different perspective to the whole scenario. Things are finally making sense. It all starts with me, the parent. The problem is not my kid. The problem is me! Please don't freak out!! You're probably thinking, "oh, yeah, here we go again. It's all my fault!" Yes and no! The good news is that there is a solution. I'm loving this book and I am reading her other one too, The Awakened Family. Don't give up on your kids. Buy this book today and start listening to Dr Shefali's teaching on YouTube.

Bought this for mom- may not have been the right move because she got offended, however, I started reading the book and it is very insightful (it's much easier for me to take in because I am not a parent). I also believe kids can better understand their parents and face issues they struggled with during childhood by reading this.

This book was good info in regards to being aware of your own presence and letting your kids be what they are however it seemed it was just repeating all the info throughout the book. At times the author makes you feel like if something is happening to your child or when they act up its your own fault. I continued to read it and got past that and then just felt like I was re-reading the same info. She basically does not want you to have any sort of expectations from your kid otherwise they are going to rebel in different ways.Worth the read for the info but don't feel bad about yourself because of the focus on yourself she puts.

Great, great book for anyone who is about to become a parent (like myself) or someone who already has kids. I haven't finished the book yet but I love that this is not a how-to book, it's a book that walk you through the conscious process and how many unconscious responses that we already have programmed in us.Definitely a very holistic/stoic approach to parenting but if you already have that mindset about life. this book will spark your imagination :)

Shefali dives in very early in her book and really show how we can be more effective parents. I realized that was parenting from my past and not learning who my children are and are becoming. Now, I listen to them, show more concern. I ask them questions like "why do you feel this way, or why did you answer like that."I see improvement in my children. I realize that every child is a small reflection of myself. Once I begin to do some deep searching within myself, I begin to understand them more and know how to better help them as they help me aslo...

This is, in all seriousness, the best parenting book I've ever read. It isn't about "how to fix" your kid(s), it's about how to fix YOU.

This review is for the Kindle version with the Audible narration. An interesting expose on how the human brain is naturally predisposed to sense a spiritual element in reality. This book is not simply one very long argument. It is filled with the results of research from various connected scientific fields. It is not difficult to follow and understand the information presented. It is a well written book where the explanation and ideas presented flow smoothly and easily from each page to the reader's mind. The author is an atheist and you may not agree with his non-G-d position or the theory he presents along with an interesting array of scientific evidence. However, almost everyone should be able to relate to a number of the ideas presented herein through personal experience with them. If you have raised or have spent a lot of time with children you will find that you share another common area of experience that is consistent with the author's information. This does not mean that you will end up coming to or agreeing with the author's conclusions, after all this is still a theory and not necessarily a scientific fact. There are many places throughout the book where the author states his belief about what is going on minus any evidentiary support. Nonetheless, I found the book interesting and written in a manner that comfortably holds the reader's or listener's, as the case may be attention. The narration continues to be consistently excellent and even superb. It contributed substantially to making this book a very good experience.

