Only a few books out of the thousands I’ve read impacted me more than MONDAY’S NOT COMING. The irony is that I almost didn’t buy it because it seemed to be directed toward younger readers. Do not make my faulty assumption, which was based on the age of the protagonists.Claudia, a fourteen-year-old African American girl, begins the book by saying, “This is the story of how my best friend disappeared.” Monday Charles has been like a sister to Claudia, and when she doesn’t arrive at school the first day, Claudia knows something is wrong. Days pass with no sign of Monday, and Claudia is becoming frantic.Claudia and Monday live in subsidized housing in Washington, DC. Both are poor, but Monday is poorer. Claudia comes from a stable, loving family; Monday’s family has problems. She is like a surrogate daughter to Claudia’s parents. Claudia and Monday are inseparable, although Claudia spent the summer with her grandmother in Atlanta.When Claudia questions Monday’s family, she can’t get a straight answer. Monday’s neighborhood is known to be dangerous, and she can’t get help there either. She expresses her concern to her teachers and guidance counselor, but almost everyone assures her that Monday is fine. One special teacher reports Monday’s absence to social services and is given the runaround. Monday’s mother tells all questioners that her daughter is with her father; Monday’s sister says, “Her aunt.” And those stories change.The tension builds as time passes with no sign of Monday. Claudia and her family report Monday’s disappearance to the police, and again are told not to worry “because teenage girls often run away.” With the exception of Claudia’s family, nobody understands the bond between the two girls. Monday would never have run away without telling Claudia.This book addresses racism, prejudice, gentrification, social services and the criminal justice system when applied to the disadvantaged living in Section 8 housing. Just imagine if Monday were named Sloan, lived on Park Avenue and attended prep school in Manhattan. Would everyone in authority do nothing if “Sloan” insisted that her lifelong best friend had disappeared? I see “Breaking News” banners flashing, and an Amber Alert issued.Tiffany Jackson did everything right when she wrote MONDAY’S NOT COMING. The Quentin Tarantino-esque timeline is brilliant, especially so when I reached the end. I was caught completely offguard as I reached the last page, but what a logical conclusion the book reached. And who couldn’t fall in love with Claudia and Monday? Anyone with a best friend understands that bond, and I would be lucky to have a persistent friend like Claudia. She never gives up. It is obvious to me that Tiffany Jackson poured her heart into this book; she certainly grabbed mine.

If a middle school student disappears, shouldn’t people care? If that child is a cute white girl from a middle or wealthy class family, her face is plastered over the news. Her sobbing family look sympathetic during press conferences. The police and maybe the FBI are involved. Friends, neighbors and strangers join search parties. This is, but should not be privilege. When that child is a black girl from the projects, the police (sometimes) assume she’s a runaway. If social services are involved with the family, she may slip through the cracks. She’s rarely headline news.4.5 STARSClaudia’s best friend Monday doesn’t show up for the first day of eighth grade and no one seems concerned. No one but Claudia. Monday’s mother says the young teen is with her father, Monday’s sister says she’s with an aunt. The school says she’s not registered. Claudia’s mother says Monday will turn up. As days turn into weeks into months Claudia is more determined to find her best friend.I wanted to fall in love with Tiffany Jackson’s sophomore effort as much as her debut ALLEGEDLY, but the layout was too confusing to follow. Chapters were labeled Before and After, and also Before Before and 2 Years Before Before so I was often confused about what time period I was reading. If Before has been before Monday disappeared it might have been a bit easier. Upon completing the book, I understood why Jackson chose ambiguity, but it took away from my enjoyment.I just loved Claudia and her complexity. Monday was her only friend, her other half, the one who gave her confidence. Suddenly alone, Claudia’s dyslexia becomes more apparent. She fears the Stupid Class. Dance is her salvation, but she feels like she doesn’t belong with the best group.MONDAY’S NOT COMING made me mad and sad and frustrated as a system too overworked and under serviced to take notice. Pointing fingers is easy. Most professionals, teachers, counselors, social workers do their best in difficult circumstances. Unfortunately, their best can fail kids like Monday.Anything more I want to say about MONDAY’S NOT COMING falls into the *spoiler* category. Jackson is a writer worth exploring. Her books have made me think and feel in areas novels don’t often touch.