SuperSense: Why We Believe in the Unbelievable by Bruce M. Hood"SuperSense" is the engaging, fascinating book about the origins of supernatural beliefs, why they are so common, and why they may be so difficult to get rid of. It's a popular science book that is a lot to fun to read and ultimately enlightening. Dr. Bruce Hood uses modern psychology, cognitive neuroscience and an entertaining prose to entertain the masses in this wonderful and at times enthralling read. This 320-page book is composed of the following ten chapters: 1. What Secret Do John McEnroe and David Beckham Share?, 2. Could You Wear a Killer's Cardigan?, 3. Who Created Creationism?, 4. Blooming, Bussing Babies, 5. Mind Reading, 6. Freak Accidents, 7. Would You Willingly Receive a Heart Transplant from a Murderer?, 8. Why Do Traveling Salesman Sleep with Teddy Bears?, 9. The Biology of Belief, and 10. Would You Let Your Wife Sleep with Robert Redford?Positives:1. Fascinating topic in the hands of a master storyteller.2. Great popular science book that is a treat to read while educational at the same time. The author does a wonderful job of intermixing sound science with an interesting narrative, and a bit of humor too for good measure.3. Thought-provoking questions and answers based on sound science.4. Neuroscience and psychology made fun.5. Supersense defined. Religion, paranormal activity, and wishful thinking; the three points on a continuum of supernatural thinking.6. So many great examples and some bordering on the bizarre but always interesting. Hood "exposes a wide range of human beliefs and behavior that go beyond traditional notions of the supernatural".7. Great quotes abound, "Supernatural beliefs are a product of natural thinking".8. A lot of the studies depicted in this book have to do with child development and cognitive neuroscience, one of the author's areas of expertise.9. So much wisdom in one book. "We either accept ideas or reject them, but seldom do we consider why".10. One of the most compelling themes in this book is why it is easier for people to believe in the supernatural over natural explanations. Mind design and natural selection is our designer.11. The beliefs behind superstitious practices. Vegas will never be the same.12. Interesting looks at faulty reasoning. The reliance of unconscious inferences.13. Interesting studies of the brain are found throughout this fascinating book. The things that make us human.14. In defense of science..."the bedrock of our knowledge and wisdom". The difference between supernatural and scientific beliefs. The contrast between creationist and the scientific theory of evolution.15. An absorbing look at religion, "All religions are based on supernatural beliefs, but not all supernatural beliefs are based on religion". The number one reason why people believe in the supernatural.16. Evolution it does a species good.17. Interesting look at how we generate beliefs. Many fascinating studies involving newborns and children.18. Mind reading...theory of mind. The intentional stance. The chemicals involved oxytocin as an example. The illusion of free will and the soul. Great stuff!19. Homeopathy the supernatural quackery to real medicine.20. Bizarre beliefs a fascinating look.21. Essential reasoning, psychological essentialism. So many great examples, some involving art.22. Interesting look at bizarre disorders.23. The biology of belief. Common supersenses like the sense of being stared at. Confirmation bias.24. Neurotransmitter systems.25. The future of supernatural beliefs.Negatives:1. Links did not work.2. This book will cause cognitive dissonance to most likely theists.3. Having to buy extra copies for relatives and friends. In summary, I really enjoyed this book. There are certain books I connect better than others and this is one of them. A great mix of psychology, neuroscience, evolution and fascinating cases that makes this book a joy to read. This is an excellent popular science book that addresses supernatural beliefs and it did so to my satisfaction. I highly recommend it!Further suggestions: "Subliminal: How Your Unconscious Mind Rules Your Behavior" by by Leonard Mlodinow, "Immortality: The Quest to Live Forever and How It Drives Civilization" by Stephen Cave, "The Believing Brain: From Ghosts and Gods to Politics and Conspiracies---How We Construct Beliefs and Reinforce Them as Truths" by Michael Shermer, "The Scientific American Brave New Brain: How Neuroscience, Brain-Machine Interfaces, Neuroimaging, Psychopharmacology, Epigenetics, the Internet, and ... and Enhancing the Future of Mental Power" by Judith Horstman, "The Blank Slate: The Modern Denial of Human Nature" by Steven Pinker, "Who's in Charge?: Free Will and the Science of the Brain?" and "Human: The Science Behind What Makes Us Unique", by Michael S. Churchland, "Paranormality" by Richard Wiseman, "The Myth of Free Will, Revised & Expanded Edition" by Cris Evatt, and "The Brain and the Meaning of Life" by Paul Thagard.

Like many of you who are reading this, I can't throw books away. Even thinking about it makes me uncomfortable, so there is no way I could possibly hold a book over a garbage can and just let it drop. Ugh.I don't know why this should be, to be honest. I mean, they're just books, right? Paper and ink that anyone can buy. And not even special books - first edition, autor-signed, given to me by my beloved grandmother on her deathbed. I would be hard-pressed to throw away even bad books. Mein Kampf, Dianetics, A Series of Unfortunate Events - I would save even these from the trashpile. Not because they're worth reading, but because they're books.I'm not a squishy, sentimental man, either. I can tell dead baby jokes without flinching. I've participated in the burning of an American Flag. I've flipped off the White House (it was the Bush era - I couldn't NOT flip it off), and if you give me a photo of the Pope, I'm pretty sure I can tear it up on live TV.So what is it about these mass-produced blocks of paper that instills in me such reverence? This question is part of what Bruce Hood discusses in his book Supersense, appropriately subtitled, "Why we believe in the unbelievable."Hood is a psychologist by trade, and this book is an investigation into why we persistently believe in things for which we have no evidence. This can range from religious adherence and the firm belief in things like "holiness" and "sinfulness" all the way to haunted houses, superstitious behavior, and the belief that evil acts can somehow "taint" a physical object. In one demonstration that he refers to throughout the book, Hood offers a cardigan to his audience. It's a nice enough sweater, perhaps a little out of date, but clean and it looks comfortable. It's the kind of cardigan you might wear on a chilly autumn evening and think nothing of it.Then Hood tells the audience that the sweater belonged to Fred West. For those of us who are not from England, Fred West is one of the most notorious serial killers of the last century. Over a span of twenty years, he and his wife tortured, raped and murdered at least twelve girls, two of whom were their own daughters. They're very well-known in England, and as soon as people found out that the nice comfortable cardigan had belonged to Fred West, no one wanted to touch it, much less put it on. Even though there's no rational basis to believe so, many people believed that there was some kind of contamination linked to the sweater, and feared that Fred West's evil would somehow transfer to them.As someone who tries to be rational as much as possible, I have found myself wondering why I hold on to beliefs that I know are fundamentally irrational. I wonder it even more when I watch the news or surf the internet and see how many people believe in things like "healing energy," homeopathy, guardian angels, magic spells and the like. "What century are we living in?" I ask myself as I curl up into a ball and weep. The Enlightenment was only two hundred years ago - why are we backsliding?Thinkers and scientists such as Richard Dawkins believe that this kind of fundamental irrationality is a learned trait. Parents pass it on to children, who then pass it on to theirs. Dawkins even goes so far as to consider bringing your child to church to be "child abuse," and believe that if only we can break the chain of superstition, a new Age of Reason will emerge.Hood disagrees, and he makes a pretty compelling case. He doesn't argue for the existence of the supernatural at all in this book, but rather the sense of the supernatural - the Supersense, as he calls it. This is the feeling that someone is watching us, the belief that one object is somehow more "special" than another, identical object. It is the reason we plead with our computers when they don't work, why we anthropomorphise so many things is our world, and why we revere the remains of saints and shun the sweaters of murderers. It is a sense that there should be a supernatural world out there, even if we can't prove it.Hood believes that the origin of this supersense is in the way our early minds develop as infants. In that very early stage of life, we try to make sense of the world as best we can. Babies are little scientists, testing reality against their observations again and again, and coming up with hypotheses about how the world should work. This need to understand the world is hard-wired into our brains as part of our "mind design," and not only can we never get rid of it, it may be essential to our development into fully-formed human beings.By testing children and how they observe the world, Hood tries to see how the mind develops from birth onwards, without the years of cultural indoctrination that Dawkins and those of similar opinion decry. These tests show how children expect reality to behave, and what happens when their expectations don't match their observations. He looks at how children imbue the world with life and purpose - the Sun, always smiling in children's drawings, exists to give us light, trees to shade us and the grass is there for us to play on. This endowment of purpose, or telos, if we're going to be philosophical and pompous, is something we continue to do even into adulthood. The more we learn about the world, the more we find out that it doesn't follow the common-sense rules that we laid down in our infancy. It's hard to accept, for example, that we aren't the end product of evolution - even worse, evolution has no end product in mind. What's more, after our brains went through years and years of classifying the world into neat little categories such as "living/non-living; intelligent/non-intelligent; plant/animal," it's jarring to know that we're only 5% of the way off from chimpanzees and 50% off from being bananas!Children intuit the world as they grow, and that is part of the mind-building process. This is the architecture of our minds. More often than not, it produces a rational picture of the world and how it works, but not always - the trade-off is that some supernatural ideas come along for the ride. While the mind-building process does prepare us to exist in the greater world, it also makes us fundamentally irrational beings. Some people are more able to overcome this irrationality than others, but even the hard-core skeptics may find it difficult to put on the sweater of Fred West, or have trouble not smiling when they're in the presence of the sweater of Fred Rogers. In a way, this book was both a disappointment and a relief. I have always hoped that one day humanity would rise above its irrationality and start appreciating the world for what it is, instead of wasting time looking for things that just aren't there. But if Hood's hypothesis is correct, that's never going to happen. As long as we are human, there will always be a streak of the irrational in us. Try as we might, we will always have superstitions, strange beliefs, and we will always be looking for things that we cannot see.And of course, perhaps this is a good thing. This irrationality is what gives us passion, it's what connects us together as a species and as societies. This belief in the sacred, for example, is what gives rise to shared values in a community and a shared sense of what is important and what is forbidden. Without it, we'd be a species of Lex Luthors - fundamentally selfish, sociopathic and without the ability to connect to others. On a personal note, it means that maybe I don't have to be so hard on myself. I mean, being rational is great and all, but when you get to the point where you find yourself thinking something like, "Yeah, what is the big deal about incest?" then you know that it's time to give the prefrontal cortex a break. And instead of beating myself up for not being able to completely disavow all the goofy little supernatural things that I cling to, perhaps I can just accept them as part of what makes me who I am. I know there's nothing truly special about my books, but the supersense tells me otherwise. It may not be right, but at least it gives my life a little more color.-------------------------------------------------"If it's true that our beliefs can be supernatural but unconnected to religion, then it must also be true that humans will not necessarily evolve into a rational species, because a mind designed for generating natural explanations also generates supernatural ones."- Bruce Hood, Supersense-------------------------------------------------