This book was absolutely gut-wrenching. I honestly don't even know what to say. I read it in a single sitting, and I don't think I'm going to forget it any time soon. This book should be required reading--it touches on so much, from teen sexuality to racism to gentrification to child abuse to friendship. I honestly might have to come back and write a better review later, because this book...ahh. I can't do it justice.

Powerful, heart wrenching, tear jerking novel about teens in the DC suburbs. My heart is just breaking for Monday, Tuesday, August, April, and Claudia, and all children who are missing. I am in a funk now, missing Monday, Claudia, Michael, and all the strong and richly developed characters in this novel. I’m anxiously waiting for your next one, Ms. Jackson.

The wonky timeline and the not-so-great writing made this book hard for me to love...What exactly does One Year Before The Before or Two Years Before The Before even mean? Wouldn't it have been easier using years? It would have offered so much more clarity to the reader, that's a certainty. I honestly never quite knew where I was in the time line of the story. And without giving anything away, the "twist" at the end of the story made it even worse.I appreciate what the author was trying to do, but I don't believe she achieved her goals with this story. It's just so awkwardly written.2.5 stars

I read this compilation some years ago when I was battling cancer. I had become a nonbeliever long before, but this set of writings and essays helped me clarify my thinking on the matter. Even better, it gave me confidence to admit how I had felt about religion for years to others and gave me ammunition to debate believers more easily. I am glad that Hitch took on the task or choosing and editing this compendium. Obviously, some of the essays are better than others, but the whole is better than the sum of the parts for me.

The book is a wonderful compilation of the best atheist and non-theist literature spanning a period of over two millennia. In all this, I found the essay by Penn Jillette, beginning on p. 349, to be the most apposite as I have lived the experience he describes.To wit, p. 350. “…my imaginary friend means more to me than anything you can ever say or do.”I once had a spouse say to me that God came first, not me; that time spent with God was a higher priority in all things in place of time spent with me. I found that there was no appeal to reason or emotion that I could make, nothing that I could say or do, to overcome being put in a permanent second-rate metaphysical position to a fictional being by no less than a spouse to whom I had devoted the best years of my life. This is no less than an overturning of normal human empathy, compassion and relationship ethic for devotion to a mistaken and misguided belief in a fictional entity. If one spouse is second to God in the mind of the other spouse, the human relationship is greatly diminished. The second-rate spouse will never be able to compete with God in the mind of infected spouse. The second place is so distant as to render the lesser spouse out of sight and out of mind.This fictional entity has real power in the world of causality. It is an entity, a monster from the primitive mind, so strong as to be impervious to human reason and emotion, a malevolent, fictional yet powerful entity after all. This nicely, not for me, proves the title of Christoph Hitchens’ earlier book, ‘god is not Great, How Religion Poisons Everything’ My experience shows the height of religious arrogance where religious indoctrination replaces human relationship ethics and empathy and ruins a life. What better evidence of this can be found than in the very fact that it divides spouses?

Well written, as is everything of Christopher Hitchens, although some points may be over emphasised. This may be because I accepted the argument of a point before it was made. The book is not just for the unbeliever it is very much for the questioning believer, if such a person exists. The breadth of the references and the depth to which they are examined is amazing and very satisfying. Of course it is possible to be left in doubt on some matters but it is likely that other work by Christopher Hitchens can resolve these problems. Books by Dawkins and Harris will be excellent companions to this and the author's other publications.