Rumi's works are valuable as social science in their reference to psychological development (the journey of soul). In order to understand Rumi, one must take a classical hermeneutical stance to uncover his intended meanings. This can only be done well if one understands Rumi himself. Franklin Lewis' text is now the greatest aid in so doing: there is no other extant text that gives such a thorough and accurate portrait of Rumi. It offers in-depth description and analysis of his antecedents, as well as the 13th century contemporary influences on his own psychological development. Other than Rumi's works themselves, no other book has been written that allows such insight into who he really was. Professor Lewis has written a work that is an invaluable aid in hermeneutically understanding Rumi, and in providing a richness of context through which one can better decode Rumi's own meaning-making.

I find this book to be an extremely valuable and reliable resource. I use it and highly recommend it to everyone including my students in the In The Footprints of Rumi [...] course that I teach both live and online. This work is a labor of LOVE!

Very informative, enlightening, engaging.

Before starting this book, I had never loved a book from the first sentence of the introduction. An extraordinary clear and important Rumi book.

Rumi -- Past and Present, East and West, The Life, Teaching and Poetry of Jalal al-Din Rumi by Franklin D. Lewis is an encyclopaedic work on the greatest Sufi poet the world of Islam has ever produced. Mawlana Jalal al-Din Mohammad Balkhi, known as Mawlavi in his home land and as Rumi in the West, has been introduced to the Western world by scholars such as Nicholson, Arberry, Schimmel, Chittick and Nasr. Since then, scholarly critical works and translations of Rumi's works, Masnavi and Divan-e Shams, have appeared in different languages. Recently-published English translations by Bly and Barks are among the best sellers in America. What has made Rumi so popular in world cultures is his humanistic message of tolerance and respect for the other. Lewis has given Rumi full justice by writing this comprehensive book. Like Rumi himself, Lewis goes beyond any boundary to discuss Rumi's life, poetry, philosophy and different aspects of his message in high and popular cultures around the world with detailed scholarly notes that are immensely valuable for all researchers interested in the Islamic culture and civilization. Besides, Lewis's inspiring book provides the reader with many e-resources on Rumi and Mevlevi Order already unknown to both experts and general readers. These e-resources and internet links prove to open up new horizons for further research on Rumi in the 21th century. Scholars interested in interdisciplinary studies will find Lewis's book indispensable as well. Once again, Lewis's illuminating book shows that there is no end to research on one of the greatest philosopher-poets of the world.Alireza Anushiravani, Shiraz University, Shiraz, Iran

It is a little different from what the title suggests - it is supposed to be about concurrency models, and it actually is, but it covers more about Clojure than concurrency models themselves. In other words, this book is mainly about how to use the concurrency models in Clojure (and why some features are/aren't included in Clojure itself). If you are familiar with Clojure, this book would be the best. If you are not, however, you can feel uneasy in many parts of this book, even if you are interested in studying it - though this book covers many features of Clojure, it is not enogh to learn Clojure with this book alone.

Very readable and pleasant compared to other material on the subject that I have found. I found it to be an excellent introduction. The scope is well-constrained, as well as the depth of each subject.

This book is a concise and clear picture of the major options available to solve problems of concurrency. Today if you want to understand computing solutions that tackle the toughest problems you need a clear picture of what really work. This book is an excellent navigator regarding the choices programmers faces at the beginning of inspiring data projects.

Each chapter is concise and to the point. Paul takes you on a quick tour through 7 concurrency paradigms. Great as your first read but not nearly indepth enough to start coding large concurrent software.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book, I highly recommend it to any serious developer.

Purely because of kindle formatting. Code on kindle is unreadable.

so interestinga must to have!