What an absolute treasure trove of essential writings for those steeped in nonbelief! From Lucretius to Ibn Warraq with historical luminaries like Spinoza, Russell, Darwin, Freud, and even Lovecraft sandwiched between, this tome is definitive in it's selections, all-encompassing in it's scope, and just downright entertaining as well. The fact that Hitchens not only does the general book introduction but also the personal intros to every piece makes it all the more relevant and worthwhile. Do your questioning mind a huge favor and add it to your personal library!

I only discovered Christopher Hitchens about 1yr ago, but since that time I have been reading his works with enthusiasm. This book is not his writings of course, but a collection of writings that he finds important for non-believers. Thus, how could I turn down the advice of such a journalist.I gave the book 4 stars based purely on the fact that individuals interested in discussing such topics as religion, belief/non-belief, should, as Hitchens suggests, be somewhat versed in the more historical writings. However, from the standpoint of reading, I found this book very challenging. I have 2 advanced degress in biology/medicine, and I'm not ashamed to say that I had to read many of the passages 2 or 3x to really get an understanding of what the author was trying to say. I mention the degrees not as evidence of intelligence, only to establish that I enjoy academic pursuits.....and this book would qualify as just that! If the topic of belief/non-belief is a passion/pursuit of yours, then this book would be valuable; however, if you are looking for some light reading in the evening, this may not be the best choice.

So many different sources of information are combined in this book. I love that it begins with the types of guitars and continues with a solid and intuitive foundation. The video snippets are incredible. They allow you to begin seeing success immediately – you get to begin making music! Other books progress slowly and in a rigid fashion. As a result, you are not playing anything satisfying until near the book’s end – sometimes not even then.The music theory included is refreshing.My favorite thing about this book are the “Secrets to Guitar Success.” There are suggestions like: trying new gear and listening to music outside your comfort zone. This kind of advice is golden. So often as artists we get stuck and have no way to find inspiration or to continue to expand ourselves as musicians.Finally, at the end there is a great list for suggested listening that includes so many wonderful artists. I was so happy to see Michael Hedges’ name included!This book has rekindled my desire to play an instrument that I had long-since given up on because the instruction I had received from various books over the years left me stranded and uninspired. Now I know there is an alternative to the usual dry text that is absent any humanness or experienced advice.

This is a fantastic instructional book. I love how easy it is to follow and how the lessons progress in a manner that includes the previous lesson so you can continue to use what you previously learned. The diagrams are extremely helpful in understanding what the lesson should look like with the actual instrument. There is a little bit of something for everyone here. Wether you are just beginning or you are trying to continue developing your skills this book is for you. Having the interactive option of the video puts this instruction over the top! It is often hard to imagine what it should look like when you put the lessons from a book to use. Having the option to see it first hand is a tremendous bonus that puts this book above any other online or self teaching type of course. I would highly recommend this book to musicians of any age!!

This is utterly confusing for beginners. In Lesson 10, they teach you three major chords and you think you're getting somewhere. Then you go to the video and all it is is someone playing guitar almost wholly overwhelmed by a heavy drumbeat that makes the guitar impossible to listen to -- no instruction or explanation at all. In future lessons, they teach you THE EXACT SAME CHORDS but the strings and how you play them are completely different. Again, no explanation and all you can think is, Damn, I thought I already learned F Major! I can go on and on. They make one comment after another and you read it over and over again and it's utterly meaningless -- no explanation of what the words mean at all. I guess all the other reviews here were written by Eric Clapton: he understood it!Horrible, horrible lesson book. Two stars because some of the songs look like they'd be fun to play... if you ever learn how to. :-(

I have been using my book for awhile. It makes learing the guitar easy. And if you are interested in learning the fret board and you love to pick or want to learn to pick as I do, then this is the beginner guide. It will having you picking songs out on the frets (with much practice) in no time. I love this book

This is one of the better guitar for beginners books I have seen. The author starts with the basics but in an easy to read style while keeping the reader engaged with use of practice along the way. Other books I have read just give you 5 basic songs with a pattern to strum to with out offering any technique or explanation. This book gives you the tools to lay the groundwork to start your skills.

This book has really helped me improve my playing. I think anyone would benefit from checking it out. The lessons are super clear and educational. Thanks to Jamie for sending me to this book. I have already seen improvement in a couple days.

From an early age "Aleck" (Bell's family nickname) evinced an interest in sound and hearing, probably due to his father's profession of speech therapy and his mother's hearing loss.Aleck's childhood experiences, observations, and experiments led to his careers, first as a teacher to the deaf and then as an inventor of the telephone. Aleck was determined to speed up communication and improve on the telegraph, first developed in the 1830s. The book's accessible text focuses on his life up to and including the invention of the telephone in 1876, when he was 29. His later inventions are described in the backmatter, along with a chronologyand an author's note. The multimedia illustrations use photographic collage elements, friendly, slightly cartoony human figures, and sound effects and dialogue balloons on some pages. Photographic insets and diagrams further explain Bell's work. This is an entertaining, informative, beautifully illustrated picture book. And what a great title! It's the story of a child following his curiosity, closely observing, exploring ideas, and creating. Author-illustrator, Mary Ann Fraser, reveals how Alexander Graham Bell grew up to invent the telephone in a page-turning, you-are-there way. This is a terrific gift to give to the bright, curious young people in your life. And, it certainly belongs on school shelves everywhere.

Fun, educational book! We loved the illustrations over real photos. Beautiful book for kids!

I will admit that I don't have kids, so I really don't know how kids will like this book, but I thought it was a lovely children's book and I would certainly recommend it. The illustrations are wonderful. The information in the book is interesting but kids will never know they are learning because it is fun and entertaining. I appreciated that there are parts that go more in depth for those who want to understand how things work. I would recommend this book and I think it would make a great gift for any child in the picture book years.

Luke Timothy Johnson begins his study of the practical issue of how decisions are made in the church by admitting to a bias: that there ought to be a connection between what the church claims to be, and how it does things. Because the church claims to be a community of faith, it does not reach decisions simply on the basis of good management policy, or the analysis of market trends, or efficiency, or even ideological consistency, but in response to God's activity in the world that presses upon us and urges us to decision. Faced with how to respond to God's leading, the church decides what to do on the basis of two realities: Scripture and discernment. Because it calls the church into being Scripture is the fundamental authority in the church's life. Yet it is not enough for a congregation simply to turn to the Bible when a decision must be reached, for Scripture does not directly address all issues which face the church today, and those it does often reflect greatly differing historical and social contexts than our own. Thus, added to the authority of Scripture in the church's decision making is a process of discernment, in which the members of the community, under the guidance of the Holy Spirit, recall how God has worked in their lives as individuals and as a community and discern together God's direction for the future. Johnson argues that this very pattern of decision making can be found in Scripture itself, notably in one of the central events of the book of Acts. Beginning with the conversion of Cornelius and culminating in the Apostolic Council of Acts 15, we see how a string of smaller narratives combine to tell the story of God's movement within their midst, and how thisnarrative became the basis for the reinterpretation of Scripture and the inclusion of Gentiles into the fellowship of the church. Looking at a number of thorny issues facing the contemporary church, Johnson demonstrates how the interaction of Scripture and discernment can and must become the basis for how we respond to the decisions with which the church wrestles today.

All of church leadership should read this book...too often we get caught up in the finance of the church and forget about the purpose & health of The Church. All of church members should read this book - if we can not learn how to discern what God has planned for us as individuals and as a family...how can we figure it out as a congregation....READ THIS BOOK!!! LTJ is an amazing writer, amazing person, and has many wonderful things to teach us.