From School Library Journal

Gr 10 Up—This witty, no-holds-barred look at the LGBTQ experience provides information that parents or school friends often can't or won't give. The book covers dating, religious perceptions of LGBTQ people, bullying, coming out, and more. Employing occasionally snarky, informal language, Dawson provides very direct, frank guidance (among the subheadings are "Doing the Sex" and "Why Are Gay Men So Slutty?"), including sexual advice (complete with labeled anatomical cartoons). However, these are all topics about which teens are curious. Though the book has an intended audience, a variety of readers will appreciate it. VERDICT An insightful option for those with questions about what it's like to be LGBTQ.—April Sanders, Spring Hill College, Mobile, AL

Review

"An exuberant guide to LGBT life takes the stance that "being L or G or B or T or * is SUPER FUN." Speaking with candor, humor, and enthusiasm, Dawson addresses topics from coming out to sexually transmitted infections to sex apps. With irreverent chapter titles like "Stereotypes Are Poo" and a chatty narrative voice, the tone is largely upbeat, though the author also touches on "some MEGA-SADFACE topics" like discrimination. Easily readable tables and humorous cartoons further liven up the presentation. " - Kirkus

Pros:- very informative- quick read (i finished it in a couple days)- quite funny and witty- lots of resources cited in the back of the bookCons:- mostly talks about gay men. briefly talks about other people in the LGBT community.- limited infomation for lesbians, transexuals, asexuals, etc.- doesn't give a lot of help if you're still questioning. I mean things that'll help you decide on whether or not you might be gay, pansexual, bisexual, asexual, etc. Like I said, it mostly speaks on behalf of gay, lesbian, and bisexual people.

I read this book with my 14-year-old. It was a solid introduction to everything that's not being adequately taught in school.

I was really excited when I read the summary of the book. Recently some people, like Ashley Mardell have been building some great LGBT resources. I thought this might be like that, but maybe a bit simplified. It wasn't what I expected. When he talks about sexuality/gender, there's a lot that he does right, but so much that he gets wrong. He mentions trans individuals, but the book is still littered in casual cissexism (gendered sex ed, "gay women only like vaginas", etc) and there is virtually no discussion of nonbinary individuals outside of "the binary is troublesome" and mentions of gender expression that could be connected to nb people. He mentions asexuality in the early couple of chapters but appears to ignore it through the last half of the book. No mention of sex adverse vs sex neutral and so on. Also, there is no discussion of romantic orientation. There are quite a lot of assumptions that everyone wants a mate.More on specific pros and consFirst, pros: most of the language is accessible for people who are unfamiliar with the LGBT community. I loved the bits from the people that he interviewed. They tackled HIV fairly well. They mention the idea of polyamory relitively positively (though it isn't named and isn't talked about in the best way. Some of the details, I took issue with). The chapter on LGBT sex ed was pretty okay (if you overlook the gendering of genitals and lack of ace talk [which you shouldn't be overooking])Cons: while the language may be accessible for young people, a lot of the sass and cheesy popular culture/slang make it less accessible for those who don't get sarcasm easily via text (such as autistic people) and older people - parents and teachers who may not even take LGBT identities seriously. He tackles stereotypes, but uses them relentlessly still (see, my first comment about sass and pop culture). While aces and aros are excluded, he puts in things that do not make sense to mention (scat and poppers, as well as nearly a whole chapter on Grindr and casual sex). There is a lot more that I could go into, but I'll save the energy. It is a great idea for a book and I love the personal anecdotes, but the way he handles (or doesn't) handle a lot of the issues is problematic.

I love the tone and accessibility, but the info is slightly off and sometimes a little dated. I read LGBT content with a pencil and correct things/update them and I've written something in on almost every page. It's pretty okay for teaching the basics, but far from perfect

If you are lgbt or anywhere in between... this book is for you. I would recommend this to anyone. Don't just pass it up because your straight. This a good read. READ IT!!! DO IT FOR THE GAYBIES

Helped teen who is trying to figure out "things." Helped parents understand current terminology. Not for the faint of heart - but if you are going to explore your sexuality, its better to do so than skirt around the issue. Teen really appreciated being given the book as a show of acceptance.

Although I'm unsure of the intended audience of this book, I think it spreads a positive message about acceptance and providing insight and education to those who don't get it in a traditional setting.

This book is funny as Hell, and packed full of good information. It says it's the gay handbook, and it's right! I love the sarcastic writing style and the great points and opinions in the book.