This is a book by Timothy Luke Johnson, which is a pretty well known name in the churches of Christ, and mostly for Christianity in general. This book will end in a direction that few, if any members of the churches of Christ will go, but the process of the journey is worth the reading. The book goes into the process of discernment of the early church. The majority of the work, and the material that is the most insightful is from the exegetical research into Acts 10-15. This is the famous discussion of the Cornelius situation. For us today, this is safe territory, but for first century Jews, this was radical teachings and behaviors. He charts the process of the group seeking to discern the will of God in this situation. You have those appealing to the Old Testament doctrine, the example of Christ, both ways (gentile mission or coming to the Jews), and the process of discerning the acts of the Holy Spirit. Some of his insights into the process of group discern are great. He states "Groups have, therefore, only limited tolerance for diversity. When that tolerance is overstepped , the group will either dissolve or make decisions." p. 14. And he observes "Many group decisions, as a result, tend to be made implicitly, following the path of least resistance. This is the path of "what we have always done."p. 16. Throughout the book he attempts to create a model for narrative discernment within the body of Christ. He highlights some of the misuses of the Bible. "Sometimes the talismanic use of the Bible is obvious, as when we swear on the book or incense it. Sometimes it is more subtle. Is it "theology" to extract a handful of verses, arrange them in a set of propositions, and apply them to every circumstance without ever actually reading them?" p. 46). But before you believe he goes with a reader response method, he believes strongly in discerning truth. "reader. The authority of the community is absent, the authority of the creed is not determinative, and now even the authority of the text (as some sort of historically verifiable entity) is abandoned. What remains is the principle of free interpretation, rooted in the subjectivity of the individual reader. What remains, in other words, is chaos." p. 50. His work on the Acts chapter is just great. It is interesting the process that the church went through. There was a radical departure from circumcision, but there is the respect to tradition of the blood laws. He continues the book through a study of Paul's process of discernment. And provides some advice for the community of God today. He moves in a radical direction, at the end when he uses this model to cast out all teachings on homosexuality, and the role of women in the worship. But the journey is deep, but the conclusion is shocking.

Johnson begins conveniently by defining terms and concepts to be used throughout the book.Johnson defines church as by various terms throughout, including an intentional community, a living organism (juxtaposed to an organisation), but perhaps the most fundamental is this: 'The church in the strict sense is found where there is a specific group of people who assemble together to call on the name of the Lord in prayer and fellowship.'Key to the definition and existence of the church is faith. Faith is defined as the response in trust and obedience, a deeply responsive hearing of another's word or call. Faith in God, theological faith, the faith of the church, is therefore the hearing of the call of God. And the distinctiveness of the community called 'Church'Johnson's definition of faith is different from many theologians in that is requires a recognition that God acts now, and continues to act. Johnson's faith is 'not attachment to a body of doctrines but a process of responding in obedience and trust to God's Word,' which continues to speak to us through the interpretive prism of community and experience.Johnson then proceeds to discuss the normative use of scripture, which he returns to in each chapter. Two quotes are essential from the text here: 'It is an expression of the church's faith to regard these writings as prophetic for every age, and therefore as speaking God's Word.' Also, 'The theologian serves the church by allowing the text from the past and the text of the present to enter mutual interpretation.'Johnson proceeds to discuss techniques to show how diversity of voices can be recognised and accepted without any single voice being dominant or neglected. These include typology, midrashic, and allegorical techniques in reading, which each have their own pitfalls. Johnson contends that the literary diversity of the New Testament provides a framework for a plurality of faithful responses, individual and communal, to the Word of God.In the second and third parts of the book, Johnson moves beyond theory to talk about issues regarding specific applications and how they inform the general principles of decision making in the church.In talking about difficulties, Johnson concentrates on Acts 15 as a model (often neglected, as he characterises it). He states that the narrative aspects of the prophetic witness is key to the process, 'because it gives the fullest picture in the New Testament of the process by which the church reaches decisions.'Moving on to decisions, Johnson gives us examples of decisions that were made by the early church, but says that they do not provide a good model for decision-making, as they primarily concentrate on the outcomes rather than the process.Discernment is described by Johnson as a vague but necessary and very real part of the decision-making process, akin to (and derived from the Greek words for) testing and judging, as well as understanding. Again, Johnson (interpreting Paul) is more concerned with 'the integrity of the ekklesia, God's convocation' than with individuals, who have a responsibility in discernment (in a later chapter he discusses the mutuality of responsibility of listener and speaker in this process), but not necessarily a decisive one. The goal for discernment is holiness and edification of the entire community.Johnson proceeds under the Practice section to concentrate primarily on three topics as illustrative of his model of decision-making and discernment: the status of women (leadership), homosexuality (fellowship), and possessions and economics (stewardship).In Johnson's final chapter, he discusses the need for a 'conversational model' of hermeneutics that involves leadership and fellowship in a broader and more listening mode than has existed, and that the responsibility for theological thinking and speaking needs to be carried to all members of the church.The primary question I would ask of the book as a whole is, How do application of the principles of discernment and decision-making work for a church organisation that goes beyond the parish/local congregation level? Can the principles of listening and decision-making be applied to a macro-organisation such as regional/national/international churches in a constructive and thoughtful way in the same way they are applied at local levels? And what becomes of local discernment when it is out of line with the discernment and decision-making of the larger organisation?Johnson gives many examples, again arising from the diversity of voices found in the scriptures, of different circumstances and applications, and looks for general principles that guide all decisions, which include a listening to narrative experience, leadership by the Holy Spirit, and discernment in community. Johnson admits that this is often a vague process, and that care has to be taken in making sure that 'the proper spirit' is being heard -- he even gives examples of how Paul seems to violate his own principles (leaving aside the possibility of later revisions/redactions of the text and such problems), which remind us of the passage read at the beginning of the course about listening to other gospels, even if taught by angels, etc. Johnson categorises the status of women as an issue of leadership and the issue of homosexuality as one of fellowship. I would argue that both could be reclassified under the other's heading. I would have liked for Johnson to expand upon the Devices section, and perhaps include more on how to reach those outside the church (if indeed the church is supposed to be evangelical -- calling out to the world to bring those outside in).I am biased in that Johnson was a professor of mine during my undergraduate days at Indiana University, and I have read almost everything he's ever written. He is very consistent; many points will be made across chapters and books using the exact same language and construction. The readings for this evening will provide a good framework for further discussion of how communities form their identities, canons and codes of action.

Dr. Johnson has updated this book, making it a fantastic resource for anyone interested in the ways the church should use scripture to discern the will of God. Johnson hits important issues, including the place of homosexual Christians in the church, but rather than using the book as a soapbox to take stands on issues, he uses the issues to demonstrate the way scripture is used and understood. The book is helpful to religion/seminary students and clergy, but is accessible to lay persons who care about making scripture the basis for their decisions and those of their church.

Our God is alive and well...and each Christian is called to heal the sick, pray for the release of oppression, and witness to the Power of our God to make them whole. Mark 16:15-18. This book should be used with the "Handbook for Healing." It give a lot of guidelines on how to minister to the sick. My faith grows as I read so many creative techniques on healing. Understanding that we are the body of Christ and it is Jesus who lives in us and the power of God's Holy Spirit that performs miracles makes me praise God for partnership and giving us the authority and power in Jesus name to cast out demons, heal the sick and raise the dead. Living in signs, wonders, and miracles is amazing.

My daughter is a VERY reluctant reader. Her teacher wants her reading beginning chapter books every week and I couldn't even get her to read a short storybook without a fight... Until I found these books!! Once she started reading this series I actually had to tell her to put them down to do other things. There is a picture on every page but still a lot of words so I feel it is a great transition for her. She loves that Prince Lucas and his friend Clara meet dragons, mermaids, fairies, witches, wizards, trolls and go on many different adventures together. She is on book 8 out of 12 right now and she is loving every moment of reading them. I feel the author did a great job of gearing these books to boys and girls. I have to recommend these books to anyone who knows a reluctant reader and any young reader who likes fantasy.

Love this series. My 4th grade son is behind in reading due to dyslexia and this is one of those series he can read, and understand, and take/pass those reading points quizzes on, and he's interested in them. Fantastic. I'm glad we found them!
